[10:42] <SnkMtn> Good morning. Question about the android application HAB Tracker
[10:43] <craag> Ask your questions :)
[10:43] <SnkMtn> RTTY 50 and 300. 7N2, 8N1, or 5N1.5?
[10:44] <craag> Hmm, very likely won't do baudot. Very likely will do 7n2. Unsure on 8N1.
[10:45] <SnkMtn> So it is designed to recognize 7n2. Excellent!
[10:46] <SnkMtn> Im using an rf69 which limits me to carrier shifts of 61 hz. That could be my issue.
[10:47] <craag> what parameters are you trying to send?
[10:47] <craag> the app is very tolerant of weird shifts
[10:47] <SnkMtn> I'm at work and don't want to disturb my co workers so will have to test again at home.
[10:48] <craag> Jump on here when you're testing, with an audio recording sample if you can, and you'll likely find someone to help you out

[10:49] <SnkMtn> Will do. I see you folk are using solar cells to charge lipo.
[10:50] <craag> Some do for the float flights yes
[10:50] <SnkMtn> I hope to send one your way this summer.
[10:50] <SnkMtn> across the atlantic
[10:50] <craag> :D
[10:51] <SnkMtn> I take it latex would hold He for the trip?????
[10:51] <SnkMtn> Pico balloon
[10:52] <fsphil> I think there's only been three transatlantic flights with a latex balloon
[10:52] <SnkMtn> So foil it is.
[10:52] <craag> leakage isn't the problem I believe
[10:52] <craag> degradation of the latex in the sun is
[10:52] <SnkMtn> Do you have a charging circuit example? Solar -> lipo?
[10:52] <craag> and other stuff that other people on here know far better than me
[10:54] <craag> 5V solar -> lipo is easy
[10:54] <craag> if you're using smaller panels than that then you need to find a step-up charger
[10:54] <craag> I don't have any examples myself
[10:54] <SnkMtn> I can google and roll my own.
[10:55] <craag> Yeah you'll likely want to do that :)
[11:01] <SnkMtn> I use sprintf to build my telemetry string. It seems to hold up well with stationary testing. I wonder if it will break, Lat and Lon when moving. Oh well only testing will tell.
[11:02] <SnkMtn> I did learn a valuable trick, to hold the power setting on the rf69 low until I the GPS locks onto at least three satellites.
[11:03] <craag> remember that, hopefully, you'll have the prime meridian to deal with too ;)
[11:03] <SnkMtn> yep! O.o
[11:05] <craag> see https://ukhas.org.uk/guides:common_coding_errors_payload_testing
[11:06] <SnkMtn> Where in the wide wide world of sports, do you find out the transmitting frequency of current flights. All I see is a reference to APRS, which is easy enough.
[11:06] <adamgreig> .flights

[11:07] <adamgreig> (you can also see it on the right hand side on the tracker)
[11:08] <SnkMtn> Done! Very nice.
[11:11] <SnkMtn> The first calendar event I click on, OLHZN-5, 144.39MHz USB RTTY 100 baud 170Hz shift ASCII-7 no parity 2 stop bits. RTTY on the APRS frequency? O.O
[11:11] <craag> your aprs frequency, not ours ;)
[11:12] <SnkMtn> ;)
[11:12] <SpacenearUS> New position from 03UBSEDS21 after 0311 hours silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=UBSEDS21
[11:13] <SnkMtn> I have two of the radiometrix transmitters, one for APRS testing on 144.390, the other 433 MHz for rtty.
[11:14] <craag> in the UK we use 433 for rtty as it's license-exempt up to 10mW
[11:14] <craag> (and we aren't permitted to use AR airborne)
[11:14] <SnkMtn> I was thinking of using my ham call sign on a 33m rf69@915 MHz, but then I would be illegal once I cross your air space, ...unless I tweaked it during the hypothetical journey to 868.
[11:15] <craag> frequency agility is in fashion :)
[11:16] <SnkMtn> ...oh and then it would breach diplomatic norms. I'll stay on 433 and 10mW.

[19:19] <Vance_UTC> Hi folks. I have a question for you...
[19:20] <Vance_UTC> We are about to fly a Raspberry Pi Model A, with a LORA, and RTTY radios, but we have also added a Sense Hat, an additional temperature sensor and an MCP3008 ADC and UV sensor
[19:21] <Vance_UTC> What is your view on battery power? Should we double up on the batteries?
[19:22] <fsphil> measure and experiment. you can't beat just trying it
[19:22] <Upu> what fsphil said
[19:22] <Upu> stick some fresh energizers in
[19:22] <Upu> and test it
[19:23] <Vance_UTC> Yes, was thinking we could run it in a freezer and try to ensure it lasts for at least 3 hours
[19:23] <Upu> you want more than 3 hours
[19:23] <Upu> 6 min
[19:23] <SA6BSS-Mike> :) 6 hours
[19:23] <Vance_UTC> Yes, just worked that out :-)
[19:23] <fsphil> yeah, give yourself time to hunt about for a few hours trying to find it
[19:24] <Upu> sorry 6 minimum :)
[19:24] <Upu> must be cleared advise could be misinterpreted :)
[19:24] <Vance_UTC> That was my fallback, but wanted to see whether anyone had flown anything similar and had any advice
[19:25] <Upu> Probably dave
[19:25] <Upu> but he's not here atm
[19:25] <Upu> I don't actually think that lot will increase the power consumption to any significant degree
[19:25] <Upu> but test test
[19:25] <Vance_UTC> OK, I may try him tomorrow, but thanks anyway
[19:25] <Upu> and then throw it down the stairs and test more

[20:32] <RPF-JR> Hi all, what's the margin of error on the landing predictor, (assuming launch goes to plan)?
[20:33] <RPF-JR> I have this prediction for Thursday http://imgur.com/a/aH3gl
[20:33] <RPF-JR> with about 20 miles of land left before the sea...
[20:33] Hiena (~boreger@81.93.195.181.datatrans.hu) left irc: Quit: Konversation terminated!
[20:35] <mfa298> that prediction will potentially change as the wind data gets close to the time
[20:42] VK5MCA (~VK5MCA@220-253-42-67.dyn.iinet.net.au) left irc: Read error: Connection reset by peer
[20:44] <RPF-JR> Yeah I know the prediction will change a bit, Wednesday was looking lovely until yesterday
[20:45] <RPF-JR> If that was the last prediction we had before launch how accurate would it be, would people here launch with that prediction
[20:46] <mfa298> it might be worth trying some other predictions with different ascent/descent rates and burst altitude and see how it varies
[21:02] <RPF-JR> yeah not making much difference. how frequenctly does the data for cusf get updated is it every 6 hours or something?
[21:04] <mfa298> should be every 6 hours.
[21:05] <mfa298> the point of differing values on those is they'll give some idea of what happens if the balloon fill isn't quite right, and cover balloon variations.
[21:08] <mfa298> If you were finding it gets closer to the sea with slightly different ascent/descent rates or differnt burst altitudes then that might be a bad sign.
[21:09] <mfa298> really needs someoen else to comment on whether they'de fly with that prediction, I don't have enough experience to make that call.
[21:09] <RPF-JR> ok, so a fairly consistent landing prediction with varying values is a good sign
[21:10] <RPF-JR> just wish it wasn't heading to norwich, not ideal. Fingers crossed
[21:10] <Ian_> The other thing is that as you approach a launch, the certainty of a decision to go or no-go becomes clearer. If at the eleventh hour it's not looking good, you have to make the decision to inflate and go or not. It's best to wave off at the last minute rather than to press on with increasing certainty.
[21:12] <RPF-JR> Yeah, I'm working with a local school which is the issue, they want more certainty than I can give :-)
[21:12] <mfa298> I'd say that the consistent prediction is a sign that the factors you control have little impact on landing. It doesn't necessarily say anything about the quality of the wind data.
[21:14] <Ian_> You don't want sea, cities or aerodromes/airports etc. You can overfill to burst low and early to make less track distance, but that would seem to be your only option as the track itself is determined by the winds which can be influenced by launching earlier or later, so best to get a range of launch times/track predictions.
