[07:55] <daveake> Cancelling my GoPro flight today .... I needed to fly a 1600 to get it to fly somewhere good to land, and it's too windy to launch a big balloon on my own.
[07:55] <daveake> Tomorrow has much less wind and easier predictions ... hopefully the CAA can sort out a NOTAM in time.
[07:59] <fsphil> good luck with that
[08:00] <daveake> heh
[08:00] <fsphil> DM might send you a strongly worded email
[08:01] <daveake> Well, mine just needs the notam bit done, and that usually happens within 2-3 hours of me asking.
[08:01] <daveake> DM doesn't see mine :)
[08:02] <daveake> I'm supposed to give them 72 hours but the reason they say that is to stop someone asking on a Sunday for a launch Monday

[09:49] <Petejhsa> Hi. Just preparing our flight train for tomorrows launch and looking for some advice for distances between payload, parachute and balloon.
[09:51] <OZ1SKY_Brian> Hi Petejhsa. I cant advice you, but stay on channel and im sure someone can.
[09:52] Hoogvlieger (~Hoogvlieg@84-26-140-235.cable.dynamic.v4.ziggo.nl) left irc: Quit: Leaving
[09:53] <Petejhsa> thanks
[09:54] <craag> Petejhsa: I tend to do: payload <-20m-> parachute <-10m-> balloon.
[09:56] <Petejhsa> ok. Does there need to be such a big distance between the payload and parachute?
[09:57] <craag> more length overall makes it more stable (think of a pendulum). 2:1 is so that when the balloon remains swing under the parachute on descent, they aren't near the payload.
[09:58] <Petejhsa> That makes sense.
[09:58] <Petejhsa> Many thanks for the help.
[09:58] <daveake> Also, if parachute gets stuck at the top of a tree, the payload might be within reach :)
[09:59] <daveake> But yeah, particularly if you have a camera on-board, long lines make it more stable and less (if you have video) vomit-inducing
[09:59] <craag> More overall length is better for stability and tree-mitigation (keeping the 2:1 ratio), but anything too long can be difficult to handle if launching in wind.
[10:01] <fsphil> too short a cord also increases the chance of the payload hitting the balloon
[10:02] <Petejhsa> Thank you all. Really appreciate the help.
[10:03] <Petejhsa> One more thing... I sent a NOTAM request to the CAA a couple of days ago quoting our permission reference but haven't heard anything back. Is that normal or should I be worried?
[10:04] <craag> totally normal. THey'll get back to you a couple of days before the start of your requested window.
[10:04] <craag> They'll get back to you earlier if there's a problem.
[10:05] <Petejhsa> We're due to launch tomorrow morning!
[10:05] <craag> Ah! Call them.
[10:05] <Petejhsa> We had our permission/exemption come through but it said that we need to give 48 hours notice so that NOTAM action could be taken.
[10:05] <daveake> Yeah that's very short notice ... last time someone tried that he got told no
[10:05] <daveake> ah ok
[10:05] <daveake> that's different then
[10:06] <Petejhsa> I did that on Monday but haven't heard back
[10:06] <craag> Ah I see, 48h, very nice :)
[10:06] <craag> I'd call them I guess.
[10:06] <daveake> Should be fine .. have you checked to see if the notam is in place?
[10:06] <Petejhsa> No. How do I do that?
[10:06] <daveake> craag: Yeah if he already has the exemption, then the notam is very quick
[10:06] <daveake> I use notaminfo.com
[10:07] <Petejhsa> thanks, I'll check now
[10:07] <daveake> https://notaminfo.com/nationalmap
[10:07] <daveake> Choose the date then zoom in
[10:07] <daveake> Sometimes that page can be slow to get new notams, so the best source is the AIS site but that's more difficult to use
[10:08] <daveake> If you decide to check again (and again ...) till it appears, the updated are every how at 35 minutes, so check after then
[10:08] <daveake> erm sry re english ^
[10:12] <Petejhsa> Great. It's there complete with my phone number.
[10:12] <daveake> Excellent
[10:12] <Petejhsa> Whoever knew helium balloons could be so stressful!
[10:13] <daveake> When you ask for permission/exemption, there's only 1 guy who does those, and he's pretty busy so they can take some time
[10:13] <Petejhsa> We have more than 100 children coming into school at 4:30 am tomorrow for the launch.
[10:13] <daveake> Once that's done, the NOTAM bit is much easier and quicker, and there are several guys who do those
[10:13] <Petejhsa> Is that David Millar? He was really helpful and actually gave us a really long window in the end.
[10:14] <daveake> A few of us have yearly exemptions, and just need to renew that annually and have NOTAMs issued as required, with 72 hours notice
[10:14] <daveake> Yes David Miller the famous "DM" :)
[10:16] <craag> Good luck with the launch Petejhsa!
[10:17] <Petejhsa> Thanks a lot.
[10:24] <fsphil> 100 kids? good luck :)

[16:32] <Bryanstein> Thes LMS60's have a preset range of frequencies that they transmit on according the to dip switches that they have on the bottom correct?
[16:33] <Bryanstein> I'm asking just to make sure that my rtlsdr is calibrated correctly. It has a tcxo in it but it seems to be drifting a bit. I use an rf transmitter plugged directly into the rtlsdr dongle to get my ppm offset
[16:34] <Bryanstein> Even after doing that I get the sonde on frequencies steps above the known frequencies
[16:47] <Ian_> I'm assuming that directly means via a several dB attennuator Bryanstein. Wouldn't want your rtlsdr to drift off to the electronics graveyard in the ether. Or have it shit on a mortal coil . . . :)

[17:39] <Ron_G8FJG> thats good...I was away for a week and missed what was happening..normal service resumed
[17:44] <Ian_> I think that the word persistent was redefined and extended by a few magnitudes. Someone out there had a massive chip on their shoulder with an apparent axe to grind with freenode generally. Nightmare stuff really.

[18:44] <PE2BZ> It takes hours to configure WiFi on a Pi Zero V 1.3 :-(
[18:45] <fsphil> it's just one file to edit?
[18:45] <PE2BZ> Yes and no....
[18:46] <PE2BZ> Till the moment you realise the 1.3 is not WiFi ;-)
[18:46] <fsphil> I've a bunch of usb wifi dongles sitting around just for non-wifi pi's
[18:47] <PE2BZ> That´s a better idea ! I now managed to plug in the USB otg with network adapter, in the pi allready in a housing with camera.... Might try the USB dongle tomorrow to adjust focus ! Thanks :-)
[18:48] <PE2BZ> Now let´s heat up the television ....
[18:51] <SA6BSS-Mike> yes, lets start the TV :) and watch some football!
