[07:16] <Bryanstein> SA6BSS-Mike, I've checked with gqrx but being that there are supposedly two launch windows and quite a few frequencies I figured my best chance at seeing a radiosonde was buy letting auto_rx scan
[07:17] <Bryanstein> Otherwise being that I don't know which frequencies are being used I'd have to hop around a lot which would make me miss the radiosonde if any were out there
[07:18] <SA6BSS-Mike> ok, as thats not working you are back to looking at the 4 freqs around 1680 to confirm you can rx them, I dont know mouch about the around 403mhz launches
[07:19] <SA6BSS-Mike> from the chatter on this channle it seems like they are used alot when and around tornado areas
[07:20] <SA6BSS-Mike> but primerly the ca 1680Mha sondes are used in the US
[07:26] <Bryanstein> I'm in Orlando Florida so I'd figure that radionsondes would be going up quite regularly. We have launches, and several airports close by
[07:27] <Bryanstein> I read something that showed the interest to switch from 1680 to 400Mhz because the band at 1680 ish was being encroached upon.
[07:28] <SA6BSS-Mike> ok, I have to go to work ut good luck!!
[07:28] <Bryanstein> Enjoy your workout. Thanks!

[08:27] <Darkside> Bryanstein: still aboit?
[08:27] <Darkside> about*
[08:28] <Bryanstein> Darkside, yes
[08:30] <Darkside> labjg: wagga wagga only launches monday and wednesday
[08:30] <Darkside> Bryanstein: hi, i'm the author of auto_rx
[08:31] <Darkside> as SA6BSS-Mike says, its probably best to confirm what your local stations are transmitting on by using something like gqrx or SDR# first up
[08:32] <Darkside> i'm really only just beginning to support the 1680 MHz sondes - theres all sorts of challenges involving frequency drift and very wide signal bandwidths
[08:32] <Bryanstein> Darkside, have you seen the material that shows that they are transition off of 1680 sondes in favor of the 400mhz sondes?
[08:32] <Darkside> this all makes automatic detection that much harder - I've got a 1680 MHZ LMS6 on the way from OLHZN which will help me optimize some of the scanning stuff for them, but for now the best bet is to figure out the local frequencies and add them to the whitelist field in the auto_rx config
[08:33] <Darkside> i've heard about it, but i've also heard the timeframe is in the order of years
[08:33] <Darkside> i do know there are some stations in the US that are already on that band - theres an auto_rx station near washington DC which is receiving sondes between 400 and 406 MHz
[08:34] <Bryanstein> Yes I was hoping to use the whitelist as the docs say but near 00z and 12z I hear nothing really. I've got the rtlsdr hooked up to discone antenna.
[08:34] <Darkside> ah ok, that probably wont well, if at all, for the 1680 MHz band
[08:34] <Darkside> what frequency range are you currently scanning on for the 400 MHZ band?
[08:35] <Bryanstein> I flip flop back and forth between 400-406 and 1670-1690. I have a yagi that I plan on using for 1680
[08:35] <Darkside> hmm
[08:35] <Darkside> i'd suggest sitting auto_Rx on 400-406 for a while
[08:36] <Darkside> if you dont get anything after a few days, then either there's no sondes on that band, or they are too weak/far away
[08:36] <Darkside> but definitely worth having a look around with GQRX or similar maybe 30 min after the launch times (usually 11:15Z and 23:15Z) for any signals
[08:37] <Darkside> also you're up really early
[08:37] <SpacenearUS> New vehicle on the map: 03Bacon-2 - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=Bacon-2
[08:38] <Darkside> (or really late... one of the two)
[08:38] <Bryanstein> I'm cursed. Something in my system automatically wakes me at almost 4am every morning. I can't help it :oP
[08:39] <fsphil> wasn't 4am outlawed?
[08:40] <Bryanstein> I've been wanting to track sondes for some time and then I saw your Linuxconf.au talk and it really got me excited
[08:40] <Darkside> heh
[08:40] <Darkside> goad to hear it
[08:40] <Bryanstein> lol @fsphil I guess I'm lawless
[08:40] <Darkside> hopefully we can make something work - i'm really interested in sonde launches out of the space coast of florida
[08:41] <Bryanstein> Thanks for your work on this. I'm literally about 40 minutes from there. I can see launches from my backyard all the time. They shake the house when they're large enough ie Falcon heavy
[08:41] <Darkside> in that case you shoudl definitely get signals from the sondes they launch
[08:42] <Darkside> but yeah, it might take something a bit more than discone, especially if they are on 1680 MHz
[08:42] <Darkside> possibly something like a l-band gridpack antenna, and one of the Nooelec SAWBird filter+preamp units
[08:45] <Bryanstein> I'd really like to contribute to sondehub so I'll get a few nodes out. One on 400mhz and another at 1680 on a parabolic reflector that I have and see what goes
[08:45] <Darkside> cool!
[08:45] <Darkside> im hoping to 'officially' release version 1.1.3 this weekend (if I get time)
[08:46] <Darkside> noting that the 1680 MHZ sonde support is sitll very much preliminary
[08:46] <Darkside> no idea what kind of performance it will have, since i havent optimized any of the receive bandwidth and filtering for it
[08:47] <Bryanstein> Lol, I'm hoping for the best. I'll just keep running git pull periodically on the testing branch. Thanks again for your work and I'll let you guys know how things work out.
[08:53] <Darkside> cheers

[11:04] <Oddstr13> I really should set up a local script to feed my grafana instance
[11:06] <Oddstr13> if only I can figure out why my newest gw code is choking on transmit, I'll have multicast on LAN, so could feed that into my graph (but then I wouldn't notice when ukhasnet api is down, hehe)

[11:15] <mwheeler> oh Darkside do your radiosondes have the green light on after they've landed ? Ours are always off even if they are still TXing (I asumme it's to do with BK), which is likely why vk3zyc left it running

[12:28] <Bryanstein> Are there any wav files available that I can run dft_detect against just to see if it works?
[12:31] <Darkside> hrm
[12:31] <Darkside> i dont really have any...
[12:31] <Darkside> but if it compiles, it should be fine
[12:31] <Darkside> any other issues are more likely to be relatef to frequency offsets or bandwidth problems
[12:31] <Darkside> are you seeing signals in gqrx or similar?
[12:38] <Bryanstein> Yes but it didn't detect it as a sonde. I have to wait another 11 hours now. Is is good to set the rx_timeout lower? I've lowered it to 30 hoping that I'll get more scanning cycles in a given time frame
[12:39] <Darkside> rx_timeout only applies if a sonde is detected
[12:39] <Darkside> i.e. if you are receiving telemetry, and then no telemetry is received for rx_timeout seconds, the decoder is stopped, and scanning restarts
[12:39] <Darkside> next time try and get a screenshot of the signal, i might be able to pick what kind of sonde it is
[12:40] <Darkside> was this on 400 MHZ or 1680?
[12:41] <Bryanstein> Hm , that's not what I thought the timeout was at all :o/ 400
[12:41] <Darkside> hmm
[12:41] <Darkside> did the signal appear to be very strong?
[12:42] <Bryanstein> Yes it seemed and sounded like fsk
[12:42] <Darkside> ok hmm
[12:43] <Darkside> definitely get a screenshot and/or a recording
[12:43] <Darkside> it may be something new
[12:44] <Darkside> was it a continuous signal or in bursts
[12:44] <Bryanstein> Those recordings get written over in auto_rx. If I catch it again I'll try to get an iq recording. It was continuous
[12:45] <Darkside> ok, likel a LMS6 then
[12:45] <Darkside> or maybe a RS92
[12:45] <Darkside> or... somethign entirely different :P
[12:47] <Bryanstein> Hrm wav files get overwritten on successive scans too
[12:47] <Darkside> correct...
[12:47] <Darkside> it was more meant for debugging when running tests
[12:49] <Darkside> if you know the frequency you could try running: python auto_rx.py -f 401.000 or similar
[12:49] <Darkside> that sets a whitelist with that single frequency, so it'll attempt to scan on that frequency over and over
