[17:51] <nickoe> PE2BZ: Do you know if there is custom firmware for the DFM09?
[17:52] <PE2BZ> https://www.graw.de/products/accessories/uw3/
[17:52] <SA6BSS-Mike> that was what I thought :)
[17:52] <PE2BZ> nickoe I did not hear about it. Only re-use I know of is as GPS mouse
[17:53] <SA6BSS-Mike> its a 7$ gps so and verry versetile to reuse in your own projects
[17:54] <nickoe> Yeah, but I thought it would be cool to be able to use it as a normal aprs tracker as well, and on 70cm band
[17:56] <nickoe> But I need to undertstanf if I need jtag mode to program the stm or I can use SWD
[17:56] <PE2BZ> I have not even checked which radio chip is on board.
[17:56] <SA6BSS-Mike> im lookig for that as well...
[17:56] <SA6BSS-Mike> but as its a stm it probably use the same programmer as the rs41
[17:58] <nickoe> what inter face is used there?
[17:58] <SA6BSS-Mike> st link??
[17:58] <SA6BSS-Mike> st-link v2
[18:00] <PE2BZ> For the RS-41 indeed. And for ease of work, if you update the firmware on the ST-link V2 you can no longer use the ST-link software but you have to use the ST cube programmer which in my opinion is not that easy to use. I bought another ST-Link V2 and labelled it with ¨do not upgrade¨
[18:00] <SIbot> In real units: 41 in = 1 m
[18:00] <PE2BZ> 1m is quite a big RS41

[18:01] <SA6BSS-Mike> PE2BZ: good to know!!
[18:02] <nickoe> Why would I need to update the fw on the programmer?
[18:03] <SA6BSS-Mike> you dont, and dont do it
[18:04] <PE2BZ> nickoe to flash the RS41 as GPS mouse I had to flash a .elf file instead of a .bin or .hex file. That only worked with the cube software which required me to update the firmware in the ST-Link V2
[18:04] <PE2BZ> I´d better asked the author for a .hex file....
[18:05] <PE2BZ> The RS41 from Payerne (Switzerland) last night nicely floated at 35500 m
[18:05] <PE2BZ> at 05:30 it passed Munchen at the East of it.

[18:07] <SA6BSS-Mike> ahh, now that I read I see that the production pic is for the new DFM17, thought it was starnge it sat a ublox on it
[18:10] <SA6BSS-Mike> the dfm09 does not seems to have a dedicated radio chip, oscl and a pll setting freq?
[18:13] <nickoe> this suggests that it can be tweaked for the 70 cm band, https://www.eevblog.com/forum/blog/eevblog-1207-arm-dev-boards-falling-from-the-sky!/?action=dlattach;attach=723117
[18:14] <SA6BSS-Mike> yes, and some down on 3-5Mhz I think
[18:31] <nickoe> But I find it weird that the fingers-welt thread does not name the pins on the understide of the pcb, that are not the same as the top opens.
[18:44] <nickoe> Hmm, it looks like the SWDIO and SWCLK is on the smt non populated header near the gps

[19:34] <VE6AZX> Just a quick question for anyone interested or who has a moment. I'm working with a prof. to fly a latex balloon (totex 1500g or so) to 32 km and get it to float by venting hydrogen or helium out of a valve assembly. Anyone tried this? I've seen some attempts (e.g. stanford's ValBal project) but they seem to focus on the 20-25 km altitude regime.
[19:34] <VE6AZX> If I can get the thing to float up there, any idea how long it might last?
[19:56] <SpeedEvil> Flexible gas balloons are not passively stable even if you get them into a momentarily stable trim.
[19:57] <SpeedEvil> That is - you will in addition need ballast if you want to get it stable this way.
[20:09] <VE6AZX> fascinating, thanks.
[20:12] <nickoe> I wonder how much the day vs night matters here, but I suspect, without doing much research that the temperature of the baloon will mater a lot.
[20:15] <VE6AZX> this matches our observations so far
[20:15] <VE6AZX> we have not been fully successful yet.

[20:59] <daveake> generally the latex floaters pop once they rise in the morning
[21:00] <daveake> There was one that lasted IIRC 3 days, from USA and landed in Morocco
[21:01] <daveake> Allowing some gas to release might save them
[21:04] <VE6AZX> that's what we're trying to do basically
[21:04] <VE6AZX> We've got a science instrument that needs to be up there for a few hours.
[21:04] <VE6AZX> I made a valve that fits in the neck of the balloon and can release gas quickly, then seal shut.
[21:04] <VE6AZX> it works by lowering a rubber ball on a string against a pvc pipe wedged up in the neck
[21:05] <VE6AZX> on a personal note I'd love to fly a xband repeater on a valved latex balloon and see how far we could get
