[04:41] Dan-K2VOL (~Dan-K2VOL@135-180-7-102.fiber.dynamic.sonic.net) joined #highaltitude.
[04:41] <Dan-K2VOL> Ahh I think I'm in
[04:42] <Dan-K2VOL> Hi @Darkside
[04:43] <Darkside> hey!
[04:43] <Dan-K2VOL> Good to be back :-)
[04:43] <Darkside> so yeah, that looks like one of the older imets?
[04:43] <Dan-K2VOL> yeah very old
[04:43] <Darkside> the imet-1 i have here has a '6 kHz bandwidth' sticker on the side
[04:44] <Dan-K2VOL> Ok I remember using those at loon, these are the wide bandwidth originals
[04:45] <Darkside> hrm
[04:45] <Darkside> yeah i dont know much about those sorry... i never added support for them in auto_rx because i thought they were obsolete
[04:46] <Dan-K2VOL> looks like 50KHz. it is AFSK, I'm routing the output via an audio channel to SkySonde.
[04:47] <Dan-K2VOL> they were the only ones with an XDATA serial input until recently, which is why I'm still using them
[04:48] <Darkside> oh damn, if its AFSK then putting a notch in th emiddle will likely break FM demodulation
[04:49] <Darkside> if it was true FSK then you might have gotten away with it
[04:49] <Dan-K2VOL> Do you support XDATA?
[04:50] <Dan-K2VOL> Hmm how about just reducing the amplitude of the middle?
[04:51] <Darkside> i dont decode XDATA on the imets, no
[04:51] <Darkside> only on the vaisala sondes
[04:54] <Dan-K2VOL> I'll have to look into your program more, I've sort of avoided all linux solutions, it's usually so infrequent that I do the sondes that I need a quick GUI download for windows or mac that gives immediate gui feedback of what's happening
[04:54] <SpacenearUS> New position from 03BSS31 after 0315 hours silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=BSS31
[04:54] <Dan-K2VOL> But I do have a raspberry pi that I've used an SDR on before
[04:55] <Darkside> yeah skysonde is probably better for decoding the research sonde stuff
[04:55] <Darkside> auto_rx is reallt only about positional information, not about the other telemetry
[04:57] <Dan-K2VOL> Ahh gotcha, that's great to know, I've been curious to listen for the local met soundings. Does auto_rx support the gigahertz band?
[04:57] <Dan-K2VOL> The local office switched to them a few years ago
[04:57] <Darkside> urgh
[04:57] <Darkside> yeah it kind of does
[04:58] <Darkside> you need to specify the channels, the automatic peak detection stuff doesn't work on the 1680 MHz band well
[04:58] <Darkside> it'll decode the LMS6 1680 MHZ sondes. there's quite a few stations tracking them now
[04:59] <Dan-K2VOL> interesting, what does peak detection do? is that how it picks up any sonde automatically in the band?
[05:01] <Dan-K2VOL> does your program decode the 50khz imet-1?
[05:03] <Darkside> yes, and no
[05:03] <Darkside> (yes - peak detection finds sonde signals and attempt to decode their type before starting a decoder)
[05:03] <Darkside> (no - i don't support the 50 kHz iMet-1)
[05:06] <Dan-K2VOL> gotcha, I do have a pile of new RS-41s which also have the XDATA port, is there any interest in supporting it on that sonde? I'd like to set up an unmanned station on a ridge here so I don't have to worry about my car antenna doing the job
[05:06] <Darkside> at the moment the RS41 XDATA output is dumped to the log files auto_Rx produces
[05:06] <Darkside> i dont make any attempt to decode it
[05:06] <Dan-K2VOL> but it's in ASCII?
[05:06] <Darkside> hex actually
[05:07] <Dan-K2VOL> oh right, that's how I input it to the serial port
[05:07] <Dan-K2VOL> that's ok
[05:07] <Darkside> it would be good having someone like yourself check the logged XDATA output is matches what you input!
[05:07] <Darkside> because so far we really only have some data from ozone sondes, and we really dont know how valid it is
[05:07] <Dan-K2VOL> I would be happy to! is there an example of the log file format on your github?
[05:08] <Darkside> ahhhhh not really lol
[05:08] <Darkside> its just CSV
[05:08] <Dan-K2VOL> I actually send using one field in the ozonesonde template, (too lazy to make a custom entry in skysonde) I could stuff values into all the fields and
[05:09] <Darkside> timestamp,serial,frame,lat,lon,alt,vel_v,vel_h,heading,temp,humidity,type,freq_mhz,snr,f_error_hz,sats,batt_v,burst_timer,aux_data
[05:09] <Dan-K2VOL> nice! CSV is great
[05:09] <Darkside> 2020-08-29T01:03:10.000Z,R2310709,301,-34.72076,138.69286,86.3,-0.1,0.5,53.5,-273.0,-1.0,RS41,400.500,31.4,937,7,3.0,-1,-1
[05:09] <Dan-K2VOL> perfect!
[05:09] <Darkside> aux_data field is -1 if no data, should be hex bytes if there's XDATA coming in
[05:10] <Darkside> the RS41 decoded temp values are within 0.5 degrees or so, humidity is a bit iffy at the moment, as the calculations are not done correctly
[05:11] <Darkside> doesnt compensate for temperature of the humidity sensor correctly
[05:11] <Dan-K2VOL> yeah I don't have the proper ground calibration box to setup the RS41, so the actual temp/humidity accuracy of each sonde is a tossup here
[05:11] <Dan-K2VOL> oh with the defrost heater on the sensor I guess that would be important
[05:11] <Darkside> yep
[05:12] <Darkside> i think RH ends up being about within 5-10% of vaisalas values, gets worse as the sonde gets colder
[05:12] <Dan-K2VOL> I'm generally just roughly interested in the humidty vs. temperature for cloud deck detection, so that's probably good enough?
[05:12] <Darkside> yeah
[05:12] <Darkside> you'll see that for sure
[05:12] <Dan-K2VOL> nice
[05:12] <Dan-K2VOL> That's for correlating the dust sensor readings.
[05:13] <Darkside> ooh dust sensor
[05:13] <Darkside> so i recently flew a holographic microscope for the University of Adelaide
[05:14] <Darkside> 405nm laser, onto a CMOS sensor. they were able to image water droplets and ice particles
[05:15] <Dan-K2VOL> oh wow! that's awesome, I'd love to see those
[05:16] <Dan-K2VOL> This was originally to detect when loon balloons were in ice clouds and accumulating frost
[05:16] <Darkside> the original paper is "A low-cost digital holographic imager
[05:16] <Darkside> for calibration and validation of cloud
[05:16] <Darkside> microphysics remote sensing"
[05:16] <Darkside> ugh
[05:16] <Darkside> its a few years old, but it describes the technique
[05:16] <Darkside> recent work has been making the unit a bit more robust and launching it under a HAB
[05:18] <Dan-K2VOL> yeah looks pretty heavy in this paper, but very cool images!
[05:18] <Darkside> oh yeah, its not light even now
[05:18] <Dan-K2VOL> lol
[05:19] <Darkside> lots of work to miniaturise it
[05:19] <Dan-K2VOL> well I need to grab lunch, thank you so much for your help and info Mark, good to chat again :-)

[16:07] <ckruse> Hello. I'm preparing to launch a pico balloon. I was curious whether anyone has experience using hydrogen rather than helium in a mylar pico balloon. I would think that it would be reasonably safe given the small balloon volume, and would have an advantage of greater lifting capacity/volume.
[16:08] <SA6BSS-Mike> No experience myself by there have been a few picoflights using H2 , they should get you about 8% extra alt compared to HE
[16:09] <SA6BSS-Mike> I have a pure H2 generator on order from aliexpress, but it will be here to late for test this season
[16:11] <ckruse> I'll have to search some more and see if there are any writeups on the hydrogen balloons. Would be interested to learn more about their experiences.

[16:13] <ckruse> I've launched one pico balloon before, but it never climbed above 27,000'. I'd like it to be closer to 35-40k to better avoid the weather. Of course hydrogen isn't the only solution, but figured it might be an straightforward performance boost.
[16:13] <SA6BSS-Mike> VE3KCL mostly uses H2 on his flights
