[14:59] <ThunderStruck> We launched a balloon from near Griffith today. We travelled 130Km from our hotel in west Wyalong. Nothing special. A regular flight. We were amazed to have the balloon fly all the way back and land in the hotel property only 200m from our room where I am writing this tonight. The flight was headed to a town near West Wyalong but flew higher than
[14:59] <ThunderStruck> the expected burst altitude 30,000m and landed long by 20km. It reached 35.7km. I am sleeping back in my hotel room marvelling at the randomness of things. You could not plan that flight and achieve it. But it did happen. UpLift 45. One to Remember.
[15:00] <ThunderStruck> It was call sign VK2HAB-11
[15:04] <ThunderStruck> if anyone saw our dump into a lake 2 weeks ago, we recovered it the next day. The lake was essentially dry but we landed in shin deep water with 5he cameras all out of 5he water. It is a very fortunate.our SPOT tracker that was also used today was under water for 24 hours on that flight, but worked just fine today.
[15:05] <ThunderStruck> that is 45 releases for 45 recoveries. Loving the joy of the chase.

[15:06] <ThunderStruck> i am only seeing my posts. Cant see any other posts???
[15:06] <SA6BSS-Mike> we see it
[15:07] <ThunderStruck> se your posts now
[15:07] <SA6BSS-Mike> 5-9 :)
[15:13] <ThunderStruck> It has been a few years since I was on last. An older board. Pretty quiet compared to before.
[15:14] <fsphil> 100% recovery rate? get out :D
[15:14] <ThunderStruck> is anyone else here flying with ADS-B aircraft transponders?
[15:15] <ThunderStruck> yes 100%. Darkside can confirm. Other proof available. We are careful, have backup tracking and tenacious in recovery.
[15:17] <ThunderStruck> i drive 6 hours so that we are in flame land with Westfields and good APRS and mobile phone coverage
[15:18] <ThunderStruck> that should say farmland
[15:19] <fsphil> I think I'm at <50% .. I stopped counting :)
[15:19] <fsphil> in my defence, I'm not in australia
[15:22] <ThunderStruck> I did 2 flights in Croatia monitored by Darkside as he built some gear for us. The rest are in Australia. I chose the area carefully here in Australia. We fly $10,000 payloads and you dont do that without a good recovery rate.
[15:23] <fsphil> indeed
[15:24] <fsphil> many of mine where designed to be lost, cheap components, all images transmitted etc.
[15:26] <ThunderStruck> speaking of Defence, we won a lucrative Defence contract to fly sensors. Announced last week. Moving to tracking using 250 watt ADS-B and 900MHz soo we will not show up here unless non commercial flights. We have been building a commercial APRS tracker that does amazing things and cant use it much anymore. Very funny
[15:26] <ThunderStruck> Im a strong believer in that if you rake the attitude that you will lose it, then you will.
[15:28] <ThunderStruck> i still cant believe todays flight. 130km by road to the launch site and it landed back in our hotel property 200m from our room. That is crazy
[15:29] <ThunderStruck> nothing I did. Just pure randomness
[15:30] <ThunderStruck> i do love that you are building stuff for live downloads. Great work
[15:36] <ThunderStruck> Fsphil, are you in the UK? My mate Steve Randal is also claiming 100% recovery with over 100 flights. He is UK based.
[15:37] <ThunderStruck> He purposely put on on the ocean, but declared it before flight.
[15:38] <fsphil> ThunderStruck: Middle of N.Ireland, surrounded by water in most directions except south
[15:39] <fsphil> and live near a really big lake
[15:42] <ThunderStruck> Then I get it. You are in a tough environment. I have a declared area with our civil aviation safety authority And it is 200km wide and over 100km high and that is just for my release area. I can land outside and only one lake I have to avoide and I ditch there 2 weeks ago. Totally screwed that one up but recovered it.
[15:43] <ThunderStruck> i got it easy compared to you. That is so hard
[15:43] <ThunderStruck> You cant use APRS either.
[15:44] <fsphil> yeah, not on amateur bands at least. although honestly that's probably been a good thing
[15:45] <fsphil> APRS is so clunky. I would like the option of a bit more power and wider bandwidth though
[15:45] <ThunderStruck> ISM band?
[15:45] <daveake> UK HAB is all milliwatts and punybaud
[15:46] Laurenceb (~laurence@110.207.208.46.dyn.plus.net) left irc: Ping timeout: 260 seconds
[15:48] <ThunderStruck> just about to set up a network of RFD900 modems thought our area. They are 1 watt I believe. Using it for Pixhawk ArduPilot systems that we are flying with auto tracking for high bandwidth on 5 Gigs. We can get 70km with out much trouble with 4K video
[15:50] pc4l_hab (~PC4L@host-66o28h.gs1.zeelandnet.nl) joined #highaltitude.
[15:50] <ThunderStruck> the full story is that we are about to test fly a powered balloon to fly in the stratosphere to a point, hold position and return to land near the launch point. Www.thunderstruck.space
[15:51] <fsphil> you didn't fly one over japan recently by any chance? :)
[15:51] <ThunderStruck> No, staying put here in Australia with local flights.
[15:53] <ThunderStruck> developing the elusive stratospheric air ship is the goal with our balloon work. Game changer.
[15:53] <fsphil> a mystery HAB made their national news today, https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200617_23/
[15:53] <daveake> Australia seems to be HAB-friendly. Aside from the killer spiders and snakes and drop bears ...
[15:53] PC4L (~PC4L@host-66o28h.gs1.zeelandnet.nl) left irc: Ping timeout: 265 seconds
[15:54] <fsphil> oh they give you an anti-drop bear hat. I didn't see a single one while I was there, so it must work
[15:54] <daveake> :D
[15:56] <ThunderStruck> ha! No one dies from snake and spiders on the whole. Someone finally died from a spider bite last year but nothing for decades prior to that. The hoop snakes are the worst. Roll down the hills at high speeds to get you. Hold their tail in their mouths to form a hoop.....
[15:59] <ThunderStruck> we do live to tease the tourists... mind you our gliding snakes are real. They flatten their bodies and glide in an S shape and that is real, nit a joke. They climb trees too to get the height, but none of 5hst is directed at humans. Just to get to prey
[16:02] <ThunderStruck> so I guess no one here is building stratospheric ships. Maybe 10kg payload with so.at powered propulsion? I was hoping to make contact. None the less test flights for us soon.
[16:04] <daveake> So aside from the snakes that glide out of trees at you, and the ones that roll down hills at you, sounds really safe .... :)
[16:06] <ThunderStruck> Safer than foreigners believe. Ive had red back spiders living around my house. Also found funnel web spiders in 5he garden. You wear gloves and never an issue. Its not l8ke they hunt you down.
[16:09] <fsphil> I've been there twice and genuinely didn't see any spiders or snakes outside of a zoo
[16:09] <ThunderStruck> i was nearly killed by a massive brown bear that came out of hibernation early. It ripped my tent apart with me in it. I.ve had cougars following me near the Mexican boarder. The US is a dangerous place compared to Australia where the top predator, humans aside, is a dingo
[16:10] <fsphil> and they're so cute too
[16:11] <ThunderStruck> i did forget sharks and crockodiles, but crocks are only in the tropics. I grew up on Bindi beach. Safe as anything in the water.
