[09:57] <Darkside> Pit[m]: i'd rather not have it upload that often at all
[09:57] <Darkside> if you care so much about the landing positions like that, run local mapping
[09:57] <Darkside> i.e. chasemapper or otherwise
[10:00] <Pit[m]> After landing I have 2 minutes. Or other chaser will get the sonde. I need real-time predict. Does chasemapper have real-time predict?
[10:00] <Darkside> yep
[10:01] <Pit[m]> Ok will try.
[10:01] <Darkside> https://github.com/projecthorus/chasemapper
[10:01] <Darkside> its designed to work well with auto_rx
[10:01] dg2fs (2e5717e8@p2E5717E8.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) joined #highaltitude.
[10:04] <Pit[m]> Smartphone Browser GPS supported?
[10:04] <Darkside> no
[10:04] <Darkside> its designed to be a multi-client application, so its the server that has to know the position
[10:05] <Pit[m]> Ok so I stay with sondehub.
[10:05] <Darkside> its not that hard to set up...
[10:05] <Darkside> and it has some serious benefits over sondehub
[10:05] <Pit[m]> I only use a smartphone for chasing.
[10:05] <Darkside> if you're already running a pi to run auto_rx, you can just run this alongside, and all you need to add is a gps
[10:06] <Darkside> you don't bring your auto_rx station along
[10:06] <Darkside> ?
[10:06] <Pit[m]> At home autorx is running
[10:06] <Darkside> so how do you get a landing position?
[10:07] <Pit[m]> Lora esp tracker
[10:07] <Pit[m]> That small thing
[10:07] <Pit[m]> Is in my pocket
[10:07] <Darkside> right
[10:08] <Darkside> well if you're only going to use a smartphone, then that will be your limitation
[10:08] <Darkside> and i cant help much with that
[10:08] <Pit[m]> But for predict sondehub on smartphone is so good
[10:08] <Darkside> we're not goign to risk degrading habhub for other users by letting people upload at very high rates
[10:09] <Darkside> eventually we should be able to scale back the server-side rate limiting
[10:09] <Darkside> at that point you should always end up with the last position showing up
[10:09] <Pit[m]> Is it that much data?
[10:09] <Darkside> the problem is the processing on the server
[10:09] <Darkside> we have had habhub lagging by up to an hour due to the load
[10:10] <Darkside> that problem *may* be getting solved due to some database cleanup, but we won't be sure for a while
[10:11] <chris_99> what DB engine does it use out of interest
[10:11] <Darkside> couchdb
[10:11] <Darkside> i suspect it seemed like a good idea at the time
[10:11] <Darkside> :P
[10:12] <Darkside> it was written a while ago, and unfortunately the original authors have not had much time to update/maintain things
[10:14] <Darkside> which is fair enough - this was allw written when they were at uni, and they all have dayjobs now
[10:14] <Pit[m]> Ok I will set my upload rate to 150 seconds
[10:15] <Darkside> well if you leave it at a value higher than the rate limit (which should be 120 seconds), then the most recent packet observed will always be uploaded
[10:15] <Darkside> which may be the landing position, or at least the last observed position
[10:15] <Darkside> but i'd seriously suggest having a go at running auto_rx and chasemapper on a pi in the field
[10:15] <Darkside> its a very powerful chase tracking system
[10:15] <Darkside> and means you are not reliant on an online service provided to you for free, that may go down at any time
[10:18] <akio> as a technical side note, couchdb can be an interesting data backend for _distributed_ data collection. if you dont really care for proper ACID, its "eventual consistency" replication model makes for a reasonable log-sync-feeder. ;)

[12:12] <electricfalcon91> Hi I think I'm registered now, so this should send through. Apologies if you got loads of duplicate hellos from me. I've just stumbled across UKHAS and wondered what the scene was like in London, given all the air traffic (I live near Heathrow!)

[12:33] <electricfalcon91> That makes sense, thanks! I'll start working through guides on tracking when I'm home. I've played with satellite tracking previously, so should be straightforward! I've just moved to london though so it's pretty noisy!
[12:33] <MedadR> @electricfalcon91 yes indeed there has been one recent launch from London at 4.30am. Here is the message to the mailing list: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/ukhas/Pbkgk_yXC1c/oLk3C_5JAwAJ
[12:34] <MedadR> The got some amazing photos of london. However, due to the air traffic conditions, they had to launch really really early in the morning

[12:45] <electricfalcon91> The google group is great, I'll see if I can keep an eye out and track some launches in london. What tends to be the radius of detection if I set up a tracking station in my home, with RTLSDR simple antenna??
