[20:18] <caleb_> hello. I'm looking into pico balloons for an attempted circumnavigation and have a few questions on balloon types.
[20:18] <caleb_> 1. It seem like most people use one or two 36" qualatex mylar balloons. Is there a reason that the Qualatex balloons are preferred over other mylar balloons?
[20:18] <SpeedEvil> I suspect it's just very few brands have been tried, and that one seems to work rather than a deep decision
[20:22] <caleb_> 2. Is there a reason why people typically launch with 1-2 balloons rather than a larger number like 5 for redundancy? My best guess is that helium leaks at a fairly constant rate from balloons. If you're trying to produce 2g of net lift, then having more balloons would just put you closer to the threshold if more balloons are leaking at the same time. (not sure if this explanation or theory makes sense)
[20:25] <Geoff-G8DHE-M> I thought the circumnavigating ballons were all custom made ones ?
[20:26] <Ian_> I suspect that more than one envelope is likely to quickly take you out of the Pico category where 'the complete system shall remain within a 2m sphere', to qualify as NOTAM free.
[20:27] <Ian_> More than one envelope also adds more complications, such as extra envelope weight, chafing etc. and what Geoff said ^^
[20:28] <Ian_> Often it is not a circumnavigation launch, but a developmental series of launches to achieve the desired goal.
[20:29] <Geoff-G8DHE-M> http://leobodnar.com/balloons/
[20:30] <Ian_> Now there was a series :)
[20:32] <Geoff-G8DHE-M> http://www.bristol-seds.co.uk/flights.html
[20:33] <vaizki> 2 balloons with total volume = lift X will definitely have a lot more surface area = mylar = weight than a single balloon..
[20:34] <Ian_> Shorter series, reaching the goal in relatively few flights, still going strong . . .
[20:34] <vaizki> don't watch Up! too many times...
[20:34] <SpeedEvil> vaizki: weeel
[20:34] <SpeedEvil> vaizki: larger balloon needs thicker mylar to do superpressure, so it's not quite that simple
[20:34] <vaizki> sure but if you buy ready made they are probably all the same thickness
[20:35] <SpeedEvil> true
[20:35] <vaizki> party balloons
[20:35] <vaizki> and hmm well not sure if you actually need thicker mylar?
[20:35] <vaizki> it's the same amount of superpressure whether it's big or small?
[20:37] <vaizki> my math escapes me, stomach flu is taking up all my physics capacity..
[20:37] <SpeedEvil> The hoop stress in order to keep in an amount of pressure is the same as long as the relative thickness of the skin to diameter is the same
[20:37] <Ian_> maths !
[20:37] <vaizki> it's like magic but harder to pronounce the spells

[20:38] <vaizki> today I learned a new english "word", hoop stress
[20:41] <Ian_> Hoopy doop. More a concept than a word I guess. I am in awe of your linguistic abilities. I kid you not.
[20:42] <Ian_> <envy>
[20:42] <vaizki> you like linguini? I don't get it
[20:44] <Ian_> No, I frightened by cunilinguini . . .
[20:44] <Ian_> I am
[20:50] <vaizki> I have developed my english skills mostly by living in the U.S. of A and reading Wodehouse as a kid ;)
[20:52] <vaizki> and to boot, all the professional literature, customer communications and even internal company talk and emails has been mostly english for the last 20 years
[20:53] <vaizki> my younger kid is 6 and he is conversational in english already.. 17 yo teenager is fluent already due to the Internet

[20:53] <Ian_> That explains the math v maths. My Grandson figured that YouTube vids got a lot more hits in English rather than Spanish.

[20:55] <Ian_> Noticed years ago that Germany 'synchronised' all the US movies. Netherlands, with a smaller viewer base didn't, so a lot of English speakers in the Netherlands, with american accents.
[20:56] <vaizki> I kind of suck at swedish, german and spanish.. zero french and no passion in getting any.. italian and chinese are a bit on my list :)
[20:57] <vaizki> mostly because my mom lives in italy for 4-5 months of the year and I feel like an idiot in china

[20:59] <Ian_> More so in China than Italy I would imagine.

[23:22] <fsphil> detecting one here but not decoding yet

[23:25] <fsphil> I'm recording the output of rtl_fm this time, if you need it for testing
[23:26] <Darkside> yeah if you could upload a sample that'd be good
[23:30] <fsphil> https://www.sanslogic.co.uk/castor_bay_20171228.zip
[23:30] <fsphil> sounds a bit weak
[23:30] <fsphil> this is with a diamond x-50 straight into an rtlsdr
[23:32] <fsphil> it's detecting it as an RS41 quite consitantly
[23:32] <Darkside> detection of the preamp is by correlation i think
[23:33] <Darkside> preamble*
[23:33] <fsphil> ahh yeah that'd be reliable

[23:33] <fsphil> I'm not sure why it works later in the flight
[23:33] <fsphil> unless the sonde goes to a higher power mode
[23:34] <Darkside> hmm so theres a bit of a DC offset there
[23:35] <fsphil> will the demod handle that?
[23:36] <Darkside> not very well
[23:36] <Darkside> ok so thats interesting
[23:36] <Darkside> yep as soon as i add a highpass 20 option to the sox string, it decodes perfectly
[23:36] <Darkside> at sonde_2017-12-28_232120.wav | sox -t raw -r 15k -e s -b 16 -c 1 - -r 48000 -b 8 -t wav - lowpass 2600 highpass 20 2>/dev/null | ./rs41ecc
[23:36] <fsphil> lemme try
[23:37] <Darkside> i was a bit unsure about removing that
[23:37] <Darkside> if you're spot-on frequency it isnt an issue
[23:37] <Darkside> but i suspect you're off-frequency by a few khz
[23:37] <fsphil> rerunning
[23:37] <fsphil> probably the ppm
[23:37] <fsphil> error
[23:37] <Darkside> yeah
[23:37] <fsphil> it's somewhat variable
[23:37] <Darkside> i do mention in the documentation that the PPM needs to be set fairly well
[23:38] <Darkside> the demod is using pretty basic data slicing, i.e. if value > 127, it's a 1, if value < 127, it's a 0
[23:38] <Darkside> so it is very sensitive to DC offsets
[23:38] <Darkside> and i'm not 100% sure what the highpass 20 option has on receive performance
[23:39] <fsphil> it's not detecting it at all now
[23:39] <Darkside> wait, where did you add the highpass 20 bit
[23:39] <fsphil> the rs41 bit :)
[23:39] <Darkside> line 583 ?
[23:39] <Darkside> ok
[23:40] <fsphil> 583 yeah
[23:40] <Darkside> ok
[23:41] <Darkside> im still trying to figure out a decent set setup to handle these kind of impairments
[23:42] <Darkside> test setup*
[23:42] <fsphil> hmm nothing
[23:42] <Darkside> but yeah, i think using a 'stable' rtlsdr and setting the ppm right is an important part of this
[23:43] <Darkside> the other side of it is using a demod which is less dependent on frequency stabilitt
[23:43] <Darkside> i.e. using something like david rowe's fsk demod, which takes in SSB demodulated data
[23:45] <fsphil> you'd need something better than rtl_fm for that
[23:45] <Darkside> yup
[23:45] <Darkside> and it will use more CPU
[23:45] <fsphil> I wonder if I can grab an IQ dump of this while it's in the air
[23:45] <fsphil> get a proper look at it
[23:51] <fsphil> rtl_tcp > gqrz
[23:51] <fsphil> x*
[23:51] <fsphil> it does look very weak
