[07:45] <PE2BZ> The new data does not appear to be added to the old :-(
[07:45] <DK6OV> It goes up, than goes down and now it goes up again? Does Essen now use quad-copters instead of balloons? :-)
[07:47] <PE2BZ> Yesterdays afternoon sonde also had 1.2 - 0.8 m/s descent rate. That one might be recovered today near " Zeewolde "
[07:48] <PE2BZ> 9.5 km and rising.... Is it sunny in the UK ?
[07:48] <DK6OV> The sonde is now higher than the fist time. I never seen something like this.

[08:01] <eor> that balloon could have a slow leak
[08:03] <PE2BZ> We assume it got extra weight from the ice (hail) above the Netherlands. It has been down to 129 m altitude last night.
[08:05] <DK6OV> It now reached 11000m!

[08:15] <eor> PE2BZ, that's an interesting theory. if the sonde is covered in ice, it would probably show completely bogus temperature data
[08:18] <PE2BZ> More likely the balloon was covered in Ice ? The sonde might have been dragged through the NorthSea however...

[09:07] <dfm> PE2BZ [07:44] Sondemonitor does not connect the dots. On sondehub.org there is a gap between 3UTZ and 5UTC. Maybe a james-bond-like change of payload...
[09:08] <Darkside> dfm: hi! I saw you merged in the soft input stuff. will integrate that into the testing branch this weekend
[09:11] <PE2BZ> dfm sondemonitor does not even redraw the location on the map. GPS and altitude are OK but it' s still north of Norwich but on RS41 tracker it' s on the right position.
[09:12] <PE2BZ> But with 1.9 V battery left....
[09:12] <dfm> Hi. Maybe it can be tested that the soft input does not make it worse. For lms6x you could also turn on --vit2.
[09:15] <dfm> The critical point is the frame-detection.
[09:16] <Darkside> dfm: yeah im going to add it into the testing stuff

[09:53] <dfm> Darkside: Your test samples simulate AWGN, right?
[09:53] <dfm> Was looking at the bit-errors of RS41 in the sample/generated data. At level "7.5dB" I get (with my demodulator, so for others could be 6dB or 9dB, doesn't matter) approx. 24 byte errors per frame, sometimes more (cannot be corrected with standard RS), sometimes less. But at this rate it is almost always only 1 bit per byte in error (nicely
[09:53] <SIbot> In real units: 41 in = 1 m
[09:53] <dfm> distributed by the simulation). Reed-Solomon is good for burst errors, don't know how much more of these I have in real live reception. Also depends also on other receiving conditions.
[09:53] <Darkside> dfm: yes, its AWGN
[09:54] <Darkside> didnt see much point simulating anything fancier, like fading due to swinging
[10:01] <dfm> No no, that's not what I was trying to say. It is just interesting, at a certain point the data is on the edge of being able to correct. Some soft info and the additional CRC could help, but for erasures it is only 1 bit most of the time that is affected...

[10:33] <dfm> Interesting flight, it recovered somehow, but between 3Z and 5Z it stayed low, so noone could observe it..? The low ascent rate was right from the start. I was wondering why it was 3min late at 800m...
[10:41] <PE2BZ> dfm my guess would be that, with unwinder, 45 m " wire" between balloon and sonde, the tracker even got dragged through the water. I live 7 km from Hook of Holland, and I have RX setup at 27 m altitude, most sondes which land in the Northsea I do catch to about 65 m GPS altitude, around the same area,
[10:41] <PE2BZ> It was transmitting with interrupts resetting the frame counter to 0
[10:43] <PE2BZ> http://www.pe2bz.nl/hamradio/skymonitor/rtlTest_power.png
[10:43] <SM0ULC-David> PE2BZ: what script for the png-generation?
[10:44] <PE2BZ> around 06:35 I expected to see a new Essen. It was the one from last night, restarted, and if you zoom in you can see it restarted a couple of times.
[10:44] <PE2BZ> SM0ULC-David, a Python ( wasserfall.py ) script with FTP upload in it.
[10:45] <PE2BZ> websdr.pe2bz.nl:8080 shows the last 3 days history
[10:48] <dfm> Probably the sonde got wet, if the counter was reset. The full power mode is turned on at approx 600m, or if it still has the station-pressure data, maybe 800m. After restart maybe it does this again when reaching that altitude. Still surprising how the balloon can get up in the air again. And that the sensor still works.
[10:50] <SM0ULC-David> PE2BZ: cool
[10:59] <dfm> Can the sun light heat the balloon just enough that it recovers from floating?
[11:00] <SM0ULC-David> PE2BZ: the script is published somewhere?
[11:04] <dfm> don't want to rule out a covert operation. ;) Juelich was launching radiosondes, too...
[11:09] <PE2BZ> SM0ULC-David, I can share it with you, with removal of the part with my FTP account login ;-)
[11:10] <SM0ULC-David> would be great
[11:10] <PE2BZ> dfm, guess it can. PC4L' s TTN tracker went down from >4000 meter to <1250 meter in one night. Big surprise the next day it woke up at 3200 meter and ascended to 4100 and repeated down to 3500 and up to 4100 the next 3 days.

[11:16] <dfm> Don't know if it makes a difference in daily/night radiosonde operations, and if the automatic launchers would compensate for that. Looks like a small effect, and on different altitudes maybe different effect.
[11:23] <dfm> The Essen 12Z today has more gas in the balloon, I guess. It outperforms the other station at the 12km mark! Also there are back to S... again.
