[10:34] <SA6BSS-Mike1> Chrischan: PC4L: so, reading up, that cell used by Chrichan had 1700mAh in it and weight 17 gram, comparing that to Energizer Ultra Lithium AAA
[10:35] <SA6BSS-Mike1> those are 15gram for two and you will have 1250mA so, the 123 will have an adavantage
[10:36] <PE2BZ> SA6BSS-Mike1, did you notice the datasheet says the capacity is reduced to 25 percent at -40 degrees
[10:36] <SA6BSS-Mike1> rr, no did not
[10:45] <Chrischan> Exactly, it's about the weight advantage due to the compact design. I am currently reading data sheets from the various manufacturers, but it is not that easy because there seem to be no uniform tests at low temperatures. Since the new software means that the batteries have to work mainly at the lowest temperatures, you need the capacity at -40 degrees, all other values are irrelevant.
[10:47] <SA6BSS-Mike1> indeed!
[10:48] <SA6BSS-Mike1> I did a couple of years ago two testflight with a pure rtty tracker, I put one lithum aaa on it (the board ran from one 1.5 battery with 1640 boost ic up to 1,8v
[10:49] <SpacenearUS> New vehicle on the map: 03DC5WP-11 - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=DC5WP-11
[10:49] <SA6BSS-Mike1> I put 3 solarcells across it and it ran for mostly 3 full days and whn the battery was completed it kept running on the solar cells
[10:50] <SA6BSS-Mike1> could possebly be done with this as well, using 6 cells across the battery
[10:56] <PE2BZ> Chrischan, I find them to drop voltage sooner (the CR123a´s) as the Energizer AAA which are 14 grams for 2 pieces and 1400 mAh.
[10:57] <PE2BZ> And never found a working stepup for 1 AA to RS41 .... That draws a lot of current at startup ...
[10:58] <SA6BSS-Mike1> no 1 battery would never work on the 41
[10:59] <SA6BSS-Mike1> just that put cells across the battery to let it run on solar whn its completed its batteries
[10:59] <SA6BSS-Mike1> that way you can have around clock trakeing first couple of days and then it will be on solar
[11:08] <Chrischan> Thanks for the hint, haven't looked at the AAA yet, maybe I'll do a test flight with it. At the end of the day a simple and inexpensive solution should be found to save a few liters of helium and to float near the 10km for a long time with a 36inch balloon

[11:18] <SA6BSS-Mike1> rr, foil would be the way to go with solar, that way if your lucky ir can swing arround Europe for a week

[22:02] <k4jcw> Greetings. I'm trying to use auto_rx for decoding radiosondes. I've got a RTL-SDR v3, 403Mhz pre-amp, Discone antenna. auto_rx consistently sees 5 to 9 peaks above the threshold, but after 36 hours, I have yet to decode any radiosondes. I'm in Atlanta, GA and the NWS has a major office about 50 miles south of me. I've checked the calibration on the
[22:02] <k4jcw> RTL-SDR against CellTracker, and I'm < 1ppm off. I see other radiosondes in other parts of the US on the HabHub map, but there are apparently no other auto_rx stations in the southeast, so there's no balloons on the map in my area. Any ideas of what to look at?
[22:07] <ly2en> can you hear any other signals over the discone antenna?
[22:07] <ly2en> like, PMR, ham radio, etc.?
[22:09] <k4jcw> Not really sure. It's on a RPi 4 with no speakers. Haven't tried any other digital modes. I do know the discone works, and if I disconnect the antenna the plot drops way below the threshold, across the board.
[22:11] <ON3JT_Joost> The closest launch site I could find is near Roanoke (via https://radiosondy.info/maps/web_map.php?latest_flights=1) and even that is about 300 miles away.
[22:12] <k4jcw> Interesting. I could have sworn the Peachtree City, GA launched balloons. But that may explain the lack of data.
[22:16] <ON3JT_Joost> Maybe on 1676 MHz? => https://www.weather.gov/upperair/factsheet
[22:19] <SA6BSS-Mike1> just put the v3 in a wind machine and try it under hdsdr sdr console or something similar
[22:20] <SA6BSS-Mike1> you will then clearly see if the discone is working or not
[22:22] <k4jcw> KFFC (P'tree City) is listed as a launch site, at least as of 2019.
[22:22] <k4jcw> Put it in a wind machine... What does that mean?
