[17:08] <spacy> hi all - I have one question regarding a HAB flight which may be a stupid one
[17:09] <spacy> If i send one up with a LoRa module and I have a LoRa gateway on the ground...
[17:09] <spacy> Do I need to "pair" the two somehow? Or does the LoRa gateway receive info from any info from LoRa trackers?
[17:13] OZ7EMA (~emanuel_@151.34.137.143) joined #highaltitude.
[17:14] sumie-dh (~sumie-dh@78.108.102.220) left irc: Ping timeout: 256 seconds
[17:14] sumie-dh (~sumie-dh@78.108.102.220) joined #highaltitude.
[17:14] <Ian_> The setup of the gateway obviously needs to be setup compatibly: frequency and mode. No pairing required. The two devices are free spirits :)
[17:15] <Ian_> It might be good to check for any slight frequency discrepancies between the two so that time is not wasted searching at a critical time, but that shouldn't be a problem.
[17:16] <spacy> Ok. So as long as both have the same frequency and mode set then it will be received?
[17:17] <spacy> Is that the same for RTTY?
[17:18] <Ian_> 1. Yes, but as I say there can be a couple of kHz error between the devices, so check out the gateway so that you are aware of any slight error.
[17:20] <spacy> Cool ok. When setting the frequency, obviously the device is a 434 device. Can I just put anything in that setting that is close to 434?
[17:21] <Ian_> 2. RTTY is the same, but tuning tends to be more critical. DL_FLDIGI has a number of settings for you to get right. Not something to think about on the day. Get that mentally sorted in pre-flight test phase.
[17:22] <spacy> I am not planning on tracking with RTTY, just with LoRa. But the tracker will have a RTTY module so I can hopefully announce on here and have a few others chip in with the tracking.
[17:23] <Ian_> Normally 25kHz channel spacing, BUTPE2BZ and fiends in NL are great contributors to the listening. They suffer from QRM (interference) from commercial crane communications on the 25kHz channels and respectfully request that you use 12.5kHz channelization between the noise . . .
[17:24] <Ian_> Always consider the distributed listener network. When all goes sub-optimal or farther and faster than you anticipate, they are your safety net.
[17:24] <Ian_> Makes sense?

[17:34] <spacy> I think that all makes sense.
[17:34] <spacy> When you say "Always consider the distributed listener network" do you mean just inform everyone on here and check they can get a signal before launch?

[17:40] <mfa298> for the distributed listener network (mostly people who're in here) then you need to tell them about the flight well in advance including details of what radio settings your using.
[17:40] <mfa298> one good way to do that is an email to the group mailing list
[17:41] <mfa298> https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/ukhas
[17:41] <mfa298> See the recent couple of posts for good examples.
[17:42] orbyt_ (~orbyt@204.14.152.19) joined #highaltitude.
[17:42] <mfa298> Don't forget you also need clearance from the relevant airspace bodies (CAA in the UK) and an active flight document for the tracker (which implies a working and tested payload)
[17:44] <mfa298> most of the tracking network won't be able to receive your payload when it's on the ground so you need to test it well before letting go. Its hard to fix your tracker once you've let go of the rope.
[17:53] Nick change: en4rab_ -> en4rab
[17:54] <spacy> Great thanks for the help.
[17:55] <spacy> We are well off from launching so not contacted CAA yet, but will do in due time.
[17:55] <spacy> Any tips on choosing a launch site? Is there guidelines or is it ok as long as it is not near an airport, reasonably clear and the landing site is in a rural area?

[18:18] <daveake> It does; it's all in the readme https://github.com/PiInTheSky/lora-gateway
[18:18] <Ian_> What I actually meant about considering the distributed receiver network was: You have indicated that you are looking to launch an essentially LoRa tracker, but seem to indicate that it can do RTTY too, but you aren't equipped for that.

[19:53] <mfa298> vaizki: you could probably improve the SNR with a simple bandstop filter /ignore SpacenearUS!*@*
[19:55] kristianpaul (~kristianp@unaffiliated/kristianpaul) left irc: Quit: Lost terminal
[19:55] <vaizki> best of all would be a selective leave/join filter.. if someone has not said anything on the channel for 6 hours, don't show the leave message. if the leave message was suppressed, don't show the join.
[19:59] <daveake> You could try irccloud, which collates those onto one summary line
[20:05] <Ian_> You can suppress /JOINS/PARTS/QUITS in the Qwebirc options if you come in via habhub.org
[20:07] Bob_ZL1RS (~Bob@74.240.224.49.dyn.cust.vf.net.nz) joined #highaltitude.
[20:09] <mfa298> you can also ignore them all in irssi with a simple ignore (I do that in many channels I join)
[20:10] <Ian_> I'm an IRC babe :) (don't take that the wrong way, not as attractive as it might at first sound)
[20:12] <vaizki> daveake: I am showing my age, being wary of such cloud fluff .. :)
[20:13] <daveake> heh :). It is quite nice.
[20:13] <vaizki> I run ZNC on my own "cloud".. and it's quite nice too...
[20:13] <vaizki> but I can't filter out joins/leaves or the channel user list in clients will not be in sync
[20:14] <vaizki> and I have clients open in 5 different computers + use ipad and phone

[20:19] <vaizki> but your endorsement is not going unnoticed, I shall give it an unbiased and fair chance lat.. HA! NEVER!
[20:21] <mfa298> I've hard good things about irccloud from a few places, but so far screen+irssi works well
[20:23] <vaizki> I used screen and ircII, later irssi for 20 years but mobile devices and ssh just didn't make it so I went to ZNC and whatever native clients were available on each OS
