[06:49] <number10> morning
[06:55] <jcoxon> hey number10
[06:55] <number10> hi jcoxon - is that a solar ukhasnet node you are building i see on flickr
[06:55] <jcoxon> yeah
[06:56] <jcoxon> we're getting a little cluster around suffolk/cambridgeshire
[06:56] <jcoxon> would you be interested in hosting some
[06:56] <jcoxon> https://ukhas.net/map
[06:56] <number10> I will eventually do on on a oic - I have some of those serial ethernet mdules I was trying on something else
[06:56] <number10> pic
[06:57] <jcoxon> (they are too far to reach each other but when we launch a balloon...)
[06:57] devtt (59f23db7@gateway/web/freenode/ip.89.242.61.183) joined #highaltitude.
[06:58] <number10> yes - I shall try and find time to build one.
[06:58] <number10> I think I bought the radio modules some time back
[06:58] <jcoxon> i've got a few old nodes lying around which i could reprogram for you if needed
[06:59] <number10> do you have the gateways connected to a PC thats left on - or to your wifi hub
[07:00] <jcoxon> it can be either
[07:00] <number10> I think I took a peek at chris write up on that
[07:00] <jcoxon> my AB gateway is a laptop (as it does other stuff) while AA in suffolk is a ESP8266
[07:00] <jcoxon> which does its own wifi
[07:01] <jcoxon> there are some nice designs that are usb sticks and act as a gateway using the wifi
[07:01] Lemml (~andreas@p5B377F02.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) joined #highaltitude.
[07:01] <jcoxon> plug into any usb port
[07:03] <number10> I dont tend to leave PC on, but I have several esp8266s - and my shed has a solar panel
[07:03] <jcoxon> that sounds like a ideal set up :-)
[07:04] <jcoxon> so previously i've used an esp8266 as a serial - wifi bridge
[07:04] <jcoxon> but my weekend plan was to reprogram one to actually use hte arm core to do comms with the ukhasnet radio
[07:04] <jcoxon> and so skip the extra micro that i've previously used
[07:04] <jcoxon> just been deciding on the best way of wiring it up
[07:23] bertrik (~quassel@rockbox/developer/bertrik) joined #highaltitude.
[07:42] <Vaizki> are you using the lua firmware on the esp?
[07:42] <jcoxon> Vaizki, i was going to try the arduino lib
[07:43] <Vaizki> right, never tried that myself
[07:43] <jcoxon> neither have i
[07:43] <jcoxon> :-)
[07:43] <jcoxon> will report back
[07:43] <jcoxon> it looks easy, there is a sparkfun guide to it
[07:43] <Vaizki> the lua nodemcu seems good enough for most gateway tasks
[07:43] <Vaizki> Is it event callback based as well?
[07:43] <Vaizki> or some kind of magic? :)
[07:45] <Vaizki> the arm core must be pretty busy with doing wifi stuff, can't see you being able to wrest the main loop away from the stack
[07:46] <jcoxon> i think its magic, they talk about a function they've had to put in to 'yield' instead of delay
[07:46] <jcoxon> and that i think looks event/interrupt based
[07:48] <Vaizki> ok so it's basically co-op multitasking through yield
[07:49] <jcoxon> i guess so
[07:49] <jcoxon> i'm going with it just as i know the spi on it works and need that for the radio
[07:49] <jcoxon> and i can easily use the radio without too much porting
[07:49] <jcoxon> need to wire it up first though
[07:49] <Vaizki> probably yields at every delay() and at end of loop() at least
[07:50] <Vaizki> but great project if that's the extent of how you are limited
[07:50] <Vaizki> and if there is reasonable timer accuracy

[23:40] <Ian_> eal just in case you didn't realise SpacenearUS is a robot reporting contacts of balloon callsigns that have been detected (They may be registered imports from APRS) and can be seen on the tracker map

[23:46] <eal> Ian_ ok, thanks for the info
[23:46] <eal> I'm a beginner...
[23:47] <Ian_> I guess that the strange track from SR0FLY is caused by two HABs sharing the same callsign prior to 1742 yesterday.
[23:47] <Ian_> Not a problem eal, we all have to start somewhere and there is a lot to take in.
[23:48] <eal> yes, damn interesting! :)
[23:49] <Ian_> Exceedingly so. What direction are you coming from? Amateur Radio, Engineering Student (now or future), Hobby MCU hacking or just inspired?
[23:50] <Ian_> I have come from Amateur Radio and appreciate that there is a 'lot' more to learn yet.
[23:51] <Ian_> It is obviously a little easier if you start with one skill, whether it's an understanding of radio or programming, but not essential.
[23:53] <eal> Well, me and a friend has been interested in the SpaceX program for a long time, and we started discussing sending something up
[23:55] <eal> I'm a consultant that has been working with data communications >30 years, varius skills from programming, building hardware etc so I don't seen any real problems. I of course need to learn a lot about the environment at +30km, low temp, low pressure ect
[23:56] <Ian_> So not a spotty faced 14 year old . . . good head start.
[23:57] <Ian_> I'm moving towards the end of the spectrum having spent a long time as a communicator and programming, but more recently got into Arduino etc.
[23:58] <Ian_> For the most part, a lot of the electronics keep themselves warm in the rarefied atmosphere. Batteries - L91 Ultimate Lithium are good to around -40 degrees C so are de rigeur
[23:59] <Ian_> I got roped in when friends suggested a HAB project and I took the bait.
