[14:52] <chris_99> does anyone know how they manage to spread out?
[14:53] <russss> they raise apogee at different times
[14:53] <chris_99> oh so you mean, they're actually at different altitudes? or..
[14:54] <russss> they all start out in one orbit, which isn't the final orbit
[14:54] <russss> then they will each burn to raise into the final orbit, but at different times
[14:55] <chris_99> oh interesting, burn? you mean they actively move to a different location
[14:56] <russss> yeah, they have krypton ion thrusters (so it's arguably not a "burn" as such)
[14:56] <russss> they need them anyway at that altitude to counteract drag, but most satellites have some form of active propulsion
[14:56] <chris_99> sounds fancy, so by apogee, that does mean also they're at different heights from earth then?
[14:57] <russss> they'll all end up at approximately the same height, which is higher than their initial orbit
[14:57] <chris_99> ahh
[14:57] <chris_99> i gotcha now thanks
[14:57] <chris_99> there's no chance of them coliding is there
[14:57] <russss> one hopes not
[14:58] <SpacenearUS> New vehicle on the map: 03JHSA-Chase_chase - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=JHSA-Chase_chase
[14:58] <russss> once they're spread out it's vanishingly unlikely anyway
[14:58] <chris_99> mm
[14:59] <SpacenearUS> New vehicle on the map: 03JHSA-CAR_chase - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=JHSA-CAR_chase
[15:00] <chris_99> i'm kind of curious how much the propulsion can move the sat by, like if if could take the sat, kilometers either way, or if it's only a matter of metres
[15:01] <russss> they've not really released much info about the krypton thrusters - these are the first satellites ever launched with krypton (as opposed to the more common, better performing, but much more expensive xenon)
[15:01] <chris_99> ahh
[15:02] <chris_99> kyrpton is a gas which is propelled via electricity somehow then?
[15:03] <russss> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ion_thruster
[15:03] <russss> they're much more weight-efficient than chemical thrusters but they produce much less thrust
[15:04] <chris_99> interesting, so it's sort of the same principle
[15:04] <chris_99> as those 'floater' things
[15:04] <chris_99> albeit with extra gas etc. heh
[15:07] <chris_99> oops, i mean 'lifter'
[15:10] happysat (~katpoep@s5594c83f.adsl.online.nl) left irc: Remote host closed the connection
[15:15] <chris_99> there's no electric method of propulsion, that uses solar or what not, that doesn't eventually 'run out', like run out of gas etc. though?
[15:15] <russss> there are light sails
[15:16] <chris_99> oh yeah, that's true, they seem really neat
[15:16] <russss> there's also the famous EmDrive which is almost certainly bullshit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RF_resonant_cavity_thruster
[15:17] <chris_99> heh
[15:17] <chris_99> "In May 2018, researchers from the Institute of Aerospace Engineering at Technische Universität Dresden, Germany, concluded that the apparent thrust is clearly an artifact caused by Earth's magnetic field interacting with power cables in the chamber, a result that other experts agree with" i'd not heard that before
[15:21] es5nhc (~es5nhc@96-247-29-85.dyn.estpak.ee) joined #highaltitude.
[15:30] <chris_99> just wondering looking @ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gridded_ion_thruster#/media/File:Electrostatic_ion_thruster-en.svg would it be possible to use two electrodes to move the ions in the chamber? rather than electromagnets
[15:30] happysat (~katpoep@s5594c83f.adsl.online.nl) joined #highaltitude.
[15:37] <russss> in those thrusters I think the magnets are something to do with the ionisation - the actual acceleration is electric there.
[15:38] <chris_99> oh interesting, i thought they where to encourage ions to move
[15:38] YO9GJX (~YO9GJX@109.100.112.75) joined #highaltitude.
[15:41] <chris_99> oh - https://space.stackexchange.com/questions/20616/ion-engine-purpose-of-magnet-rings

The upload to habitat seems ok (the horusbinary.py script says that it was sucessfully uploaded). Does anyone know if there is anything I need to do to get the balloon locaton to be printed on habhub?
