[05:46] <YO3ICT> Hello. Need some help uploading sonde data to radiosondy.info from auto_rx. Can someone guide me through the process?
[05:48] <Darkside> eh?
[05:48] <Darkside> you should just have to enter your callsign and APRS-IS passcode
[05:49] <Darkside> and it should 'just work'
[05:49] <Darkside> i have noticed that radiosondy.info appears to be not forwarding all traffic onto the rest of aprs-is
[05:50] <YO3ICT> Hi Darkside
[05:51] <YO3ICT> I noticed that too. Ok, if that is the case, I will stick with the Euro APRS server.
[05:51] <Darkside> yeah ive mentioned it to the guy that runs it
[05:51] <Darkside> but no idea whats going on..
[05:52] <Darkside> i think the data still ends up in radiosondy.info's DB
[05:52] <YO3ICT> Ok
[05:53] <YO3ICT> Any luck with those pictures from your friend? With the little sonde
[06:06] <Darkside> no
[06:58] <sq5nwi> If you want data to be forwarder to APRS-IS use port 14580. If you want only to end in radiosondy.info just use 14590.

[11:57] <mick_dublin> Hi everyone. Im having difficulty getting a decent radio signal from the PITS board. The RSSI is dropped to -50db after only a few meters, and down to -80db at 100 meters, then -100bd at about 300 meters. Weve checked the receiving antenna, and weve purchase the correct 434 transmitting antenna from Uptronics, changed the cable, no
[11:57] <mick_dublin> difference. Any ideas what the problem could be, or how to investigate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
[11:58] <Darkside> daveake: ^ (though he might be a bit busy with a launch)
[11:59] <PE2BZ> mick_dublin, what antenna connector ? Wifi uses reverse SMA, which fits the SMA connector but misses the links between the center connector
[12:00] <daveake> Yeah check connectors, check for shorts from signal to ground, and continuity from board to aerial
[12:00] <daveake> Not my flight Darkside and I'm not chasing :)
[12:01] <daveake> PE2BZ: yeah looks like camera stopped. That's what I was asking about earlier.
[12:04] itsonlyluis (80f3020b@128.243.2.11) joined #highaltitude.
[12:06] <buzz53> re camera, the Chinese ones we tried stopped when cold. You could stop the oscillator with a freezer spray.
[12:07] <buzz53> It would keep going provided you didn't stop the camera, once stopped it wouldn't restart.
[12:07] <buzz53> But I see CHORTEN camera has restarted, apparently near burst.
[12:07] <chris_99> that's interesting, what kind of oscillator?
[12:09] <buzz53> SMD flatpack, identical in appearance to official Pi. Shame, they are otherwise perfect and about 3 quid.
[12:10] <daveake> Restarted? Good. Strange also.
[12:11] <mick_dublin> daveake Thanks Dave. We are using the correct male and female connectors. We changed these with new ones from Uptronics. Checked for shorts. We also put the antenna directly onto the board in case ir was a cable issue and got the same results. Any further thoughts? Thanks.
[12:11] <chris_99> buzz53: oh gotcha, it was a pi camera, but not the official one?
[12:11] <buzz53> That's right chris.
[12:12] <mick_dublin> What RSSI would you expect at 1km?
[12:13] <Darkside> if its not a perfect line of sight, around -100 is not unreasonable
[12:13] <Darkside> free space path loss over 1km at 434 MHz is 85 db. so in a perfect world, with 10mW TX power and no antenna gain, you'd be seeing -75 dBm RSSI
[12:14] <Darkside> however with obstructions and other non ideal propagation conditions, that is going to be lower
[12:14] <Darkside> the LoRa modem *theoretically* is happy decoding signals down to -120 dBm or so (depending on modulation settings)
[12:15] <Darkside> whats probably more useful is knowing both the RSSI Value but also the SNR of the packet
[12:15] <Darkside> if you have a RSSI of -100 dBm, but the SNR is high, then you know you probably still have a bit of link margin remaning

[12:16] mick_dublin53 (2e07a04f@46.7.160.79) left irc: Remote host closed the connection
[12:18] <bozzey> Could you recommend an 868 antenna PE2BZ ?
[12:20] <mick_dublin> Darkside - Very helpful, thanks! I think our SNR was 6, we'll re-test and check. Would you consider an SNR of 6, with -85db in a 1km free space path acceptable? At a range of 30 - 50km, will we still get a signal?
[12:21] itsonlyluis (80f3020b@128.243.2.11) left irc: Ping timeout: 260 seconds
[12:22] <Darkside> so i think the LoRA modem clips the SNR it sees to some maximum value, maybe 10 dB
[12:22] <Darkside> so you wont see a SNR highe rthan that, but the RSSI will rise
[12:23] <Darkside> maybe try a test where you keep on separating the TX and RX until you lose signal
[12:23] <Darkside> try and make the path as close to line-of-sight as possible, i.e. maybe elevate the transmitter
[12:23] <Darkside> daveake: does your gateway report the noise floor of the rx station?
[12:24] itsonlyluis (80f3020b@128.243.2.11) joined #highaltitude.
[12:25] <Darkside> there are many situations where receiver is swamped by noise emitted by the rpi, or other equipment, so its good to know if your receiver is being limited by that
[12:25] <Darkside> i.e. watch how the noise floor level changes between when you have no antenna connected to the receiver, and when you plug one in
[12:25] <Darkside> if it jumps a significant amount, then it means you may be limited by local noise

[12:39] <mick_dublin> Darkside - Ok, thanks! We'll re-test maybe in a more rural, less noisy environment, with line-of-sight. Last question - what RSSI would you hope for in a 1km line-of-sight test where there isn't much local noise? Presumably better than -85db right?
[12:42] <Darkside> maybe a little bit better
[12:42] <Darkside> but you will be limited by free space path loss
[12:43] <mick_dublin> Ok, many thanks for your help!

[18:41] <WB8ELK> Anyone know why KC9YMN-10 and KC9YMN-1 (that is currently flying) is not showing up on tracker.habhub.org?
[18:43] <WB8ELK> They have made it a lot more difficult to gain access to webchat but think I got it configured now. Anyone seeing this???
[18:44] <WB8ELK> Hello?
[18:46] <superkuh> Nope. No one can see your messages.
[18:46] <superkuh> In fact, you aren't even awake right now. This is a dream.
[18:46] <superkuh> (sorry I can't help you, but maybe someone useful will notice)
