[13:26] <Hoshen_4Z7HKA> Hi, PB0AHX on 434.387MHz?
[13:28] <OZ1SKY_Brian> yes
[13:29] <Bozzy> Yes, 434.3875
[13:29] <OZ1SKY_Brian> weak trace here

[13:32] <OZ1SKY_Brian> reds now
[13:34] <OZ1SKY_Brian> first green
[13:36] <PE2BZ> Nice !!
[13:37] <PE2BZ> Bozzy not a trace ?
[13:38] <Bozzy> no, nothing, I need a better antenna :-(
[13:39] <Bozzy> OZ1SKY is doing well to get greens from his location
[13:39] <OZ1SKY_Brian> not all greens, got some qsb on the signal
[13:39] <Bozzy> You did show up on the map as getting it
[13:40] <OZ1SKY_Brian> S0-3 here right now
[13:40] <OZ1SKY_Brian> also some ISM qrm on that freq
[13:41] <Bozzy> What antenna are you using?
[13:41] <mfa298> Bozzy: looks like your only just inside the blue circle so it's only just above your horizon (assuming no hills, etc in the way)
[13:41] <OZ1SKY_Brian> Comet GP9N and a SSB preamp
[13:44] <PE1MJA_Robert> Signal is fluctuating between S1 & S6 here...
[13:48] <dbrooke> Bozzy: it seems a bit weaker than I'd expect, just slightly too weak for good decodes despite it being within range (G6GZH, north of Cambridge)
[13:50] <Bozzy> dbrooke, thanks, what antenna are you using?
[13:50] <dbrooke> Moonraker dual band colinear
[13:51] <Bozzy> Thanks, thinking of asking Santa for a yagi soon
[13:52] <dbrooke> I often decode flights out to the blue line if there's no local interference/noise
[13:55] <mfa298> Bozzy: what sort of setup do you have - and how good a view of the horizon in the general direction of that balloon ?

[13:59] <Bozzy> SDRPlay RSP2, Watson W30 antenna, mounted above roofline, but here in York UK, we are only about 12M above sea level.
[14:00] <mfa298> what coax between the W30 and SDR ?
[14:00] <Bozzy> I do get a lot of interference here though.
[14:03] <Bozzy> RG213U coax
[14:04] bertrik (~bertrik@rockbox/developer/bertrik) joined #highaltitude.
[14:05] <mfa298> that ought to be a reasonalbe setup (assuming a sensible length of coax)
[14:07] <Bozzy> I am keen to buy a good Yagi, but struggling to find a rotor at a sensible price
[14:09] <mfa298> you might be looking for 2nd hand if you want a decent price - radio clubs and radio rallies might be a useful starting point.
[14:11] <mfa298> lna at the antenna might be a useful try as well - although might just amplify the interference as much as the signal
[14:13] <Bozzy> Yes, I do get a lot of "pops" here, so thinking a directional antenna will reduce interference and increase intended signal
[14:14] <g8fjg> PB0AHX just hit 224 kph
[14:15] Action: PE2BZ renames the flight from max altitude to speed_of_light :-)

[17:38] <PE2BZ> espero you mean, it really should fly, but 2000 meter would be enough ?
[17:39] <espero> PE2BZ: yes, it should fly - but I think even just more than line-of-sight would be enough
[17:39] <espero> the scenario I imagine is the children running after it to see the photos logged on it
[17:40] <happysat> sing a tune balloon :)
[17:40] <espero> a nice kit, from my point of view, would include a book that introduced more serious ballooning as well
[17:41] <PE2BZ> photo´s require payload with gps, transmitter. camera, and receivers to receive the image packets. Otherwise you only would have photo´s if you retrieve the payload.
[17:42] <PE2BZ> So you would need a Raspberry Pi Zero, a lora module, a Pi Camera, a (90 cm is enough) balloon, a little parachute and all that before christmas ánd should have to be assembled by a ten year old
[17:42] <espero> PE2BZ: I had in mind a simple camera with an SD card: retrieve the photos by finding the balloon - no transmission
[17:43] <PE2BZ> no transmission is almost certainly no finding the balloon. Where do you live ? In the Netherlands we can attach max 100 m rope to a balloon and pull it down afterwards, is that a possibiity ?
[17:44] <espero> PE2BZ: they live in Norway. I don't know what regulations there are.
[17:46] <PE2BZ> Me neither. But how you want to retrieve a balloon if it does not transmit it´s position ?
[17:47] <PE2BZ> And the number of HAB receivers in Norway is not overwhelming so they should be able to receive their own signal at least. I would say nice idea but not for christmas time this year.
[17:48] <espero> PE2BZ: thank you for your help, and point taken: it sounds like this will need to wait for the future
[17:48] <PE2BZ> I would suggest a Drone for this christmas, with camera ?

[17:58] <espero> PE2BZ: I'd wondered about a drone - but don't know if they already have one. In the end, I've gone for an Arduino starter kit
[18:02] <PE2BZ> I think that´s a nice gift. Can be expanded with GPS, transmitter and could fly in the future :-)
[18:04] <espero> PE2BZ: yes, good point - these days, it's even possible (if improbable) that it could end up on Mars, I suppose.
[18:05] <PE2BZ> Never say never ;=_

[18:20] <Bozzy> Big difference
[18:23] <PE2BZ> I tried an RS41 yesterday, set at 12 mW and 434.3875 no RX over 10 km distance. Then I programmed it for 404.3875 with the same output and it was receivable over 10 km distance. That´s a bit loss in the antenna output filters on the Sonde´s PCB. For battery life I keep it at 12 mW setting, I could set 25 or 50 mW but battery drains much faster then.
[18:32] <SA6BSS-Mike> I ha my brother put one of the old 92:s wx sondes in his window facing my direction, he lives on a hill about 10km from me and I had no problem rx it
[18:35] <Bozzy> Well this one I am tracking has just burst and falling into the North Sea
[18:55] <PE2BZ> What a waste....
[18:55] <PE2BZ> Did you notice a degrade in reception on certain altitude / elevation ?
[18:56] <PE2BZ> Mike the good old 200 mW will do :-)
[19:00] <Bozzy> I lost the signal at 1408m
[19:01] <Bozzy> Looks like in will go in the sea just off the coast of a place called Filey
[19:10] <Bozzy> Do RS41's need heat?
[19:17] <PE2BZ> ¨need heat¨ ? The N series have foam and hard plastic coating, most P series foam only, which keeps the heat from the batteries inside the housing.
[19:17] <PE2BZ> https://x-f.lv/dev/habitat-graphs/payload/PB0AHX#g/altitude,battery,temperature_internal
[19:18] <PE2BZ> If you set the ¨From¨ at 10:50 and then select internal temperature off and on again you see the radiochip temperature from our flight this afternoon
[19:21] <Bozzy> 10:50?
[19:21] <PE2BZ> What date does it start ?
[19:22] <PE2BZ> It does not copy date time to the url. 2018-12-09 10:50 as ¨from¨
[19:24] <Bozzy> Got it now, so internal temperature went down to 10' yes?
[19:25] <PE2BZ> internal radiochip temperature indeed
[19:25] <PE2BZ> You can check the outside temperature for your received RS41 by entering the callsign of that sonde in the same webpage
[19:25] <Bozzy> OK, so combination of good insulation and battery warming up the inside means no need for a heat pack?
[19:27] <PE2BZ> Indeed. We had a Maduino tracker in a foam ¨egg¨ with 28 cm outside diameter, 24 inside, with the ¨error¨ of isolated batteries. That temperature dropped down to -24 in the housing (BME280 sensor)
[19:32] <Bozzy> Found it, sort of RS_P0520359
[19:37] <PE2BZ> short registration
[19:38] <Bozzy> ?
[19:39] <PE2BZ> 5 minutes of data?
[19:40] <PE2BZ> https://tracker.sondehub.org/?sondehub=1#!mt=osm&mz=8&qm=6_hours&f=RS_P0520359&q=RS_*;*chase
[19:44] <Bozzy> I had no idea that there was also a sonde hub, thanks for the link, still learning here
[19:45] <PE2BZ> Most, if not all, RS sondes are now filtered from the tracker.habhub.org
[19:46] <Bozzy> How would I feed into that hub? I have been using RS41 Tracker V1.9?
[19:48] <PE2BZ> I know that auto-rx with Raspberry Pi and SDR (rtl like) is able to upload to the tracker map
[19:49] <PE2BZ> I use RS41 tracker myself but I am not ¨into uploading positions¨ because I want the last fix for myself or pb0ahx if it´s close to our home
[19:54] <PE2BZ> https://github.com/projecthorus/radiosonde_auto_rx/wiki
[19:54] <PE2BZ> Works best with 0 ppm / txco RLT dongles

[21:36] <Darkside> around here we share
[22:14] <Bozzy> I can understand PE2BZ's point, did very well today, and congrats to him.
