[08:19] <carlhako> Hi All, im from townsville qld attempting at setting up a radiosnode receiver
[08:19] <carlhako> im hoping they launch balloons from here too
[08:20] <TimMc_> spiderbeam pole arrived :D (just in case another ozonesonde gets stuck up a tree or if I give HF a go)
[08:20] <TimMc_> carlhako: hello from Melbourne!
[08:20] <carlhako> Hey Tim
[08:20] <carlhako> think it was your comments on yamma that got me into this lol
[08:20] <daveake> I got mine earlier this week :)
[08:21] <daveake> Not opened it yet but it weighs double that of my other poles, so I'm expecting it to be strong!
[08:22] <TimMc_> (I've been blogging about my radiosonde chases on Yammer at work :-P)
[08:23] <TimMc_> carlhako: Do you have an RTLSDR dongle?
[08:23] <carlhako> yes i thought it was you haha. ive got my rpi scanning as far as i can tell. ill leave it run tomorrow see if it picks anything up. Im using the standard antenna from a sdr i bought years ago. will it pick them up ok inside?
[08:24] <carlhako> pi@raspberrypi:~ $ rtl_test
[08:24] <carlhako> Found 1 device(s):
[08:24] <carlhako> 0: Realtek, RTL2838UHIDIR, SN: 00000001
[08:24] <TimMc_> carlhako: I got a lot of interference when I tried to use a telescopic antenna. It seems better to use a rubber duck handheld antenna tuned for UHF frequencies. Or something like a SignalStuff SignalStick
[08:26] <carlhako> ok so i might need to see what I can find
[08:26] <TimMc_> I've one RPI3 half way up a wall hanging off a nail with an RTLSDR dongle stuck in it. It receives within 25km. The other RPI3 on my coffee table is picking up radiosondes as far as 50km away. It may work inside
[08:26] <carlhako> we have jcar up here they sell antennas afaik
[08:27] <carlhako> the airport is maybe 10-15km away where they would be launching from
[08:28] <TimMc_> A local ham radio club might have a bunch of old gear that they might be happy to part with
[08:30] <carlhako> how can i tell im getting interference? the output im getting from the python script is
[08:30] <carlhako> 2019-03-07 18:13:57,318 INFO:Scanner #0 - Detected peaks on 1 frequencies (MHz): [ 400.91]
[08:30] <carlhako> 2019-03-07 18:14:12,472 INFO:Scanner #0 - Running frequency scan.
[08:30] <carlhako> basically those 2 lines repeated
[08:34] <TimMc_> carlhako: When the script is running, there should be a web server listening on localhost:5000
[08:36] <carlhako> it must only accept local host
[08:36] <carlhako> no gui on my rpi
[08:37] <carlhako> oh no all good im in :)
[08:38] <TimMc_> gqrx.dk/download
[08:38] <TimMc_> Could install gqrx, switch the radiosonde_auto_rx script off, and see what there is around 400 to 406 MHz
[08:40] <carlhako> ive got a chart now
[08:40] <TimMc_> I noticed a lot of harmonics when I powered the RPI3 with an official RPI plugpack. It has less interference when I use a 5V 1.5A belkin charger and a USB cable.
[08:40] FireFighter (~firefight@2601:44:4200:ab4f:742f:d5b5:7621:75be) joined #highaltitude.
[08:40] <carlhako> im not sure if this is bad or not but there is a clear spike over the green line i assume thats the trigger threshold

[08:42] <TimMc_> I'm not too sure how to deal with interference. I've tried three RTLSDR v3 dongles. 1 is bad. 2 are ok. Power pack and USB cable without a ferrite bead causes a bit of interference. Other power pack with a USB cable from a Chromecast (ferrite baad in the cable) works really well.
[08:42] Nick change: BrainDamage_ -> BrainDamage
[08:43] <carlhako> i have it currently near a pile of ac power cords, telstra tv. apple tv. was the handiest place to get ethernet and power lol
[08:43] <carlhako> im using a rpi2 no wifi
[08:43] <carlhako> does that look noisy as hell to you?
[08:45] <carlhako> i work with some radio designers and out of a depo, im sure theres enough stuff around i could make an antenna
[08:47] <TimMc_> My noisy one only picks up within 25km: https://imgur.com/a/77g2Y3f
[08:48] <TimMc_> Here's the one that picks up within 50km: https://imgur.com/a/AdRu4eJ
[08:50] <TimMc_> I'd guess yours would work, especially if you're within 15km of the launch site

[08:52] <TimMc_> carlhako: Are BOM launching raiosondes once a day from Townsville in the morning around 2300 UTC?

[09:15] <carlhako> im not sure what this chart from BOM is telling me
[09:16] <carlhako> does it confirm they do launch? all this radio stuff is new to me.
[09:17] <carlhako> my work building is also just across from the airport I can run it there instead
[09:20] <carlhako> not sure how you got this tracking map yet i have alot to figure out. im guessing this just uses the wind forecasts and its launch position and no actual tracking info? from the links you put on yamma i could not see any trackers up here
[09:21] <Darkside> carlhako: lemme check schedules
[09:21] <Darkside> ok yep townsville is once a day at 00Z
[09:22] <carlhako> does that mean 00UTC ? 10am here im +10
[09:22] <Darkside> yeah
[09:22] <Darkside> they launch 45 min before that
[09:22] <Darkside> so 2315Z
[09:22] <carlhako> ok ill take this to work tomorrow and see if i pick anything up
[09:23] <Darkside> not sure if they will be launching RS92s or RS41s
[09:23] <Darkside> either way, a SDR with a TCXO is a must
[09:24] <carlhako> TCXO ?
[09:24] <Darkside> temp-compensated crystal oscillator
[09:24] <Darkside> if your SDR is old, it probably doesnt have one
[09:24] <carlhako> ok ill find that out
[09:28] <carlhako> its hard to find specifics on the device i have, its fairly small. I will order one of these v3's
[09:28] <Darkside> good idea
[09:30] TheGuv (~yaaic@a85-138-211-60.cpe.netcabo.pt) joined #highaltitude.
[09:34] <daveake> Yeah the TCX0 ones are much nicer ... no need to calibrate as they're very close already, and unlike the others they don't drift all over the place
[09:38] <Darkside> i have some changes in the pipeline that will help with drift
[09:39] <Darkside> but theres some issues with interferer handlign that need to be resolved first
[09:39] <Darkside> i may end up releasing it, but have it enabled via a config option
[09:40] <Darkside> it'll definitely help with the DFMs, which do drift
[09:40] <daveake> DFM ?
[09:40] <Darkside> graw DFM06/DFM09
[09:40] <daveake> righty
[09:42] <Darkside> they drift by maybe 3-4 khz
[09:48] <carlhako> ooo nice updates. this is a very fascinating new hobby I have found :) I shall report if i detect anything tomorrow but i might need to wait till i get the new SDR. thanks all for the help!

[11:12] <carlhako> ive got a project i keep meaning to complete, have a bme280 and esp8266 and ive already designed and 3d printed the mount for it to my mavic 2 pro drone i want to see how much the temp, air pressure and humidity changes i can only take it up 500m tho
[11:13] <Darkside> 500m
[11:13] <Darkside> you mean 120m
[11:14] <Darkside> (unless you have appropriate NOTAMS / licensing etc)
[11:16] <carlhako> yes 120m i mean
[11:17] <Darkside> if the baromter is sensitive enough, you will see a chance
[11:18] <Darkside> change*
[11:18] <Darkside> hell, thats probably how the mavic is sensing altitude delta anyway
[11:18] <Darkside> or would at least be one of the inputs
[11:19] <carlhako> its quite good at holding altitude, with my sensor i do see a diff in reading holding it on the ground and then raising it up about 2m
[11:19] <Darkside> then you will definitely see a change going up to 120m
[11:19] <carlhako> no cooler up that high?
[11:19] <Darkside> maybe a little bit

[23:35] <superkuh> Line numbers assume keenerd's version of rtl-sdr but the code (and bug) is the same in mainline.
[23:37] <superkuh> <Alexer> basically, because the math is in essence done with 8bit integers, the initial dc removal isn't perfect, and when it writes out the csv, at that point it just fills in bin 0 which has the dc component with the neighbouring bin, removing the spike caused by the leftover dc (and there's a comment saying this doesn't work with all windows)
[23:37] <superkuh> <Alexer> (as for why it doesn't work, the window scales the small leftover dc component too, which causes it to leak to neighboring bins, which aren't overwritten when the csv is written)
