[07:26] <EA4GPZ> Hi, this is some telemetry I received from the QO-100 balloon in the last hour or so:
[07:26] <EA4GPZ> 1WP DL7AD/$$D,BN56UQ5135B*23DL7ADD<V9,AE /MBN56VQ74358*5DDL7ADD"G\\6G$$D,BN56WQ04356*55DL7ADD:dmDDDDsDMkE?~^5}û%eO0  J0q?;o6@lPüOL$ e'/H{
[07:37] <DL7AD> EA4GPZ: thx
[07:40] <DL7AD> EA4GPZ: But there are more recent packets. BN56WQ04 is more east than BN56UQ5135B. (Note, that you have to add lon=lon+256 to get to the correct locator. There is an overflow bug in the tracker)
[07:40] <SpacenearUS> New position from 03DK0LG after 0314 hours silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=DK0LG
[07:44] <EA4GPZ> DL7AD: this is all I got for now. Decoding such a weak signal will depend on dish size, clock stability and luck.
[07:45] <EA4GPZ> BN56WQ04 also appears in my data
[07:51] <Darkside> oh hi dani
[07:51] <Darkside> <-- VK5QI
[07:57] <EA4GPZ> Hi Mark!
[07:59] <Darkside> DL7AD is also going to have a go at using the 4FSK+golay mode ive been using for HABs for a while via QO-100
[07:59] <Darkside> eventually :P
[07:59] <Darkside> probably run it at 25 baud, aybe lower
[08:12] <EA4GPZ> That would be quite interesting
[08:12] <EA4GPZ> Beware the clock drift when running at very low rate, though
[08:13] <Darkside> yes, it will be interesting to see how that goes..
[08:13] <Darkside> david's modem falls over a bit below about 25 baud, probably need a bit of work
[08:13] <Darkside> but down to 25 baud its as per theory
[08:14] <EA4GPZ> With a TCXO-based GPSDO I measured the coherence time to be around 50 to 100ms. The clock in the HAB will be more likely worse than that, so anything higher than 10ms coherent integration might be pushing it too far.
[08:15] <Darkside> hrm, and this will be an issue even with FSK?
[08:16] <EA4GPZ> Well, the advantage is that the transmitter runs at 2.4GHz, while this experiment was done for the receiver at 10GHz. So we have a factor 4 margin.
[08:16] <Darkside> i wonder if the bin width on the FSK tone filter could be widened
[08:17] <EA4GPZ> Yes and no. Typically you want to integrate coherently each symbol. Of course you can chop up the symbols into shorter coherent integrations and add non-coherently. This is the same as widening the bin.
[08:17] <Darkside> and its a non-coherent FSK demod, not sure if that makes a difference?
[08:17] <Darkside> oh hm
[08:17] kristianpaul (~paul@unaffiliated/kristianpaul) left irc: Ping timeout: 240 seconds
[08:17] <EA4GPZ> But the theory tells us that in this case it's better to run at a higher symbol rate and use lower rate FEC.
[08:18] <Darkside> yeah ok, i havent gone lower than r=1/2
[08:18] <EA4GPZ> But there are many FEC algorithms to try, many limitations, etc. The problem is far from trivial.
[08:18] <Darkside> that olivia modem that DL7AD is using now is something like r=1/64, if you squint
[08:19] <Darkside> no wait, 7/64 i think
[08:19] <Darkside> one character is spread out to 64 bits
[08:24] <DL7AD> 64 chips, not bits :P
[08:25] <DL7AD> baudrate is 125baud and bitrate is around 7.8
[08:26] <Darkside> i guess it still counts as about r=7/64 fec, maybe
[08:26] <Darkside> would be interested to know what the acheived coding gain is though
[08:26] <Darkside> over regular nFSK i mean
[08:28] <EA4GPZ> 7.8/125 = 0.0624, which is neither 7/64 nor 1/64.
[08:28] <DL7AD> Hang on. I will look for the exact math.
[08:29] <Darkside> "Every 64-bit vector represents a 7-bit ASCII character"
[08:33] <Darkside> there used to be a good page with the technical details of olivia, cant find it anymore
[08:33] <EA4GPZ> Wikipedia has a good description (this is what I'm reading now)
[08:33] <EA4GPZ> It also seems to me that the coding rate is 7/64
[08:34] <Darkside> yes, that was my conclusion
[08:34] <EA4GPZ> Regardless of the number of tones, by the way. For 2^k tones we just send k ASCII chars in parallel.
[08:34] <Darkside> but im wondering how using hadamard codes like this compares to other FEC
[08:35] <DL7AD> craag: With a little luck we hit Harbin, China. Sunrise is 20:34z. It's the most northern city with APRS Igates.
[08:35] <SpacenearUS> New position from 03N6CVO-13 after 0318 hours silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=N6CVO-13
[08:35] <EA4GPZ> In fact the math works out with 31.25 baud and 1.46 characters per second for the 8/250 mode (http://www.w1hkj.com/FldigiHelp-3.22/olivia_page.html)
[08:36] <EA4GPZ> 1.46*7/31.25/3 = 7/64
[08:36] <Darkside> so DL7AD is running 2-FSK, 125 baud?
[08:36] <EA4GPZ> Yes
[08:37] <EA4GPZ> That's 13.67 bits per second
[08:37] <Darkside> it would be interesting to do some proper BER (character error rate?) vs Eb/N0 analysis on all these modems
[08:37] <Darkside> im not sure its really been done
[08:38] <EA4GPZ> I think it's easy and well know (no that something has applied this to Olivia, though). The 2-tone case is simpler (at least in my mind).
[08:38] <Darkside> i guess in the olivia case since its sending 7-bit ascii you can work that out to a effective BER
[08:38] <DL7AD> okay I'm going to bed, I have fixed broken packets from the balloon all night.
[08:39] <Darkside> i havent seen much in the way of actual performance testing of these modem implementations
[08:40] <EA4GPZ> You get soft bits by subtracting power detected over two tones. You group 64 symbols, then pick the Walsh vector that matches best.
[08:41] <EA4GPZ> By the way something I don't understand: each 7-bit ASCII char is encoded as one of 64 Walsh functions. It would seem to me you need 128 Walsh functions.
[08:42] <EA4GPZ> I guess it plays with both the Walsh functions and their inverses.
[08:43] <EA4GPZ> So the fact is that when you the math I think this is roughtly equivalent to some m-FSK with a large m. You have m possibilities and just pick the one with largest power.

[09:00] <EA4GPZ> If you think about it, we're choosing between 128 orthogonal waveforms, so this is quite similar to 128-FSK. So the BER I expect to get is more or less the same as with 128-FSK. This doesn't rival a state of the art FEC scheme. One might even go and say this is no FEC at all.
[09:07] <EA4GPZ> However, for its intended use, which is short messages, it doesn't perform so badly. Here a graph of m-FSKs (unfortunately only up to 32-FSK) https://www.researchgate.net/publication/325060239_M-FSK_in_Multi_Coding_and_Channel_Environments/figures
[09:09] <EA4GPZ> For BER around 1e-2 and 1e-3 we might be around 2 or 3dB Eb/N0, which is not at all bad. State-of-the art FEC might improve this by 1 or 2dB only. The main problem is that the BER curve doesn't fall steeply. If you need ultra-low BER, then you need high Eb/N0.
