[03:25] <KJ4TDM> HELLO WORLD
[03:27] <Darkside> \o
[03:31] <N4XWC> World sez hello back!
[03:32] <N4XWC> 402.5 and 403.5 the only ones up now?
[03:33] <Darkside> oh N4XWC !
[03:33] <Darkside> hello
[03:33] <N4XWC> Hey Darkside
[03:33] <Darkside> you're the one uploading sonde positions using your own callsign
[03:33] <N4XWC> Uh oh...ya caught me!
[03:33] <Darkside> please avoid doing that :-)
[03:33] <Darkside> we have conventions for sonde IDs on APRS-IS now
[03:34] <Darkside> and it really confuses things
[03:34] <N4XWC> I know those automatic RP trackers do some auto-naming...Where can I find the conventions?
[03:35] <Darkside> well, its kind of in the code unfortunately
[03:35] <Darkside> and yeah, auto_rx suports LMS6 now
[03:35] <Darkside> and imet
[03:35] <Darkside> https://github.com/projecthorus/radiosonde_auto_rx/blob/master/auto_rx/autorx/aprs.py#L39
[03:35] <N4XWC> K.  I played a little with auto_rx a while back.  But I didn't have any dongle that would receive ours on 1676Mhz
[03:36] <Darkside> producing the callsigns does unfortunately rely on you having the data in an appropriate format
[03:36] <Darkside> but yeah, theres a lot of auto_Rx users in the US now, receiving the 1680 MHz sondes
[03:36] <SpacenearUS> New position from 03KJ4TDM-11 after 036 days silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=KJ4TDM-11
[03:36] <N4XWC> So I use SDRUno with SondeMonitor
[03:36] <N4XWC> What SDR do they use?
[03:37] <Darkside> RTLSDRs
[03:37] <Darkside> usually with one of the nooelec preamps
[03:37] <N4XWC> K....I have several different ones, none were really good on 1676, even with LNA
[03:38] <Darkside> you certainy cant use use the auto-scan feature in auto_rx with the 1680 MHz LMS6 sondes, it dosnt work at all
[03:39] <Darkside> you need to define a set of fixed frequencies for it to attempt to detect the sondes on
[03:39] SebastianFlyte (~sebf@pool-173-79-119-80.washdc.fios.verizon.net) left irc: Ping timeout: 240 seconds
[03:40] <KJ4TDM> I'm still here
[03:41] <N4XWC> Yeah, that's what I heard.  Ours are always on 1676 and pretty stable freq. wise.  I have to be spot on with my antenna aiming though. Helps a lot to hear and see the signal.
[03:41] <KJ4TDM> I went down a rabbit hole look at river lock info
[03:42] <Darkside> btu yeah, theres a bunch of people all around the US receiving the 1680 MHz sonds no problems with auto_rx
[03:43] <N4XWC> On the naming conventions, any suggestions?  Something I can set and leave it that way.
[03:43] <Darkside> no, its per-sonde ID
[03:43] SebastianFlyte (~sebf@pool-173-79-119-80.washdc.fios.verizon.net) joined #highaltitude.
[03:44] <Darkside> for LMS6 sondes we convert the serial number to hex, then take the lowest 5 characters, and append that to 'LMS6' for an overall 9-character long object ID
[03:44] <Darkside> e.g. LMS612345
[03:46] <N4XWC> With my setup, the name is static unless I manually change it every time.  I leave my station set up to receive without me around....so it would need to be static.  But I don't mind using something other than my call.
[03:48] <Darkside> no, if you're not going to doing it automatically based on the sonde ID, then use your cal
[03:48] <Darkside> but id suggest trying auto_rx again...
[03:48] <Darkside> its intended for these kind of unattended situations
[03:49] <N4XWC> Any suggestions of a brand of SDR dongle to try? Nooelec?
[03:53] <Darkside> i think most are running the RTLSDR v3 dongles
[03:53] <Darkside> just asking someone up in new york state what they run
[03:54] <N4XWC> K...Those have the built-in Bias-T, right?

[03:57] <N4XWC> Hey Brian, we need to see how far we can get up the Mulberry now on the Jetskis!
[03:57] <KJ4TDM> we can
[03:58] <KJ4TDM> You think something has changed from last year?
[03:59] <N4XWC> Yeah, that water level!!!!
[03:59] <N4XWC> *The water level
[03:59] <Darkside> N4XWC: yeah
[04:00] <Darkside> they will power the nooelec preamps (which have suitable filtering)
[04:00] <Darkside> i think most stations are running a small dish, the nooelec filtered preamp, and a rtlsdr
[04:00] <Darkside> cant really do without the preamp
[04:00] <N4XWC> K...seems I tried one a year or so ago, and whatever LNA I was using, it didn't wanna power it.
[04:01] <SpacenearUS> New vehicle on the map: 03WB8ELK-1 - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=WB8ELK-1
[04:01] <N4XWC> Yep....I have to use a preamp.  The SAWBird works great with my setup...that may be the one that the RTLSDR wouldn't power
[04:02] <Darkside> lol bill is doing the same thing
[04:02] <Darkside> ffs
[04:02] <Darkside> this is why we use systems which result in the same callsign, so we dont have 3 balloons on the map for the same sonde
[04:03] <SpacenearUS> New position from 03LU1ESY-18 after 0316 hours silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=LU1ESY-18
[04:03] <KJ4TDM> I was wonder why we weren't all showing up
[04:03] <N4XWC> 403.5 just went away! I think they must be using cheap batteries!
[04:03] <KJ4TDM> I'm still on 402.5
[04:04] <Darkside> oh 400 mhz sondes?
[04:04] <Darkside> those are super easy to decode with auto_rx
[04:04] <SpacenearUS> New vehicle on the map: 03LUX2 - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=LUX2
[04:04] <Darkside> like, you barely need an antenna
[04:05] <Darkside> like, from what you guys are uploading i cant even tell what model it is, or what frequency its on
[04:05] <Darkside> with auto_rx all that information is made available
[04:06] <Darkside> and your track in particular N4XWC is an absolute mess on the map
[04:06] <N4XWC> Yeah, DS, we are tracking some special sonde launches now due to the bad weather coming in.  They are on 403.  No preamp needed!
[04:06] <Darkside> since you're switching sondes but using the same callsigns
[04:06] <Darkside> so use auto_Rx!
[04:06] <Darkside> it'll all be a lot clearer
[04:07] <N4XWC> That probably would make it nice if I could easily separate em.
[04:07] <N4XWC> There are a couple sondes up now, I guess maybe 5 or 6 so far tonight in the area.
[04:09] <Darkside> yeah many sondes up at one time can be a challenge to deal with. at the moment to track more than one sonde you need more than one SDR, which shouldnt really be the case
[04:09] <Darkside> but its the way that is is for now until either me or someon eelse does a bunch of DSP work
[04:10] <N4XWC> That's way outta my league! :)   Bunch of smart folks out there tho!
[04:10] <Darkside> but yeah, for 400 mhz you can just throw pretty much any RTLSDR at the job
[04:10] <Darkside> much better iwth a TCXO version though
[04:10] <Darkside> the basic crystal versions drift badly
[04:12] <KJ4TDM> I'm calling it a night. I'm going to leave my station on.
[04:13] KJ4TDM (1778071f@23-120-7-31.lightspeed.brhmal.sbcglobal.net) left irc: Quit: Connection closed
[04:13] <N4XWC> Here, they used to launch 403's once a week to monitor ozone.  Then they went to once a month....now they haven't launched any in over a year.  That's how  I got started with the sondes.  Then I decided to try 1676 stuff since that is what they use around here, for now.  It's been fun setting up the station to do it.
[04:13] <N4XWC> K...have a good night Brian.  Probably see ya one day next week!
[04:15] <Darkside> N4XWC: what model sondes are they?
[04:15] <Darkside> LMS6?
[04:15] <N4XWC> The 403's for the ozone stuff?
[04:15] <Darkside> yes
[04:15] <Darkside> like, what mode are you using in sondemonitor
[04:16] <N4XWC> iMet-1's... Wideband
[04:16] <Darkside> oh. the 60 kHz versions
[04:16] <Darkside> christ they still make those things
[04:17] <Darkside> thats the one sonde type that i never bothered to add support for in auto_rx, since they were meant to be phased out years ago
[04:17] <Darkside> damn
[04:17] <N4XWC> I really don't know if they are still made or if they are just refurbs.  They love it when we chase em and give em back!
[04:17] malcolmlewis (~malcolmle@opensuse/member/malcolmlewis) left irc: Quit: Leaving
[04:18] <N4XWC> They have a big box attached to em that does the Ozone monitoring.  Has some chemicals and a pump in it.  Then it feeds data to the iMet.
[04:19] malcolmlewis (~malcolmle@opensuse/member/malcolmlewis) joined #highaltitude.
[04:20] <N4XWC> I assume it's just a legacy application and the new iMet-4's don't have that interface.
[04:21] <SpacenearUS> New position from 03LU1ESY-15 after 032 days silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=LU1ESY-15
[04:22] <Darkside> the imet-4's definitely have that interface
[04:24] <N4XWC> K...cool.  I have several of those here.  Might take a look.  auto_rx can control a digital rotor, right
[04:24] <Darkside> via rotctld, yeah
[04:25] <N4XWC> I picked up a digital controller kit for my CDE rotor, haven't put it together yet.  That's what I bought it for.
[04:25] <Darkside> it should park the rotator at a home location (e.g. pointing at a launch site) if theres been no telemetry received in a while too
[04:26] <N4XWC> Hoping it might work
[04:26] <Darkside> as long as it implements soe kind of standard control protocol, rotctld should be able to talk to it
[04:28] <N4XWC> I think I saw that.  That would be perfect for my setup.  My antenna is a parabolic dish and it's quite narrow, like it has to be within about 10 degrees either way to get the signal.
