[10:21] <torntrousers> Hello. I bought one of those yagi antenna's that Dave mentioned on the ML. Can't figure out how to assemble it! Hoping you here can help.
[10:21] <torntrousers> Here's the instructions and what it looks like: http://share.pho.to/AbWV5
[10:21] <torntrousers> It comes with that short length of 300 ohm ribbon cable, which I guess must be intended for the cross over connection between the two driven elements, but the plastic covers only have a round hole which fits a coax cable not the 300 ohm ribbon so I'd need to cut another hole for the ribbon cable, which doesn't seem right.
[10:21] Halfdead_ (~Halfdead@71-84-11-44.dhcp.trlk.ca.charter.com) joined #highaltitude.

[10:46] <Ian_> Mine is sat in the garage (eighteen months) and likewise I am out for most of the day, but will be back this evening.
[10:48] <SA6BSS-Mike> isnt it just to turn the ribbon 180 deg between the 4 brass connectorsand connect it to the brass connectors, and center from coax to capacitor and barid to
[10:49] <SA6BSS-Mike> you get it...
[10:49] <Ian_> torntrousers. From past experience though the shape of the hole is probably immaterial. The ribbon is for phasing and is just fits through the hole in the cover. You might like to use hot glue to seal up the hole afterwards, but don't get too excited about it.
[10:51] <Ian_> SA6BSS-Mike Yes. I can't comment further until I can see the instructions clearly though regarding the exact connections. I'll go and get the package now. It will probably mean that it gets built at this end earlier than it might otherwise.
[10:52] <AndyEsser> :)
[10:53] <torntrousers> ok, I could squash the ribbon cable through the hole in the cover, but then there is no hole for the coax to use so would need to cut one for that. Maybe thats what to do and the covers are generic ones not designed for use like this with the two driven elements?
[11:03] <SA6BSS-Mike> http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g0iSJadpyuc/UH_LEtdyMSI/AAAAAAAAAaQ/a6SyY8nQrHk/s1600/CIMG8350.JPG
[11:03] <SA6BSS-Mike> looking closley it looks like he used the holes for coax and just drilled small holes for regular single cables
[11:04] <SA6BSS-Mike> http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YBrFUWxsBeA/UHSGaNqhqPI/AAAAAAAAAYg/JeuLeBxTF9M/s1600/CIMG8336.JPG
[11:04] <Ian_> The mystery deepens - slightly. I have no instructions and no ribbon cable or short coax. But do have a beehive trimming capacitor in the box for the driven folded dipole - the slightly smaller ones. My directors are numbered 1 to 5 presumed to be counting from the driven element forward.ly
[11:05] <Ian_> The beehive is reminiscent of the phasing adjustment used on the HB9CV antenna.

[11:08] <Ian_> Right, just had a quick look at a 2m ZL that is languishing at the bottom of the garden and SA6BSS-Mike is right - never doubted it :)
[11:10] <SA6BSS-Mike> :)
[11:11] <torntrousers> Thanks for those links SA6BSS-Mike
[11:11] <SA6BSS-Mike> GL let us know how it goes
[11:14] <Ian_> The feeder coax comes from the driven element which is phased with the reflector via the bit of ribbon cable with the twist. I have a beehive trimmer, but previously a short length of coax from the driven element feed point was used as a matching stub and does have some advantages over the trimmer. The coax stub was supposed to coil up in it's junction box out of the way. I'll now go and look at Mike's links. Thanks Mike, I might
[11:14] <Ian_> I appear to be missing the mobile phone to put on the back of the antenna :) :)
[11:15] <SA6BSS-Mike> its realy this that say it all, https://www.google.se/search?q=ZL-7+70cm&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiWoKPX3-7RAhXSZpoKHT7kDf8Q_AUICCgB&biw=1707&bih=812&dpr=1.13#imgdii=7LP_aiwgxVD7qM:&imgrc=hEMtlmkxx8IGJM:
[11:15] <SA6BSS-Mike> sorry , this http://herc-hastings.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2e0ghx-70cm-zl-special2.jpg
[11:16] <torntrousers> Once thats assembled, it says "Adjust the capacitor for best S.W.R". I've no signal strength meter or anything so I guess all i can do is have a balloon tracker running and fiddle with the capacitor to see what gives the best rssi on the receiver?
[11:17] <craag> yes
[11:17] <craag> in fact you'll be tuning it for receive impedance, which will be a little better than using a swr meter + transmitter if you're just wanting to receive
[11:18] <torntrousers> ok. Thanks everyone, will go give it a try...

[11:29] <Ian_> On my 2m ZL, from about fifteen years ago I cut a hole for the matching stub and dressed it backwards, only to be told that it was actually designed to be coiled up out of the way in the round connector box.
[11:31] <Ian_> On receive and for transmission with modest power the beehive trimmer is Good, but for a long term robust answer the coax stub is probably the better idea but not as easily adjusted by a relative novice. It seems that the ZL magic comes with a few compromises to the thought process.
[11:32] <Ian_> As far as the tuning, craag is of course very right and the ears do an excellent job. On HF when presented with a manual tuner and wondering just how to tune things, the first premise is to look at tuning the receive signal for maximum smoke and you will be very close to ' The final answer'
[11:34] <SpacenearUS> New position from 03M10WX-11 after 0311 hours silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=M10WX-11
[11:35] <mfa298> maximum smoke (at least when transmitting) could also mean you got the tuning very wrong.
[11:36] <Ian_> I guess that there is nothing for it, but to put this thing together before taking it back to it's resting place. I think that I might play around with a coax stub, on receive to get mine up and running.
[11:37] <Ian_> mfa298 :) I was thinking more about the signal in the speaker, but your point is well noted. More smoke to the antenna perhaps rather than the finals.
[11:37] <Ian_> Think wigwams and signal fires
[11:37] <Ian_> Or is that flaming teepees
[11:37] <Ian_> Or RTTY
[11:37] <Ian_> :)
[11:42] <mfa298> I was assuming you meant noise on the receiver for tuning (I've used that method myself)
