[13:12] <costyn> Hello all. I have a general GPS question. I have a device with passive GPS receiver connected to an anntena which has the active LNA components in it. Will an unpowered LNA attenuate the signal? As I understand it, active GPS is mostly only needed for longer cable runs? My cable length is 125cm between antenna and receiver.
[13:12] <F5MVO> Pe2bz: what antenna do you use in Ben_auto ?
[13:16] <craag> costyn: Yes the unpowered LNA will attenuate the signal, probably too much to work.
[13:17] F5MVO (52e6b25d@gateway/web/freenode/ip.82.230.178.93) left #highaltitude.
[13:17] <craag> And yes an active GPS antenna is only really needed for long cable runs. With 1m + connectors it may help though.
[13:18] <costyn> craag: interesting. I forgot to mention, but in my tests so far it doesn't seem to matter, but I was curious as to the theoretical aspects of this issue.
[13:18] <craag> Oh ok, that's good to hear :)
[13:18] <craag> Depends on the design of the LNA I'd guess.
[13:19] <costyn> Still trying to figure out if this setup is "production ready"
[13:19] <craag> Is this for HAB?
[13:19] <costyn> And the GPS receiver is in a mobile (4G) router which doesn't provide me with all the stats nor raw NMEA to analyse for accuracy
[13:19] <costyn> craag: no it's for a non-HAB project :)
[13:19] <costyn> but since people here know a lot about GPS ;-)
[13:20] <craag> GPS on the ground is all about visible sky (a problem we don't have in HAB, hence the q.)
[13:20] <costyn> Right. Antenna is mounted on the roof of a vehicle
[13:21] <costyn> Sky visibility is good, except in urban canyon situations of course
[13:21] <craag> active patch thing?
[13:21] <costyn> yea
[13:21] YO9GJX (~YO9GJX@109.100.112.75) joined #highaltitude.
[13:22] <craag> I'd still power it if I could, to avoid any awkwardness in the unpowered electronics like the LNA not passing the RF when it gets hot in the sun or something.
[13:23] <craag> But relatively unobstructed on a large metal ground plane is a good place for a passive antenna :)
[13:23] <costyn> Oof that would be unfortunate yea. I guess a bias-t could be added, but not something I'd like to add
[13:23] <craag> what are you using as the receiver?
[13:25] <costyn> craag: It's a Cradlepoint IBR600c router
[13:26] <costyn> not sure what kind of GPS receiver is in there.
[13:27] <craag> oh fancy
[13:27] <craag> are you not using a dual gsm/gps antenna then?
[13:27] <costyn> Yes, triple actually. 4G, wifi and GPS
[13:30] <craag> If this is a hobby project then sounds like you've tested it and it works (without gps power). For anything commercial/volume - I'd be a lot more cautious ;)
[13:30] <costyn> It's commercial yea :-|
[13:31] <costyn> Just trying to do more homework and ask some people with a clue since Google isn't helpin gme
[13:31] <craag> Can you tell me which antenna you're using?
[13:32] <costyn> craag: https://www.2j-antennasusa.com/antenna/2j6050pgf/198
[13:33] <craag> Hmm. I know the manual says it's "passive" but have you checked to see if there's voltage on the router gps antenna port?
[13:34] <costyn> craag: I have not checked no. Wouldn't that be weird, tho, if they secretly supplied 5v on it? :)
[13:35] <craag> engineering not talking to marketing - happens all the time ;)
[13:35] <costyn> Hahahaha
[13:36] <costyn> Allright will check that. So in theory an unpowered LNA/filter should degrade the signal so much as to be unusable
[13:36] <craag> Well, it'll be degrading it somewhat.
[13:36] <craag> Receivers are rather good nowadays so I wouldn't be surprised if it got a fix anyway.
[13:37] <craag> Just might not be a good one, and might go away when things get a little more difficult (eg. urban canyon)
[13:37] <costyn> Right, good point
[13:37] <costyn> craag: thanks so much for your thoughts!
[13:38] <craag> np. It is weird to see a gps antenna socket without power (hence why bias-tees aren't common).
[13:38] <costyn> Right, I'd never seen one either
[13:39] <craag> I far more often have to put in dc-blocks to avoid multiple receivers trying to pwoer each other over the antenna connection :P
[13:39] <costyn> Oops haha :)
[13:39] <costyn> anyways, gonna grab the router from the test vehicle now. I'll let you know how it goes!
[13:39] <craag> :)
