[08:39] <costyn> fsphil: yea!
[08:42] <costyn> fsphil: you're using the gps-bee as well right? any advice on the antenna? which seems fragile and doesn't have a very long cable

[08:44] <fsphil> I have one costyn, but I haven't used it on a flight. So for I've only flown the fsa03
[08:44] <costyn> fsphil: ok
[08:45] <fsphil> but es it does seem fragile
[08:45] <fsphil> +y
[08:45] <fsphil> I'd keep it inside the box, well padded
[08:45] <fsphil> I usually put bubblewrap around the fsa03
[08:45] <costyn> ok good idea
[08:46] <fsphil> just enough that it can't move around too much
[08:46] <costyn> the fsa03 has an antenna which wobbles if you breathe on it apparently?
[08:46] <costyn> ;)
[08:46] <fsphil> indeed, the fsa03 has a reputation :)
[08:47] <fsphil> great in every aspect, except that antenna connection
[08:47] <daveake> :-). Cheap though.
[08:47] <daveake> I still like the Lassen IQ :p
[08:47] <fsphil> by far the cheapest yea -- though discontinued, so buy them while you can
[08:47] <daveake> Got 2. Cost less than 1 GS407
[08:51] <fsphil> good incentive for me to start doing surface-mount boards - can put the gps chip and antenna on the board directly like Darkside did

[08:58] <daveake> Yep. I haven't done PCBs for 30 years, and that was with rub-down transfers ...
[08:59] <Darkside> i should be taking orders for ublox 6 breakouts :P
[08:59] <daveake> You should :)
[08:59] Nick change: SamSilver -> SamSIlver_
[08:59] <Darkside> i'd be happy to sell them at cost
[08:59] <Darkside> i just need to work out what that is...
[09:01] <fsphil> Darkside, sure thing. are they easy enough to solder?
[09:01] <Darkside> i'm happy to mail you an assembled board

[09:05] <costyn> yes I'd be interested as well
[09:05] <fsphil> even better. lemme know how much and I'll throw it over somehow
[09:06] <Darkside> ok
[09:06] <Darkside> PCBs were $4.42 each (i got fast shipping, later production runs will be cheaper)
[09:06] <Darkside> NEO-6Q was $21
[09:06] <Darkside> antennas was $8.50
[09:06] <Darkside> 100nF cap was like 2c
[09:07] <costyn> :)
[09:07] <Darkside> that makes up about AUD$34
[09:07] <WillDuckworth> i'm in, if they're going
[09:07] <Darkside> thats about 21.5 pounds
[09:07] <Darkside> no idea about shipping costs
[09:08] <costyn> 25 euro's, pretty cheap
[09:08] <Darkside> it'll be fuck all weight, so i'm hoping shipping should be fast

[09:15] <Darkside> i CBFed fixing it
[09:15] <fsphil> very cute
[09:15] <Darkside> araldite keeps it held down nicely :-)
[09:16] <fsphil> the ublox only needs a few capacitors to work?
[09:16] <Darkside> well......
[09:16] <Darkside> i should probably have more filtering on the board
[09:16] <Darkside> but yes, it works

[09:18] <fsphil> though I usually don't bother :)
[09:19] <fsphil> the fsa03's at least seem to work pretty well without any additional filtering
[09:20] <Darkside> ok guys
[09:20] <Darkside> http://tinyurl.com/ublox-breakout
[09:20] <Darkside> can someone put that in the topic?
[09:22] <costyn> Darkside: nice breakout board pix.
[09:24] <Darkside> hmmmm
[09:24] <fsphil> google docs is wwweeeiird
[09:24] <Darkside> would anyone mind if i tack on another $5 or so to the price?
[09:24] <fsphil> I've never seen it working before. that's quite impressive
[09:25] <Darkside> so i can kind of recoup the costs of me making the damn things
[09:25] <fsphil> tis fine for me
[09:25] <Darkside> okies..
[09:25] <costyn> Darkside: nope go for it, make 'm AUD$40
[09:25] <Darkside> its still cheap...
[09:25] <Darkside> ok
[09:25] <costyn> Darkside: yup
[09:26] <costyn> Darkside: you don't have to justify it :)
[09:26] <Darkside> lol

[09:27] <fsphil> lol
[09:27] <Darkside> ahh, but i'll know :P
[09:27] <costyn> ghehe
[09:27] <Darkside> ok, now i need to figure out trackable international shipping options
[09:28] <costyn> couriers are usually quite expensive; if the AU postal service has a good tracking option it'd probably be cheapest
[09:28] <Darkside> FUUUUUU they charge heaps for tracking
[09:28] <Darkside> wtf
[09:28] <Darkside> gotta find alternatives
[09:29] <costyn> Darkside: maybe it'd be cheaper to send a bunch to 1 person here in Europe and they send it to the rest of us?
[09:29] <Darkside> yeah
[09:29] <Darkside> that might be a good idea
[09:29] <costyn> depending on how much we trust eachother :P
[09:29] <Darkside> hehe
[09:30] <costyn> or just make someone an official EU dealer :)
[09:31] <daveake> :)
[09:31] <costyn> all EU orders placed with them; they have a small stock to send to people
[09:31] <Darkside> haha
[09:31] <costyn> or am I getting ahead of things now
[09:31] <Darkside> well, if you guys want to deal with making them, i'm happy to give out the designs
[09:31] <Darkside> you can get the PCBs manufactured with seedstudio
[09:31] <Darkside> then you need to find a wholesaler to get the ublox modules and the antennas from
[09:32] <costyn> Darkside: all of which we're trying to avoid by ordering from you :D
[09:32] <Darkside> heh
[09:32] <Darkside> i'd better order some more antennas...
[09:33] <Darkside> i only have 3 left :(
[09:37] <Darkside> ok
[09:37] <Darkside> without tracking, its $12.50 to europe
[09:38] <Darkside> via air mail, i'm assuming it'll take around 2 weeks to get there
[09:47] <fsphil> might make sense combining them, if a few more UK'ers want some
[09:47] <Darkside> yeah
[09:47] <fsphil> since most of us will be in the same place shortly
[09:47] <Darkside> how much is shipping between european countries?
[09:47] <Darkside> now THAT is a good point
[09:48] <Darkside> but theres no way i'll get them manufactured in time
[09:48] <Darkside> unless you guys can deal with the antennas
[09:48] <staylo> nonsense, you just need a montage
[09:48] <Darkside> the problem is i don;t have enough antennas in stock
[09:49] <fsphil> without tracking posting to say .nl would cost 1.30 GBP
[09:49] NigeyS (~EcEnTiAl@cpc5-cdif13-2-0-cust232.5-1.cable.virginmedia.com) joined #highaltitude.
[09:49] <Darkside> oh jeez is that all
[09:50] <Darkside> yeah, i'll just ship the lot to you then fsphil
[09:50] <Darkside> i'll have to package them veeeery carefully
[09:50] <costyn> well I've had some expensive electronics get lost in the mail recently (between NL and Denmark); kind of want to use tracking now :)
[09:50] <Darkside> lots of bubble wrap
[09:50] <costyn> but I'd be ok having fsphil mail them to me
[09:51] <Darkside> ok
[09:51] <fsphil> that's fine
[09:51] <Darkside> but yea, theres no way i'll have them in the UK in time for the conference
[09:52] <Darkside> i won't get the antennas i need for another few weeks
[09:52] <fsphil> royal mail don't have any international tracking options
[09:53] <costyn> fsphil: hmm would be nice if there was a website you could compare shipping options; enter the address and the weight and some other options and have it query local mail but also UPS and other large (and small) couriers
[09:54] <costyn> ask and ye shall receive http://www.courier-comparison.co.uk/
[09:54] <costyn> although it says its a demosite
[09:54] <daveake> In the UK there's interparcel.com and parcel2go.com, both of whom will give you a selection of pricing for UPS, TNT, FedEx etc
[09:54] <daveake> We send all our stuff through interparcel
[09:55] <daveake> Actually cheaper than when we had a UPS account
[09:59] <fsphil> all about 15 GBP

[10:00] <fsphil> royal mail will compensate up to 46 GBP, should cover any losses
[10:01] <costyn> fsphil: 15 GBP to send something of 25 grams?
[10:01] <Darkside> weight of these is about 30g i think
[10:01] <Darkside> maybe less
[10:01] <Darkside> but add on a bit for packaging, etc
[10:01] <costyn> ok, it was a ballpark figure :)
[10:02] <fsphil> costyn, yea -- they all seem to round it up to 1kg
[10:02] <costyn> ok
[10:04] <fsphil> the signed-for service is about 7 GBP
[10:05] <fsphil> but it only offers tracking within the uk
[10:07] <fsphil> yea I'll use that, at least we'll know if its lost
[10:07] <costyn> ok :)
[10:08] <Darkside> hey guys..
[10:08] <Darkside> i worked out how much i've spent on dev costs for the micronut boards and other stuff so far
[10:08] <Darkside> AUD$660
[10:08] <Darkside> whee
[10:08] <costyn> so are ublox breakout boards prices being adjusted again? :P
[10:09] <Darkside> nah
[10:09] <costyn> (i was kidding :)
[10:09] <Darkside> the uBlox breakout board didn't take me long to make :P
[10:09] <Darkside> like, about 10 minutes to do the PCB
[10:09] <Darkside> :P
[10:10] <Darkside> anyway, working out the BOM for a micronut board..

[19:31] <Hiena> ' evening!
[19:32] <Hiena> Anybody knows a way to connect paralell monolitic RF power stages?
[19:33] <Dan-K2VOL> Hiena I've no idea what that is :-(
[19:33] <Hiena> Found a "dirt cheap" 18 dBm driver, but i need about 20 dBm output power.
[19:33] <pod> someone in ##hamradio might no
[19:34] <pod> isnt 18 close enough?
[19:34] <Hiena> 18 dBm is about half power of the 20dBm.
[19:35] <Dan-K2VOL> dB is a not-intuitive scale
[19:35] <pod> lineofsight is a coool feature of balloons
[19:35] <pod> however, certain freqs have RF attenuation due to oxygen in air etc
[19:35] <Dan-K2VOL> yes, I make sure to order it with every one
[19:35] <Dan-K2VOL> :-P
[19:38] <pod> i realize 433 MHz is populaor, but there are a number of GHz range amateur bands virtually empty
[19:39] <pod> thats where you hit oxygen-attenuation issues
[19:39] <pod> http://kb9mwr.blogspot.com/2008/12/use-it-or-lose-it.html
[19:48] <Hiena> Ah, got an idea. From the modulator output i'll add an aircore transformer, with middle tapped secondary coil. The center tap will be grounded, so each side of the secondary coil will be in opposing phase. Each side of the secondary will drive one gain block and the output will be connected to a same transformer with a matching output impedance.
