[09:47] <vaizki> New dataset: Atmospheric sounding "weather balloon" observations from Jokioinen Ilmala and Sodankylä Tähtelä stations since 2014. There are also older observations available from Jyväskylä lentoasema station between 2014 and 2016.
[09:49] <Darkside> cool
[09:49] <Darkside> all of ours are available to
[09:50] <vaizki> in Finland this thinking that data produced by publicly funded research should also be public (open) is not that old.. :)

[10:22] <PE2BZ> Darkside that´s quick :-)
[10:22] <Darkside> well its a good point
[10:22] <Darkside> and a fairly easy fix
[10:24] <PE2BZ> In about one hour the next RS41 from the Bilt goes up, I will run the rtl_tcp on the dongle and Beaglebone I run the Auto_rx on and see how the reception is. 400 MHz centered bandpass and 21 dB preamp did work in the past so should still work...
[10:24] <PE2BZ> So afk for shopping now.
[10:24] <Darkside> k
[10:24] <Darkside> hrm beaglebone eh
[10:24] <Darkside> havent tried anything on that
[10:25] <PE2BZ> That one had an SD card with rtl-sdr so it was a quick change between the Pi and the Beagle
[10:26] <PE2BZ> Used that for the waterfall like http://www.pe2bz.nl/hamradio/skymonitor/rtlTest_power.png

[14:11] <Babs_> when we were talking about the si4060 the other day, you mentioned using a tcxo as a potential solution

[14:11] <Babs_> one like this? https://www.adafruit.com/product/2045
[14:14] <fsphil> you'd be looking for a VCXO Oscillator
[14:15] <fsphil> something like this maybe: https://www.mouser.co.uk/ProductDetail/Epson/TG2016SBN-300000M-MCGNEM3/?qs=OycAS1CGnlgmhEuu02NKHg%3d%3d

[14:16] <fsphil> disclaimer: I've not used one in this way
[14:16] <Babs_> Sorry, I think thats what I meant (damn acronyms)
[14:18] <Babs_> And the aim would be to use that to drive the gpio pin of the si4060?
[14:19] <fsphil> no
[14:19] <fsphil> with that you'd just setup the si chip to transmit a plain carrier
[14:19] <fsphil> you'd modulate that by controlling the vcxo's frequency
[14:19] <Babs_> I can see how the vcxo can be used to generate a signal of a certain frequency , but unclear how you then morph that signal into an RF signal that transmits
[14:20] <fsphil> the vcxo has an input that lets you vary it's output slightly
[14:20] <fsphil> basically fm modulation
[14:21] <fsphil> the si chip's output will also be modulated as it's using the vcxo to generate its output signal
[14:22] <Babs_> Do you basically get the vcxo to get to the required frequency (eg. 144Mhz) and then use the input pin to kick out the two tones?
[14:22] <fsphil> the vcxo replaces the crystal driving the si chip (30 mhz I think?)
[14:22] <Babs_> 30mhz is correct
[14:23] <Babs_> Can you draw me a
[14:23] <fsphil> the SI uses that clock to generate its output RF
[14:23] <fsphil> so any variation in the clock reference will appear on the output
[14:23] <Babs_> picture? Im confused now
[14:23] <Babs_> Which si? The 4060? (Borh
[14:23] <Babs_> both chips are silabs
[14:24] <Babs_> Ahhh, I think I get it now

[14:25] <fsphil> yeah
[14:25] <fsphil> the SI just becomes a fancy RF signal generator
[14:25] <fsphil> you set it up and forget about it
[14:26] <fsphil> I'm fairly sure this is how the ntx2b's work
[14:27] <dbrooke> the PLL bandwidth in the SI will affect how quickly you can change frequency but I don't know if that matters for this application
[14:27] <Babs_> Presumably you turn the 4060 on, set it and forget it, send your signal then turn it back off to avoid annoying everyone on the same frequency in the meantime?
[14:28] <fsphil> yeah it'll just be audio frequencies
[14:28] <fsphil> hah, yeah
[14:28] <fsphil> and they'd soon let you know if you didn't
[14:29] <Babs_> And as you have the 4060 doing the carrier signal, you dont need to bother about making a sine wave or anything with the vcxo
[14:30] <fsphil> you'd feed the aprs audio tones into the vcxo
[14:32] <fsphil> (at appropriate levels of course)
[14:35] <Babs_> So youd set the vcxo at 30mhz, then feed in 1200 and 2200 audio tones?
[14:35] <Babs_> does that Adafruit board look as if it would do the trick? It would be useful to get something that is already breadboarded up

[14:40] <fsphil> the vcxo will be fixed at a frequency, so you'd buy a 30mhz one
[14:41] <fsphil> the vc part lets you vary it some amount from that
[14:41] <fsphil> I'm honestly not sure. it depends how clean the output is
[14:42] <Babs_> So the Adafruit one is a bit of overkill then as it operates across a massive spectrum
[14:42] <daveake> Sorry for spamming the logtail ... forgot I had another gateway running :/
[14:43] <fsphil> yeah, you'd only ever be running it at 30mhz

[18:29] <jacob21> So I'm following the 'Linking an Arduino to a Radiometrix NTX2B Transmitter' tutorial from UKHAS, but can't get an alternating signal. I'm using an RTL2832U SDR dongle, sdr sharp, virtual audio cable, and dl-fldigi. Using the code provided in step 4, when I set the delay to anything greater than 120, I can a single signal, but anything below 120 I get no signal at all. Any suggestions at what I am doing wrong?
