[15:15] <daveake> LoRa watch demo - https://youtu.be/YidimvA8VzQ
[15:20] <chris_99> neat, re. lora does that use TTN, or..?
[15:22] <daveake> No, it's UKHAS format
[15:22] <daveake> I had to reprogram the GPS/LoRa board because it was LoRaWAN only :/
[15:22] <chris_99> ah, so that would pickup signals directly from the balloon then?
[15:22] <daveake> Yes
[15:22] <chris_99> neat
[15:23] <daveake> That's what it's doing here - 434MHz LoRa packets direct from a tracker (the new PITS board as it happens)
[15:24] <daveake> The LoRa/GPS firmware has other issues for this application, like not reporting GPS altitude (so I can tell if balloon is up a tree or not) or GPS direction (so I know distance but not direction to the balloon)
[15:25] <daveake> It would have been a lot easier if the GPS and LoRa were connected to the main processor (ESP32) instead of to an STM32 on a daughter board
[15:25] <daveake> There was more work in coding the STM32, mainly because of the lack of documentation
[15:26] <chris_99> heh, so it's esp32 --- stm32 ---- lora chip?
[15:26] <daveake> Yes
[15:26] <daveake> stm32 has LoRa on SPI, and GPS on serial
[15:26] <chris_99> aha
[15:26] <chris_99> what chip is it using for lora?
[15:26] <daveake> SX127x
[15:27] <daveake> The GPS is some weird Sony thing that doesn't even send NMEA till it gets kicked up the arse with a cold/warm reset command
[15:27] <chris_99> odd
[15:27] <daveake> Fortunately someone else did something similar (SoftRF) before, and the info I needed was in his source code on github
[15:28] <daveake> Wish I'd checked that first instead of trying to find documention :/
[15:29] <daveake> Both ESP32 and STM32 are programmed with Arduino - install the board definitions and go (basically)
[15:29] <daveake> On the STM32, you have to tell it not to use the default serial ports, because those are on different pins to are actually used
[15:30] <daveake> So yeah, a few things to figure out, but after that I basically ported my existing receiver and GPS code and it just worked (TM)
[15:30] <chris_99> :) is the screen hard/easy to drive
[15:31] <daveake> There's a basic library with line, rectangle, circle and text primitives, and that's what I'm using
[15:31] <chris_99> aha, cool
[15:31] <daveake> Some of the sample programs use some UI framework but I didn't really need that
[15:32] Laurenceb (~laurence@223.141.208.46.dyn.plus.net) left irc: Ping timeout: 264 seconds
[15:32] <chris_99> mm, gotcha
[15:32] <daveake> My buttons are just fileld rectangles
[15:32] <daveake> My buttons are just filled rectangles with text on top, and I take a screen touch position and look for the button it's inside
[15:33] <daveake> All a bit 80's but didn't need anything more
[15:34] <daveake> I need to add some swipe code to change screens, as the actual button is fiddly
[15:38] <chris_99> i'm just looking on aliexpress, the watch is like $32, and shipping $18 heh
[15:39] <daveake> Heh, I think I paid about £50 total Be sure to get the one with the LoRa+GPS board. Also, they do 2 variants one 434MHz (S78G) and one 868/915 (S76G)
[15:39] <daveake> There's a new slim one coming out next week. I don't know if it has the GPS/LoRa option (I've asked)
[15:40] <chris_99> oh interesting
[15:40] <chris_99> either version would work in the UK i assume?
[15:40] <daveake> https://twitter.com/lilygo9/status/1251123569934757888
[15:40] <daveake> 434MHz best for HAB
[15:40] <chris_99> ahh
[15:41] <daveake> You'll need an ST-Link programmer - £3 or so - and make up a custom programming lead
[15:41] <daveake> I'll blog this at the weekend probably
[15:41] <chris_99> gotcha, i've got a 'j-link' which should work for the stm32
[15:42] <chris_99> cool, will look out for your post
[15:42] <chris_99> alas TTN seems to be only on 868MHz for some reason
[15:45] <daveake> Also And much wider bandwidth than typically used for HAB, and the "fair use" Tx rate is very limiting. Not ideal at all.
[15:50] <chris_99> ahh
