[05:53] <Darkside> so what happened with atlas's launch?
[05:54] <natrium42> gps broke above 12km
[05:54] <natrium42> but the crystal oven worked
[05:54] <natrium42> so the tx didn't drift
[05:55] <Darkside> last position i see on rharrisons tracker was at 4km
[05:56] <Darkside> hmm thats 13710 feet
[05:56] <Darkside> so it landed somewhere in the north sea?
[05:56] <natrium42> yep
[05:56] <Darkside> heh
[05:56] <Darkside> i guess they aren't getting that back...
[05:57] <natrium42> unless it comes ashore somewhere and somebody finds it
[05:57] <Darkside> heh
[05:57] <natrium42> it has happened before
[05:57] <Darkside> cool
[05:57] <Darkside> well, we're launching tomorrow around midday our time
[05:58] <Darkside> so 1:30UTC
[05:58] <Darkside> i'll live stream the launch
[05:58] <natrium42> by tomorrow you mean nov 15th?
[05:58] <Darkside> yes
[05:58] <Darkside> :P
[05:59] <natrium42> kk
[05:59] <natrium42> what
[05:59] <natrium42> what's the payload?
[05:59] <Darkside> juxta is just doing a 100g balloon with the small payload
[06:00] <Darkside> its so we can test the predictor
[06:00] <natrium42> testing offline predictor?
[06:00] <natrium42> alright, cool
[06:00] <Darkside> predictions say it will only fly for just over an hour - we won't get to the landing site in time
[06:00] <Darkside> so we'll have to use the prediction for the last few km of altitude, or wherever we lose the signal
[06:01] <natrium42> wow, those chase cars are really hardcore --> http://projecthorus.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/DSC_9581.jpg
[06:01] <Darkside> hahaha
[06:01] <Darkside> they're amateur radio operators :P
[06:02] <Darkside> they have full DF equipment
[06:02] <Darkside> i was operating the DF in the car on teh right for the horus 8 launch :P
[06:02] <Darkside> was good fun :P
[06:02] <shenki> Darkside: when you say live streaming, what will you be streaming?
[06:02] <Darkside> shenki: video
[06:02] <Darkside> will ustream it
[06:02] <Darkside> i'm just getting everything set up now so i can test it
[06:02] <shenki> Darkside: using optus 3g?
[06:02] <Darkside> yep
[06:03] <Darkside> for the launch it will be fine
[06:03] <shenki> cool
[06:03] <shenki> there's plenty of coverage down there?
[06:03] <Darkside> once we get out in the field maybe not
[06:03] <Darkside> yeah at graemes house it was fine, remember?
[06:03] <Darkside> oh frick, i turned off the CD drive on my usb modem
[06:03] <shenki> i only had 2G
[06:03] <Darkside> so i can't install the software
[06:03] <Darkside> hrmmm
[06:03] <Darkside> i had 3g...
[06:04] <natrium42> Darkside, you can enable ustream widget on spacenear.us if you'd like
[06:04] <shenki> you're with optus, im 3
[06:04] <natrium42> it's in config.php
[06:04] <Darkside> natrium42: oh cool
[06:04] <Darkside> i can't do it :P
[06:04] <Darkside> juxta will have to
[06:04] <natrium42> kk
[06:04] <Darkside> i'll see if i can keep ustream going while we're in the car too :P
[06:04] <Darkside> that'll be fun
[06:04] <natrium42> is 3g this good in aus?
[06:04] <Darkside> its okay
[06:04] <Darkside> we might drop out when we get near the landing site
[06:04] <shenki> depends what provider you can afford :)
[06:05] <Darkside> that too
[06:05] <Darkside> hmm how am i going to get this 3g card working...
[06:05] <shenki> if you go with the former-monolopy provider, Telstra, you get good coverage most inhabited places
[06:05] <shenki> but you pay twice as much for the privledge
[06:06] <Darkside> i turned the cd off aaaaages ago
[06:06] <natrium42> haha, same story in every country it seems
[06:06] <shenki> Darkside: download the drivers from the website, they've probably been updated since anyway
[06:06] <Darkside> yeah
[06:06] <Darkside> its not drivers tho, its the software, and thats usually branded
[06:06] <Darkside> i might see if i can get it from the internode website
[06:06] <shenki> or *cough* use a real operating system
[06:07] <Darkside> the *real* operating system doesn't support video in flash properly
[06:07] <Darkside> not on teh website i'm using
[06:07] <shenki> ustream?
[06:07] <shenki> yeah i todes
[06:07] <shenki> we used it at format
[06:07] <Darkside> oh ok
[06:07] <Darkside> i'l need windows going anyway tho
[06:07] <Darkside> for all the other shit i'll be running

[06:30] <shenki> take it off... slowly.
[06:30] <juxta> is this running on the netbook?
[06:30] <Darkside> juxta: yep
[06:31] <Darkside> i don't like the video quality, but it will do
[06:31] <shenki> can you opt out of sound, to free up some bandwidth for video?
[06:31] <Darkside> hmm yeah i think i can
[06:31] <Darkside> i'd have to walk over to the netbook though
[06:32] <shenki> Slacky
[06:32] <shenki> Slack
[06:32] <Darkside> :P
[06:32] <Darkside> i haven't got VNC set up on it
[06:32] <juxta> why not use the webcam in your macbook?
[06:32] <shenki> hows the study going?

[06:33] <juxta> want to try one of those?
[06:33] <Darkside> yeah sire
[06:34] <juxta> i'll set one up
[06:35] <Darkside> ok on my macbook now, on 3g
[06:35] <Darkside> jut getting ustream running
[06:35] <Darkside> argh ants
[06:35] <juxta> hmm, says channel is offline
[06:35] <juxta> those little cams need a driver, hrm
[06:35] <Darkside> yeah i havent got it runnning yet
[06:35] <juxta> maybve give it a miss
[06:35] <Darkside> its not showing my video
[06:35] <Darkside> hmm
[06:36] <Darkside> it doesnt want to access my webcam for some reado
[06:36] <Darkside> ill just do it on my netbook, it will be good enough
[06:36] <shenki> i suspect it would be more of a bandwidth issue than a source image issue
[06:36] <juxta> okay
[06:36] <Darkside> yeah
[06:37] <shenki> you could verify that by streaming from the netbook over wifi
[06:37] <Darkside> ok
[06:37] <juxta> the webcam in my netbook is rubbish
[06:37] <juxta> i dont know if Darkside's would be better
[06:37] <shenki> simon from hackerspace has one of the sony ps3 cameras
[06:37] <Darkside> working on wifi now
[06:37] <Darkside> hold
[06:37] <shenki> they have drivers for all platforms, and are the best bang for buck webcams you can get, imo
[06:38] <Darkside> ok its running
[06:39] <juxta> whut
[06:39] <Darkside> hmm brightness is off
[06:39] <juxta> it's still broad daylight at my place
[06:39] <juxta> oh thats better
[06:39] <juxta> poor dynamic range
[06:39] <Darkside> yep
[06:40] <juxta> who would have guessed
[06:40] <Darkside> oh shit, need to get the power cable for my scanner sorted
[06:40] <Darkside> otherwise powerboard :P
[06:40] <juxta> performance is about the same as the 3g
[06:40] <juxta> i can bring a powerboard for you if you like Darkside
[06:40] <Darkside> cool
[06:40] <Darkside> then i can just run it off the powerboard :P
[06:40] <Darkside> haha
[06:40] <juxta> so you can just plug your macbook and scanner in
[06:41] <Darkside> i never bought a lipo for the scanner...
[06:41] <Darkside> ah well
[06:41] <juxta> i'll bring the R10 too
[06:41] <juxta> just in case

[06:42] <Darkside> where was it? and what was up on the stage?
[06:42] <Darkside> it looked like a las vegas sign or something
[06:42] <juxta> bands on stage
[06:42] <juxta> it was at the thebby
[06:42] <Darkside> where?
[06:43] <Darkside> jeez its bright
[06:43] <juxta> it was 'casino royale' theme, we had lots of play money and gambling ;p

[06:44] <shenki> heh, owch
[06:45] <Darkside> haha
[06:45] <Darkside> also natrium says we can turn on the ustream thing on spacenear.us
[06:45] <Darkside> you have to change something in the config.php
[06:46] <Darkside> also look at the tracker juxta :)
[06:46] <juxta> yeah
[06:46] <Darkside> ou can see their flight path
[06:46] <Darkside> i think they are missing stuff tho
[06:46] <juxta> haha yeah just had a look before
[06:47] <juxta> wonder what happened to cause the sharp drop in alt
[06:47] <Darkside> mm
[06:48] <juxta> Darkside, took me a while to get this 3G dongle working in the linux router
[06:48] <Darkside> hmm
[06:48] <Darkside> this modem is basically the same thing by the way
[06:48] <juxta> at first its serial ports were not responding or anything
[06:48] <Darkside> it just doesn't do HSUPA
[06:48] <juxta> eventually worked out there's a utility out there for older kernels to switch the dongles from 'install mode' to 'modem mode'
[06:49] <Darkside> yeah, i can do that if you need
[06:49] <Darkside> i had my fake cd switched off for aaaages, only turned it on today to make it work on the netbook
[06:49] <juxta> thats okay - I mean on my home router
[06:49] <Darkside> ohh
[06:49] <Darkside> what do you use in the car?
[06:49] <juxta> the carpc does it
[06:49] <juxta> (windows)
[06:49] <Darkside> oh, easier than :P
[06:49] <Darkside> then*
[06:50] <juxta> yeah, you just plug it in and it's good to go
[06:50] <juxta> so can you actuallyswitch the fake CD drive off forever?
[06:50] <Darkside> yeah, you send a AT command down the Diag serial pipe

[06:52] <Darkside> but i ahd to turn it back on to get the connection software on windows

[07:47] <juxta> I just remembered I have a little HD video camera you can use on the day Darkside
[07:47] <Darkside> eh?
[07:48] <Darkside> as a webcam? or just as a video camera
[07:48] <juxta> jcoxon, what ended up happening to your launch? I wasnt around - did it end up in the water? :(
[07:48] <juxta> Darkside, yeah as a regular camera, it may work as a webcam too... i'm not sure, I'll check
[07:48] <Darkside> its ok
[07:49] <Darkside> i can use the internal camera
[07:49] <jcoxon> juxta, yeah
[07:49] <Darkside> the limitation will be the 3g upstrema bandwidth
[07:49] <jcoxon> ublox gps was not happy
[07:49] <Darkside> because m card can't do HDUPA
[07:49] <Darkside> HSUPA*
[07:49] <jcoxon> seemed to stay in portable mode so stopped working at 12km
[07:49] <Darkside> jcoxon: >_>
[07:49] <jcoxon> then it didn't float
[07:49] <Darkside> oh damn
[07:49] <juxta> oh damn, how annoying
[07:49] <jcoxon> and so burst and descended
[07:49] <juxta> did it just cut out entirely? or stop reporting alt data?
[07:50] <jcoxon> stopped reporting all data apart from time
[07:50] <juxta> oh how annoying :(
[07:50] <jcoxon> indeed
[07:50] <jcoxon> crystal oven worked well
[07:50] <jcoxon> kept it pretty stable
[07:50] <juxta> excellent
[07:50] <juxta> no re-tuning of the radios needed?
[07:51] <jcoxon> any drift was kept within the AFC
[07:51] <Darkside> cool
[07:51] <Darkside> i still don't envy your radio laws over there :(
[07:51] <jcoxon> lots of lessons from the flight
[07:52] <Darkside> sucks tht you can only use the ISM band with 10mw :(
[07:52] <juxta> how did the launch itself go jcoxon?
[07:52] <jcoxon> i secretly like the challenge
[07:52] <jcoxon> the launch was great
[07:52] <jcoxon> so easy with steve's launchline techniqui
[07:52] <jcoxon> e
[07:52] <Darkside> launchline?
[07:52] <m1x10> jcoxon: what launch?
[07:52] <juxta> excellent
[07:52] <juxta> what's the trick? :)
[07:53] <juxta> Darkside, we're using the old launch site tomorrow
[07:53] <juxta> helium's already up there
[07:53] <Darkside> eh?
[07:53] <Darkside> whats the launch site?
[07:53] <Darkside> someones place?
[07:53] <juxta> yes
[07:53] <jcoxon> so you put a small ring onto the neck of the balloon
[07:53] <juxta> a freind of ours
[07:54] <jcoxon> and through this you put a very long line in a loop
[07:54] <jcoxon> so you are holding both ends
[07:54] <juxta> ahh
[07:54] <jcoxon> you then slowly let out the balloon on this line
[07:54] <jcoxon> until the payload is fully suspended
[07:54] <jcoxon> then release one end of your launch line
[07:54] <jcoxon> it runs through the loop and gently releases the balloon
[07:54] <juxta> good thinking
[07:55] <jcoxon> allows you to use lower tensile line (allowing international flights), get an idea of where the balloon is going to go
[07:55] <jcoxon> and also reel it back in easily
[07:55] <juxta> yeah
[07:56] <juxta> what's the deal with the line strength and international flights?
[07:56] <juxta> just weight?
[07:56] <juxta> or are there rules?

[07:58] <juxta> oh
[07:58] <juxta> this is the same as the australian rules in the definitions etc
[08:00] <juxta> interesting :)
[08:00] <jcoxon> where you going to fly to?
[08:00] <Darkside> nsw ? :P
[08:00] <jcoxon> hehe
[08:00] <juxta> oh - i'm not planning any international flights
[08:00] <Darkside> should fo a long flight to NSW or something :P
[08:00] <jcoxon> i'd love having all that distance...
[08:00] <Darkside> get some amateurs from there to help retrieve it
[08:01] <juxta> but we have the same categories (light, medium, heavy) for generall ballooning

[08:02] <Darkside> hmm i think i might order pizza
[08:02] <Darkside> might go see if anyoen else in the house wants anything
[08:04] <juxta> jcoxon, do you mind if i clear the tracker later tonight?
[08:05] <Darkside> juxta: do you know where to get coaxial cable?
[08:05] <Darkside> like, cheaply? :P

[08:05] <Darkside> i want to get a heap of RG58 or something so i can set up a HF antenna
[08:05] <Darkside> eew no
[08:05] <Darkside> hehe
[08:05] <Darkside> i might ask adrian when he gets back
[08:05] <Darkside> i'm sure he'll know
[08:05] <juxta> he usually buys it from RS

[08:07] <juxta> how long are the runs going to be?
[08:07] <Darkside> HF will be reasonable
[08:07] <Darkside> i want to have the feedpoint somewhere around the middle of the house
[08:07] <Darkside> and run a inverted V along the wide of the house
[08:07] <juxta> ah
[08:08] <Darkside> i know it's not going to work well, but its the best i can do here
[08:08] <jcoxon> juxta, yeah not problem
[08:08] <jcoxon> just going to screenshot it
[08:08] <Darkside> a 30m run should do
[08:08] <juxta> alrighty
[08:09] <Darkside> looks to be about $100 from RS
[08:09] <juxta> isnt it only about $1.50/m from the local stores?
[08:09] <Darkside> hmm
[08:09] <Darkside> not sure
[08:09] <Darkside> will have to hunt and find out
[08:09] <juxta> i reckon last time I bought some it was fairly cheap
[08:09] <Darkside> anyway, i'm hoping to get a pole up somewhere that i can put a proper UHF setup on
[08:10] <Darkside> and VHF too
[08:10] <jcoxon> juxta, done
[08:10] <juxta> thanks jcoxon, i'll leave it up till I go to bed tonight :)

[16:36] <WillDuckworth> they seemed ok with my application which is near hereford
[16:36] <NigeySWales> they dont use it much now, they used to do some low level training from there, was great watching the tornados screaming 500ft above you lol
[16:36] <jonsowman> we got a NOTAM for Bromyard
[16:37] <jonsowman> that was fine
[16:37] <NigeySWales> WillDuckworth, forgot you were that close, ill give it a try, other option is to pop down to cambridge hehe

[16:39] <jonsowman> NigeySWales: did you hear atlas?
[16:39] <WillDuckworth> bit of an experiment really, pinching a bit of jcoxon horus and rjharrison stuff in combo
[16:39] <jcoxon> oh mine isn't horus
[16:39] <jcoxon> thats juxta
[16:40] <jonsowman> WillDuckworth: great :)
[16:40] <NigeySWales> jonsowman, no radio yet, i should have 1 by later tonight, i think atlas wouldve been to far east, ive got poo horizon here whichever way i look

[16:43] <WillDuckworth> did you just make a gumstix package for it?
[16:44] <jcoxon> for open embedded?
[16:44] <WillDuckworth> yep
[16:44] <jcoxon> i think so
[16:44] <jcoxon> where that is is a different matter
[16:45] <jcoxon> i don't have a working open-embedded setup
[16:45] <jcoxon> any longer
[16:46] <WillDuckworth> tell me about it - bit of a faff to get al going, will document how i got stuff to work....
[16:46] <jcoxon> not sure how much i've documented to tell the truth

[16:49] <WillDuckworth> would be v helpful ;) no pressure..... it's a USB webcam
[16:49] <jcoxon> eek

[16:57] <rjharrison_> Any thoughts on the GPS failure?
[16:57] <jcoxon> yeah it must have been in portable mode
[16:57] <jcoxon> its a ublox thing - they have multiple modes
[16:58] <jcoxon> and you need to set them
[16:58] <jcoxon> my code set it on boot
[16:58] <rjharrison_> what is portable mode?
[16:58] <jcoxon> optimised for on the ground

[20:32] <NigeySWales> yeah, they can keep their 45degree heat though, thats a bit to hot for us brits lol
[20:32] <LazyLeopard> Only spring! High pollen season.
[20:32] <NigeySWales> ahh well good work Daniel !
[20:32] <DanielRichman> hmm what?
[20:33] <LazyLeopard> Last time I went to Australia this time of year I spent the whole time needing full-strength hay-fever meds, and still suffering...
[20:33] <DanielRichman> oh right, yeah
[20:33] <Lunar_Lander> at least these are good australians
[20:33] <NigeySWales> ouch, m lucky i dont suffer hayfever
[20:33] <Lunar_Lander> I had quite a bit of trouble with one certain person from au
[20:33] <Lunar_Lander> but that is over :)
[20:33] <NigeySWales> oh dear
[20:33] <Lunar_Lander> yeah
[20:34] <fsphil> rupert murdock?
[20:34] <NigeySWales> lol
[20:34] <Lunar_Lander> she was the wife of a forum moderator and just because I commented on her, he gave me a warning
[20:34] <NigeySWales> bit over protective
[20:34] <Lunar_Lander> yes
[20:34] <Lunar_Lander> it even was a friendly comment
[20:35] <Lunar_Lander> because he told how he was lucky to find a woman who understood his interest in spaceflight
[20:35] <NigeySWales> lol crazy, if i hit the roof at every comment the fiance gets id have a whole army to go after!
[20:35] <Lunar_Lander> and I said, yes, this is rarely occurring in women
[20:35] <Lunar_Lander> yeah xD
[20:36] <NigeySWales> meh, my fiances quite into my astronomy, thats kinda rare to!
[20:36] <Lunar_Lander> well, my statement was then called "harrasment" and "this cannot be accepted"
[20:36] <NigeySWales> pffff
[20:36] <Lunar_Lander> yes
[20:39] <Lunar_Lander> well do you know what I thought after that?
[20:39] <Lunar_Lander> I thought: "G.W. F*** YOU!"
[20:39] <Lunar_Lander> xD
[20:39] <NigeySWales> lmao i can well imagine
[20:40] <Lunar_Lander> my friend from Slovenia also did get some infractions
[20:40] <Lunar_Lander> one was "you post too often"
[20:40] <NigeySWales> wtf lol
[20:40] <Lunar_Lander> there is a guy who posts like 15 times a day
[20:40] <Lunar_Lander> he does so without any warnings
[20:41] <Lunar_Lander> yeah
[20:41] <Lunar_Lander> there is one person who created some kind of an orbital glider
[20:41] <Lunar_Lander> it wouldn't fly in the real world, only in the sim, because the wing area is too small
[20:41] <Lunar_Lander> when my friend pointed that out
[20:42] <Lunar_Lander> Bang, another warning
[20:42] <NigeySWales> oh how petty can people get
[20:42] <Lunar_Lander> yes
[20:42] <Lunar_Lander> I mean
[20:43] <Lunar_Lander> when i started out with the idea of "reviving" manned research ballooning, there was some criticism at uni
[20:43] <Lunar_Lander> and I came to the insight that it is really too expensive and cumbersome
[20:43] <Lunar_Lander> and that the unmanned strato balloon is much better
[20:43] <Lunar_Lander> this was constructive criticism
[20:43] <Lunar_Lander> not destructive
[20:43] <Lunar_Lander> and that really drives developments
[20:44] <NigeySWales> some people just cant stand criticism either way, which is rather sad
[20:44] <Lunar_Lander> yes
[20:45] <NigeySWales> id rather have my plans criticised if they are wrong before i took a project into development tbh, saves time, money, and i gain knowledge
[20:45] <Lunar_Lander> that is true
[20:45] <Lunar_Lander> I also contacted flight safety quite early on
[20:45] <Lunar_Lander> to learn what I can do and what I cannot do
[20:46] <NigeySWales> best way, either that or learn half way through your whole project is a no go
[20:47] <Lunar_Lander> yes
[20:48] <Lunar_Lander> one thing was, that the person of flight safety who is responsible for my sector said, that I don't need a radar reflector
[20:48] <Lunar_Lander> I doubted that immediately
[20:49] <m1x10> Hi Lunar_Lander
[20:50] <Lunar_Lander> hi m1x10
[20:50] <Lunar_Lander> by the way
[20:50] <Lunar_Lander> you all know that "HAB World Record list"?
[20:51] <NigeySWales> theres a list?
[20:52] <m1x10> http://www.arhab.org/records/records.html
[20:52] <NigeySWales> ah cheers
[20:54] <Lunar_Lander> and that one balloon which holds the record for the lowest flight
[20:54] <NigeySWales> wow 128,000 ft
[20:54] <Lunar_Lander> I looked that up

[20:57] <SpeedEvil> Generally bogus.
[20:57] <Lunar_Lander> yes
[20:57] <Lunar_Lander> I thought what the damn sense in that is
[20:58] <SpeedEvil> The sensitivity of LEDs does not vary with wavelength as the emission spectra.

[21:35] <NigeySWales> how are you this evening sir ?
[21:35] <GW8RAK> Relaxing after a nice walk in Snowdonia.
[21:35] <GW8RAK> And determined not to get too stressed about the software.
[21:36] <NigeySWales> oh some software probs?
[21:36] <GW8RAK> Been hitting my head against a brickwall, so I'm just taking it easy.
[21:36] <GW8RAK> Yes, trying to get the CRC calculation working. It works under most conditions, but there are some where it doesn't.
[21:37] <GW8RAK> But once this is done, I can get the soldering iron out and start on the hardware.
[21:37] <NigeySWales> eek, thought you had that crc stuff all wrapped up :(

[21:38] <NigeySWales> well im sure you'll work it out at some point

[21:39] <NigeySWales> well you did the best thing, walked away from it for a bit, and what nicer place than snowdonia :)
[21:39] <fsphil> what conditions cause it to fail?
[21:40] <GW8RAK> It is a case of decimal, vs ASCII.
[21:40] <GW8RAK> It works with ASCII, but decimal is the problem
[21:40] <GW8RAK> It is probably something very simple, but I've just lost the plot
[21:42] <fsphil> yea, rounding error or something
[21:42] natrium42 (~natrium42@199.243.188.202) joined #highaltitude.
[21:42] <GW8RAK> No, I think it is just that the calculation doesn't work for decimal unless they are "1" format, 1 is treated as ASCII
[21:44] <GW8RAK> But I did manage to get some interesting observations from signal strengths yesterday.
[21:45] <fsphil> how much did you receive? didn't even get a peep here
[21:46] <GW8RAK> Most land based transmissions exhibit some polarisation changes on their way to the receiver. So a horizontal aerial will pick up vertically polarised signals and vice versa.
[21:46] <GW8RAK> However, from yesterday, these polarisation changes are much less for balloon work so a vertically polarised yagi is a must.
[21:47] <fsphil> ah I didn't know that
[21:47] <GW8RAK> A 21ele horizontally polarised yagi (18dB of gain) was no better than a white stick collinear with 7dB of gain. In fact, I could convince myself it was worse on a few times.
[21:48] <GW8RAK> The theroretical difference between a horizontal aerial and a vertical signal is 20dB.
[21:49] <GW8RAK> Unfortunately, my yagi is too big to mount with vertical polarisation.
[21:50] <fsphil> shame, that would have been fairly epic for it
[21:50] <GW8RAK> Yes, for normal amateur 70cms SSB and satellite work (circularly polarised) it is a good aerial.
[21:51] <fsphil> I was looking at getting a second 10el and stack along with the one I have
[21:51] <fsphil> supposedly will add 2db gain
[21:52] <GW8RAK> The problem with vertically polarised yagis is that the support mast detunes the aerial and can reduce performance considerably.
[21:53] <fsphil> yea, they need to be held out to one side
[21:53] <GW8RAK> So I'm looking for a 70cm yagi I can mount at one end only, rather than centally.
[21:53] <GW8RAK> A second phased yagi should give you an extra 3dB
[21:54] <fsphil> your 21el, is it steerable? I'm guessing yea for satellite

[21:55] <fsphil> pvc pipe
[21:55] <GW8RAK> Yes, in azimuth, but not yet in elevation. I was going to build an elevating mechanism, but then acquired a commercial AZ/EL rotator. Mains powered, so it will steer just about anything.
[21:56] <LazyLeopard> Cool!
[21:56] <Lunar_Lander> yay
[21:56] <GW8RAK> Wood is an easy to use material.
[21:56] <Lunar_Lander> yes and many people don't know that
[21:56] <Lunar_Lander> or are like "Oh wood is childish/unprofessional"

[21:57] <Lunar_Lander> so it's got enough power?
[21:57] <GW8RAK> More than I'll ever need.
[21:58] <GW8RAK> Ultimately for satellite work, I'll get a 70cm crossed yagi and pair it up with the crossed 2m one I have.
[21:58] <juxta> morning all
[21:58] <GW8RAK> They'll be mounted at 45 degrees to prevent the support detuning them too much.
