[13:49] <edmoore> afternoon everone
[14:18] <rjharrison> hi edmoore
[14:18] <rjharrison> DIscovered floating point in avr s/w based
[14:18] <edmoore> oh yes
[14:18] <edmoore> it will be on alsmot everything you use
[14:19] <edmoore> until you start getting into high end ARM9s or similar, like DSPs
[14:19] <SpeedEvil> fixed point++
[14:19] <edmoore> FPUs (floating point units) are expensive, from a silicon point of view, and almost always start at 32bit

[14:20] <mc_-> afternoon edmoore
[14:20] <edmoore> ello

[14:22] <edmoore> not bad, just catching a couple of days at home before starting summer work in cam.

[14:23] <mc_-> im coming to camb soon
[14:23] <mc_-> i work for a camb company now
[14:24] <mc_-> am going to start launching now
[14:24] <edmoore> oh awesome
[14:24] <mc_-> make up for lost time
[14:24] <edmoore> am I allowed to ask where?

[16:14] <edmoore_> hi jcoxon
[16:17] <jcoxon> hey edmoore_
[16:19] <jcoxon> hows tricks?
[16:31] <jcoxon> i have to admit SIRF GPS chipsets are really quite good
[16:58] <edmoore_> jcoxon: sorry, window got burried
[16:58] <edmoore_> what makes you say that?
[16:58] Nick change: edmoore_ -> edmoore
[16:59] <jcoxon> just powered up an old sirf II gps module
[16:59] <jcoxon> and it got a lock in doors pretty damn quickly
[17:02] <edmoore> cool
[17:02] <jcoxon> that said since i restarted it it isn't doing as well :-)
[17:02] <edmoore> do the sirf iis go up to the top?
[17:03] <jcoxon> no they are limited as wekk
[17:03] <jcoxon> well*
[17:03] <jcoxon> but i'm a little tempted to use it on the floater
[17:03] <jcoxon> as its pretty much disposable now
[17:04] <edmoore> uhuh
[17:04] <edmoore> is a disposable floater part of the schedule?
[17:04] <jcoxon> though its the 18km limit not the 24km
[17:04] <jcoxon> edmoore, no but i'm preparing for all eventuallities
[17:04] <jcoxon> as in i wouldn't risk a gumstix
[17:04] <edmoore> for sure, yeah
[17:05] <edmoore> I guess that's why you've got that nice new board
[17:05] <edmoore> how many did you get?
[17:05] <jcoxon> only 2
[17:05] <jcoxon> i need to resize it a bit more to maximise the number i can get
[17:06] <edmoore> if it works, you could always try smd
[17:13] <jcoxon> yeah its an option
[17:18] <edmoore> manifest
[17:18] <edmoore> that's the word I was after
[17:18] <edmoore> launch manifest
[17:18] <edmoore> not launch schedule
[17:19] <jcoxon> hehe
[17:20] <jcoxon> the plan for the first launch is a latex balloon with a 1/16th vent
[17:20] <jcoxon> and a simple payload of gps, atmega168 and radio
[17:21] <jcoxon> in an attempt to sort of field test a 'vent' and work out if 1/16th inch vent is appropriate
[17:22] <jcoxon> for recovery they'll be a cutdown based on either distance travelled or polygon
[17:23] <jcoxon> i guess with that flight plan i'll need to use a unlimited gps
[17:37] <edmoore> sure
[17:38] <edmoore> will listen for it, obviously
[17:38] <jcoxon> ;-)

[18:08] <jcoxon> hello
[18:09] <mc-> I'll send it on google chat
[18:09] <jcoxon> send what?
[18:10] <mc-> some firmware
[18:10] <jcoxon> hmmmm
[18:10] <jcoxon> its okay
[18:13] <jcoxon> i've got 2 ublox modules
[18:14] edmoore (n=ed@88-202-192-1.rdns.as8401.net) left irc:
[18:16] <mc-> I'm going to do some flights which I don't bother to chase. GPS modules are so cheap now
[18:20] <jcoxon> hehe, wouldn't say they were cheap enough to lose
[18:20] <mc-> you can buy GPS modules on ebay for 10pounds or less
[18:21] <jcoxon> but its not just the gps
[18:21] <jcoxon> radio adds to the cost
[18:24] <mc-> I've got some 5 pound radio modules
[18:24] <jcoxon> fair enough
[18:24] <jcoxon> i'm going to stick to my retrievable payloads
[18:25] <jcoxon> well thats the aim, the sea has a habit of swallowing them
[18:26] <mc-> a floater is likely to go a long way anyway
[18:26] <mc-> is it worth the petrol costs to retreive it?
[18:27] <jcoxon> yes, as alot of the fun of balloon is the retrival
[18:28] <mc-> well, I might retreive it if it's not too far..
