[08:14] <LA2K17> The launch from Lockerbie Academy planned for today has been postponed until Thurs 22nd around 09:00 UTC.
[08:14] <LA2K17> As before we'd be very grateful for any assistance with tracking. It's expected to travel east from Lockerbie landing in Northumberland.
[08:15] <LA2K17> 434.35 MHz USB, RTTY 300 baud 8N2 730 shift.
[08:16] <fsphil> I'll have a station running. though I'm a bit far so I won't be much help for when it's landing

[08:20] <LA2K17> Thanks. We've 2 separate receivers in the car so as long as we can get across country in time to be somewhere near the landing area we should pick it up.
[08:20] <LA2K17> Whether we can then find it is another matter!

[09:42] <gonzo_> LA2K17, there are not too many stations in range of your flight. But to get the max chance of having them online, come in here and keep us updated of the status of the flight (eg, estimated time to launch, released etc) as some people run their stations remotly and may be busy at work, so any clues you can give, wiill help
[09:42] <gonzo_> ohhh, that was a long sentecne....
[09:43] <fsphil> think it failed the CRC too
[09:46] <gonzo_> line noise
[09:47] <LA2K17> Thought that might be the case. There will be a 16 y.o. student on here as LA2K17 Base and I hope he'll keep you updated. He's operating the receiver in school.
[09:48] <LA2K17> We'll try to keep on here in the car but mobile signal let alone data could be a challenge in the predicted landing area.
[09:49] <daey> LA2K17: what is the payload?
[09:49] <gonzo_> take some printed maps that have lat-lon poin them

[09:51] <gonzo_> updating IRC, as long as people know when they need to listen, with as much notice as poissible. Once it's in the air, that is good enough

[22:35] <AetherRob> Hi, I just wanted to discuss detals of how to set up and test ukhas tracking for our balloon flight (date yet to be set but likely 26/27 or 28th of this month).
[22:36] <AetherRob> We've already got SOME payload documentation on the "habitat" system, including a generated payload, but I wanted to check through all the steps that must be performed to get thibgs ready. We can't yet progress through all the steps, so I hoped I could get a "look ahead" at what tasks we need to be able to accomplish later to get our whole documentation and protocol ready for others to receive. Thanks

[22:53] <Ian_> I am assuming that you have got the CAA stuff in order, have given them 28 working days notice and are sitting back awaiting permisson and a NOTAM.
[22:55] <AetherRob> That's all been sorted
[22:55] <AetherRob> so yes, we'lle be giving them (and minutes thereafter anyone who can help us track) notice of the exact date 72hrs before launch
[22:55] <Ian_> If your payload document is generated, then you can run a test to ensure that it is received and passed to the Habitat tracking database for display by either dl_fldigi or a LoRa Gateway
[22:56] <AetherRob> Can you explain the key features of doing that, or provide links to further info
[22:57] <Ian_> If it doesn't come up here with a New Vehicle on the map message or appear on the tracker map, then you should be looking at the parser logtail for errors.
[22:57] <AetherRob> I don't have the transmitter or a receiver to hand right now, I'm part of a team and right now various parts are with various members
[22:57] <AetherRob> We did manage to get it in the parser logtail and onto the map once during testing, on about the 9th of the month 16:50 ish I think was the time
[22:58] <AetherRob> I'm primarily asking here about what we need do to for ukhas once the date has been selected, do you need us to give you other test transmissions, also how is it done with "using the irc chat to get your payload/flight docs approved"
[23:01] <Ian_> OK, your next move is to get the parts together to do that testing. It needs to be fairly recent to convince the Admins on #habhub. There is nothing like approving a flight document based on an out of date package document and then having to mess around to fix things.
[23:02] <AetherRob> What admins, how do we contact them when we need to? can we do that testing tomorrow (before we've actually selected the flight date) and get the admins to approve it then?
[23:03] <AetherRob> Am I right in thinking that we can use the full habhub tracking map and such ourselves but until the admins approve no-one but our own receiver will be tracking our signal?
[23:03] <AetherRob> Our transmission system hasn't changed at all since our June 9th test, and it got onto the map then
[23:04] <Ian_> Talk about the flight here. Go here https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/ukhas and give details of your flight. Callsign, frequency, mode (RTTY) Baud speed, frequency shift in use, data bits, parity or NOT and number of stop bits. For LoRa the mode etc.
[23:05] <Ian_> You are right, your package testing will show up publicly and the flight doc approval will enqueue details for the calendar, which is subject to the update caprice of Google.
[23:05] <AetherRob> Start a new topic on the google group?
[23:06] <Ian_> Best testing late in the day or evening when there is little in the way of live traffic hitting the logtail. It might save your sanity catching your signal among many otherwise.
[23:07] bertrik (~bertrik@rockbox/developer/bertrik) left irc: Ping timeout: 260 seconds
[23:07] Laurenceb__ (~laurence@host86-130-23-9.range86-130.btcentralplus.com) joined #highaltitude.
[23:08] <AetherRob> thanks for that tip
[23:09] <Ian_> We all believe that your package is working and totally unchanged since June 9th. But that being the case, it will be easily proven. So many Oh yeah, well we changed the callsign or something else trivial occurrences. If you are well established then no problem, but if you are relatively new, then that extra test inspires confidence and saves time eventually.
[23:09] <AetherRob> We've only flown one balloon before, and it used a different tracking method, so no we're not established and we could use all the practice we can find time for
[23:09] <Ian_> Yes a new topic, with a wholly meaninful title on the Google group mailing list.
[23:11] <AetherRob> A title like "Project AETHER, Callsign UolAETHER, please approve to track"?
[23:12] <Ian_> Someone on the IRC channel on the day with a blow by blow account also generates interest. We are all watching and occasionally with 3G connection from a chase car to the IRC channel you can get the local farmer's phone number to ask if you can go into his field of bulls to get your red parachute back . . .
[23:13] <Ian_> Title like Project AETHER launch, Callsign date and time. The rest can go into the body of the message.
[23:14] <AetherRob> I'm not sure what we'll with us on the day in terms of connectivity to give a live feed of our hunt for the payload, not sure if we'll be able to give live updates from the landing site
[23:15] <AetherRob> hopefully without bulls
[23:15] <Ian_> For approval, "/join #habhub" and ask there for the appropriate flight doc to be approved. Depending on the time of day etc. an Admin might spring out of the woodwork or may arrive after some time.
[23:15] <AetherRob> As we don't have a date yet can we simply say in the message body of the post that the launch is on the 26th,27th or 28th but it will be a while before the date is set
[23:16] <AetherRob> Or will admins not approve until the exact date is set?
[23:16] <Ian_> By putting in the flight doc number again it will show you if it has been approved or not.
[23:16] <AetherRob> Sorry, #habhub, is that twitter or what?
[23:16] <AetherRob> Where do we find a flight doc number?
[23:16] <Ian_> type /j #habhub just now
[23:17] <AetherRob> Oh, ok I see it takes me to another irc channel
[23:17] <AetherRob> What is the habhub channel for that this one isn't?
[23:17] <Ian_> It's a low volume Admin channel where such things as approval requests is less likely to get lost in the noise
[23:18] <SpacenearUS> New position from 03YPADSONDE after 0310 hours silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=YPADSONDE
[23:18] <AetherRob> Thanks for the explanation
[23:18] <Ian_> That and the admins talk about things that may go wrong or need working on re the infrastructure from time to time.
[23:19] <Ian_> On the Google groups you can put the range of launch dates and then refine it with a follow up to the topic which will also bubble it to the top of the list.
[23:21] <AetherRob> So once we set up a google groupd post, and a mention on the habhub quiet channel, what ests might the admins ask us to perform before we can be approved? Will they just want to see that a standard telemetry string can be sent by our transmitter and picked up by our receiver, or might they want more?
[23:23] <Ian_> The flight doc number (top right or top left when you generate it - spot the new guy here too?) entered on #habhub will display a few lines of details, including the tested or untested status. If it comes up as untested or the Admin thinks that the testing may have been some time ago he will ask for further testing, otherwise he will approve it.
[23:24] <AetherRob> By testing does that just mean send and receive testing, or is it something more?
[23:26] <Ian_> It looks like there are four flights for tomorrow awaiting approval since late this afternoon. It's generally been a hot day so someone hasn't been as fast as they normally are.
[23:26] LazyLeopard (~irc-clien@88.97.98.120) left irc: Quit: Now QRT
[23:27] <Ian_> Just sending from the package, no flight doc needed at that stage, but the package doc tested should go into the subsequent flight doc for approval.
[23:28] <AetherRob> so the flight doc contains what further info than the package doc, from a look at the page it seems just to have date and time info for the exact launch, is there anything mroe to it than that?
[23:29] <Ian_> You receive locally with dl_fldigi or Lora as appropriate, with the data going to the Habitat database, via the logtail and hopefully appearing on the map. Job done. Stick it into a flight doc and ask for approval. Keep a not of the relevant numbers or at least the last four or six characters (shorthand) Job done and ready to fly
[23:29] <AetherRob> Ok thanks, any other tracking related tips I should know to help set this up?
[23:32] <Ian_> Not that I can think of of fhand. A browse through the how to lose your package document might jog your memory. Make sure that you pull all the elements together and check, check, check before you let things go. Ultimate Lithium batteries only, good to -40 degrees. Alkalines will fail you when you need them most.
[23:40] <Ian_> The only other thing is to ensure that post flight you advise recovery of your package and thank the listeners here and on the Google groups. It will make people feel good for helping and ensure that you get a PR tick or gold star.
