[11:28] <g7gpr> Hi, I'm trying to set up a station to receive telemetry, but I'm confused about all the different types. LoRaWAN, RTTY, TTN, WSPR, etc. Is there a document somehwere that can help me out?
[11:29] <SpacenearUS> New position from 03N4XWC-1 after 039 hours silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=N4XWC-1
[11:31] <PE2BZ> g7gpr, for the moment receiving only, or plans to fly yourself in the near future ?
[11:32] <g7gpr> Receiving only.
[11:33] <g7gpr> I'm doing a pretty good job receiving Radiosondes, up in Darwin Australia at the moment.
[11:33] <PE2BZ> TTn is short for ¨The Things Network¨ which supports an RX network for LoRa WAN transmitters. Only thing you can do for that is buy / build a LoRaWan 8 channel gateway and have that connected to an antenna. However you would almost never know that you received an High Altitude Balloon.
[11:33] <PE2BZ> So that leaves RTTY , WSPR and LoRa on ISM frequencies
[11:34] <g7gpr> OK. I see the modules from Zachtek for WSPR.
[11:34] <PE2BZ> wspr is common for low weight floaters, where 20 m wspr (software like wsjt-x) is the most used because of coverage in relation to power and antenna wire size.
[11:34] <g7gpr> Are they all on 20m?
[11:35] <PE2BZ> 98 percent of the flights at this moment yes.
[11:35] <PE2BZ> Every now and then I notice a telemetry string on 40 m but I am not sure that is an actual balloon.
[11:35] <PE2BZ> You know the wspr database ?
[11:36] <g7gpr> I've touched it, not an expert.
[11:36] <PE2BZ> http://wsprnet.org/drupal/wsprnet/spotquery
[11:37] <PE2BZ> Try that. Band: 20m, call ve3k* last 12 hours. You see all spots reported from the 10 mW ve3kcl-12 13 17 18 19 balloons.
[11:38] <PE2BZ> I received wspr Australia this morning on my 2 m horizontal yagi on the 20 m band :-)
[11:38] <PE2BZ> 0710 -18 0.2 14.097083 0 VK3QN QF22 37 16576
[11:39] <g7gpr> What is Flextrak?
[11:39] <PE2BZ> And there are RTTY and 4FSK (Horus Binary )
[11:39] <PE2BZ> I think that´s a ready built tracker to attach to a High Altitude Balloon ?
[11:39] <PE2BZ> 4fsk is commonly used by Darkside
[11:40] <PE2BZ> That requires usually a 70 cm RX (or SDR) and the Horus Gui software
[11:40] <ON3JT_Joost> Flextrak : https://store.uputronics.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=118
[11:40] <g7gpr> How does one receive Flextrak?
[11:41] <Darkside> g7gpr: receiving where - australia or UK?
[11:41] <PE2BZ> https://www.daveakerman.com/?page_id=2670
[11:41] <PE2BZ> That one ?
[11:41] buttim (~buttim@host-80-182-129-245.retail.telecomitalia.it) left irc: Ping timeout: 240 seconds
[11:41] <g7gpr> Receiving in Australa -
[11:41] <g7gpr> I'll sort out my call eventually...
[11:41] <Darkside> A) there's not that many flights
[11:42] <Darkside> like, really bugger all amateur HAB launches in austrli
[11:42] <g7gpr> True, but some of the ones that go round and round drift over WA, and get no coverage.
[11:42] <Darkside> those usually use HF
[11:43] <g7gpr> WSPR?
[11:43] <Darkside> usually, yes
[11:43] <g7gpr> Right, so the next project is 20m WSPR
[11:43] <Darkside> which is best received from a low-noise RX site
[11:43] <Darkside> and not necessarily in the area the balloon is in
[11:43] buttim__ (~buttim_@host-80-182-129-245.pool80182.interbusiness.it) joined #highaltitude.
[11:43] buttim_ (~buttim_@host-80-182-129-245.pool80182.interbusiness.it) left irc: Read error: Connection reset by peer
[11:44] <Darkside> usually those balloons are travelling at a fairly low altitude, like 8-12km, so their radio horizon for line-of-sight propagation isnt that large
[11:44] <Darkside> so its really stations that are much further away that receive them
[11:44] <g7gpr> OK. So maybe I should think about TTN.
[11:45] <Darkside> sure... but same issue
[11:45] <Darkside> with TTN its *only* line of sight
[11:45] <g7gpr> So a station in WA could be more useful.
[11:45] <Darkside> i suspect there woudl be TTN gateways in your area already - and if you set one up, it will probably be serving other users of TTN rather than balloons
[11:45] <g7gpr> Good point.
[11:46] <Darkside> https://www.thethingsnetwork.org/map
[11:46] <Darkside> if you want to receive balloons, HF is probably the best shot, unless it turns out a local group does a launch
[11:47] <SM0ULC-David> 433 or 868 mhz?
[11:47] <Darkside> ?
[11:47] <SM0ULC-David> for ttn
[11:47] <Darkside> here in australia TTN is on 915-928 MHz
[11:47] <Darkside> you'd hope the people launching TTN floater payloads would have geofencing to get the transitter onto the right band
[11:48] <SM0ULC-David> yes
[11:48] <Darkside> 868 MHz is not an ISM band in australia - that's a mobile phone band here
[11:48] <Darkside> and AFAIK there's no TTN networks on 434MHz here
[11:48] buttim__ (~buttim_@host-80-182-129-245.pool80182.interbusiness.it) left irc: Ping timeout: 268 seconds
[11:49] <SM0ULC-David> i'm running ttn on 433 & 868 since there's plentyu of antennas for 433 and not so much for 868
[11:49] <Darkside> g7gpr: in australia, apart from HF floating balloons, the launch you are most likely to receive is the one you do yourself...
[11:49] <Darkside> there are just not that many amateur HAB launches here.
[11:49] <g7gpr> True. So I'm going to set up a 20m WSPR receiver. A Zachtek box and a pi?
[11:50] <Darkside> no idea what that box is
[11:50] <Darkside> but you shoudl really get some idea of your noise floor first...
[11:50] <g7gpr> https://www.zachtek.com/product-page/wspr-receiver
[11:50] <SM0ULC-David> https://www.zachtek.com/wspr-tx ?
[11:50] <g7gpr> I get to travel to some very quiet places.
[11:51] <Darkside> i guess you coul duse something like that?
[11:51] <ON3JT_Joost> You can also use a normal HF transceiver on 20 (if you have one).
[11:51] <Darkside> but somethign like a kiwisdr would probably be more useful
[11:51] <Darkside> and then you get to actually have a look at the rest of the HF band at the same time
[11:52] <PE2BZ> +1 for the KiWi, which allows background wspr decoding and uploading on 4 bands and 3 allround receivers.
[11:53] <g7gpr> That's awesome. Time to make a purchase.
[11:53] <g7gpr> So the Kiwisdr has a wspr demod built in?
[11:53] <Darkside> you can turn one on i think
[11:53] <Darkside> things to note: kiwisdr doesnt work over wifi, ethernet only
[11:54] <g7gpr> Happy with that.
[11:54] <g7gpr> Then how does it get into habhub?
[11:54] <Darkside> it doesnt like being near strong broadcast stations, you may need to add a high-pass filter (Minikits sells something suitable)
[11:54] <SpacenearUS> New vehicle on the map: 03Mdroberts1243_chase - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=Mdroberts1243_chase
[11:54] <Darkside> uhh yeah thats convoluted
[11:54] <g7gpr> Lol.
[11:54] <Darkside> but if you upload WSPR spots to WSPRnet it gets there eventually
[11:54] <g7gpr> Ah OK.
[11:55] <g7gpr> I don't need the details, just the entry point.
[11:55] <Darkside> usually the people that launch the balloon have wsprnet scrapers which get the telemetry and upload positions into either APRS or habhub directly
[11:55] ghoti_ (~paul@45.78.120.196) joined #highaltitude.

[11:56] <g7gpr> AREG is very cool.
[11:56] <Darkside> g7gpr: yes, i know you have :P
[11:56] <Darkside> <--- VK5QI
[11:56] <g7gpr> - I meant the receivers, not the club!
[11:57] <PE2BZ> lol
[11:57] <Darkside> oh :P
[11:57] ghoti (~paul@45.78.109.171) left irc: Ping timeout: 252 seconds
[11:57] <Darkside> well you visited the club too :P
[11:58] <g7gpr> For a moment I wondered if you were grepping the logs on the receivers.
[11:58] <Darkside> i dont keep access logs on the kiwisdrs
[11:58] <Darkside> just channel occupancy stats
[11:59] <g7gpr> I hooked up my PCR1000 to an internet server thing years ago, it never took off.
[11:59] <Darkside> but yeah, i should probably set up WSPR receivers hanging off the SpyServers at some point. I'm already running 30m and 40m HF APRS receivers on them
[11:59] <g7gpr> It's great being in a hotel room and jumping onto a decent receiver in a quiet location.
[12:00] <Darkside> anyway, the KiwiSDR is probably a good option for general purpose HF receive, with optional demodulators
[12:00] <Darkside> not sure what supply of them is like at the moment
[12:00] <g7gpr> Anyway, thanks for all the info; I'll see what I can build.
[12:00] <SM0ULC-David> there's at least one clone
[12:01] <g7gpr> Looks like they are on back order at seeedstudio.
[12:01] <Darkside> yeah, the raspi shield thing. not sure how the software support is for it, given its an unofficial fork of the original one
[12:01] <Darkside> g7gpr: yeah not surprised
[12:02] <g7gpr> Best get my order in.
[12:06] <g7gpr> I'd rather use a linux based machine than a windows machine - being able to stick openvpn onto something makes support so easy.
[12:10] <Darkside> yeah i'm really hesitant about doing anything specifically on the kiwisdr machine itself... it's running debian, but its got a lot of auto update stuff that makes modifying the OS a bit risky
[12:12] <g7gpr> It would never occur to me to tweak that.
[12:13] <g7gpr> Kiwi sdr -> pi -> openvpn -> my shack vpn server
