[12:49] Action: Laurenceb has been reading about rocket fin flutter
[12:49] <Laurenceb> but I'm confused now
[12:50] <Laurenceb> it looks to me like aluminium alloy stands out as the obvious material choice, so why use composites
[12:50] <Laurenceb> (due to stiffness/density)
[12:50] <SpeedEvil> aluminium is damn good.
[12:50] <SpeedEvil> Mg/Al?
[12:50] <SpeedEvil> Mg/Al can be really quite stiff
[12:50] <Laurenceb> whatever, just alu alloys in general
[12:50] <SpeedEvil> lots better than regular Al
[12:51] <Laurenceb> they seem to beat CF for stiffness/density
[12:51] <SpeedEvil> I suspect that depends on the loading, and details
[12:51] <Laurenceb> yeah
[12:53] <SpeedEvil> ^carbon fibre percent and orientation by 'loading'
[12:53] <SpeedEvil> Have you looked at spruce?

[16:20] <edmoore> your computer is a good place
[16:20] <edmoore> it crashes if you try and install it onto a banana

[16:37] <SP9UOB-Tom> http://sp9uob.verox.pl/LoRa/lora-outdoor.jpg
[16:37] <Ian_> Why is there information displayed in the left hand panel but not the right. The gateway.txt is configured for two lora transceivers? is release I.8.6 live
[16:38] <Ian_> Tom, your professional approach does you credit. A very nice installation if I say so myself.

[16:41] <SP9UOB-Tom> Ian_: Do you have only one RF modulw ?
[16:41] <SP9UOB-Tom> module ?
[16:42] <Ian_> No, two, 434MHz and 868MHz. As I mentioned the board isn't actually installed at the moment, so that may make a difference.
[16:43] <Ian_> I'm just also aware that Rob has been on holiday recently . . .
[16:47] <SP9UOB-Tom> Ian_: that may make a difference.
[16:50] <Ian_> I need to get another RPi3 or make a breakout so that I can still still have access to tat (play) around with spare gpio pins
[16:51] <Ian_> I'll pop the board on later and re-check. Many thanks.

[17:20] <sjaustirni> Hi folks, what antenna do you use for your HA balloons?
[17:28] <edmoore> a quarter wave with ground plane
[17:28] <edmoore> it's 4 elements arranged in a cross whose plane is parallel to the surface of the earth
[17:28] <edmoore> and then a vertical element pointing downwards
[17:28] <edmoore> the 4 radial elements are connected to ground, and the vertical element is connected to the output of the radio
[17:29] <edmoore> the vertical element wants to be 1/4 of the wavelength of your operating frequency, so 17cm is using 434MHz which is what almost everyone here uses
[17:29] <edmoore> the radials can be the same or bigger, it's not so critical
[17:30] <sjaustirni> a patch antenna then?
[17:31] <edmoore> no
[17:31] <edmoore> nothing like

[17:32] <mfa298> top link has a guide which is along the lines of what most people use on their balloons
[17:33] <sjaustirni> will the first one be able to reach 30km distant ground sstation?
[17:34] <mfa298> It can with the right choice of frequency/ modulation/ reasonable ground station setup.
[17:36] <sjaustirni> what if I want to transmit also to the local aprs stations? Frequency there is 144.8 MHz
[17:36] <mfa298> you won't get that much distance when its low, thats why its important to chase as well.
[17:36] <edmoore> sjaustirni: what country are you in?
[17:36] <sjaustirni> edmoore, slovakia
[17:37] <edmoore> ah fine
[17:37] <mfa298> you'll need an antenna designed for aprs, have an amateur radio license and be somewhere that allows it airborne.
[17:37] <edmoore> well people use an antenna like that for both and usually have no problem getting 100s of km of range provided the balloon is up high enough
[17:37] <mfa298> you can scale up the ground plane antenna for 2m, or look at something like a dipole
[17:38] <sjaustirni> ok, I gotta go now folks. I'll figure out something. Thank you all

[18:35] <Kal> Thanks to the help on this forum I have managed to decode some text sent via a NTX2B and picked up by an SRD dongle using SRD sharp and dl-fldigi. The thing is only half the text is correct. What power levels should I see in sdr sharp and what sort of S/N should I see in dl-fldigi ? I need to track down if I have software config errors or my homemade antenna or dongle is the problem. Any help gratefully accepted !
[18:37] <PE2BZ> Can you show screenshots of the SDR software and dl-fldigi while receiving ?

[18:40] <Kal> I have not got them to hand but can get some after logging off. I remember the S/N was about 9-12dB in dl-fldigi - is that too low ??
[18:42] <PE2BZ> Power levels in SDR Sharp depend on gain settings, antenna type, antenna distance to the NTX
[18:42] <PE2BZ> ¨half the text is correct¨ means half is unreadable, or not received at all ?
[18:42] <Vaizki> sounds like you might be overloading the receiver with a too strong signal
[18:43] <PE2BZ> What power supply is used for the NTX2B ?

[18:44] <Kal> They are received (well mostly) but the wrong characters. The rx is only the other side of the room from the TX. The power supply for the NTX2B is the 3.3V line from the raspi.
[18:45] <PE2BZ> And the raspi is ¨well powered¨ ?
[18:47] <PE2BZ> You could retry and disconnect the antenna from the sdr dongle, if you see improvement Vaizki is on the right track and you RX could be overloaded. You also can keep the RX antenne connected and reduce the RF gain in SDR Sharp
[18:47] <Kal> Its powered from a mains adaptor - pi hut one so should be OK - but it is driving wifi, keyboard, mouse and GPS chip via us to serial card.
[18:47] <mfa298> Kal: you may do better powering the ntx2b from the 5v line on the pi, There's limited current available on the pi 3v3 bus
[18:48] <PE2BZ> While TX´ing, could you check if the 3.3 Volt is not fluctuating ?
[18:48] <edmoore> Could you post a screenshot of fldigi? While receiving, ideally with half the text decoded as you describe
[18:50] <Kal> Thanks for all the advice. I shall go away and try these out and get some screenshots too ! Thanks again and I'll connect again later.
