[14:38] <fergusnoble> edmoore: d'ya get the mould closed up last night?
[14:39] <edmoore> yep it's in the oven
[14:39] <fergusnoble> cool
[14:39] <edmoore> and cookin
[14:39] <fergusnoble> what about the bulkhead?
[14:39] <edmoore> iain told me that the pressure seal in the bulkhead experiment seems to have failed
[14:39] <fergusnoble> ok, not suprising
[14:39] <edmoore> the vacuum pump is just sucking air through
[14:40] <fergusnoble> the vac bagging film isnt quite rated for the temp and the seal was dodgy anyway
[14:40] <fergusnoble> going to have to have a think about another method
[14:40] <fergusnoble> its rediculously fiddly to do the current way
[14:40] <edmoore> yup
[14:41] <edmoore> didn't have much fun making up the bag for the other end
[14:41] <edmoore> nor the bulkhead itself either - or at least inserting it up to the bulkhead foam. It would be good to do only one insertion operation for the entire subassembly next time, if that's possible
[14:42] <fergusnoble> yeah, well we could make it up as an insert, i.e. cure it outside the body and then glue it in
[14:42] <edmoore> yeah
[14:42] <edmoore> that sounds sensible
[14:42] <fergusnoble> but i dont much like that idea
[14:42] <fergusnoble> i think it would be hard to glue in properly and even harder to make it a good fit
[14:43] <edmoore> i think it'll have to all be constructed on some jig (maybe an expanding mandrel?) that we insert into the tube, then expand
[14:44] <edmoore> 'have to' is too strong for that, it's just a half-thought
[14:44] <fergusnoble> yeah i think we can lay the carbon up inside ok using a jig
[14:44] <fergusnoble> but the bagging is going to have to be changed a bit
[14:45] <fergusnoble> you can get more stretchy materials for bagging which would be better
[14:45] <edmoore> that's why I'm thinking maybe a mandrel of sorts, though it would only apply radial pressure, not longitudinal
[14:46] <fergusnoble> how would it apply pressure? by being flexible and blown up with compressed air?
[14:47] <edmoore> normally they are a rubber cylinder with a small hole down the middle
[14:47] <SpeedEvil> Vacuum bagging over a mandrel is an alternative.
[14:47] <SpeedEvil> Though not as much pressure of course.
[14:47] <edmoore> in the hole runs a screw
[14:48] <edmoore> you tighten the screw and it compresses the rubber
[14:48] <edmoore> and applies radial pressure
[14:48] <edmoore> if you've used a dremel, it's the principle used for the little sanding cylindrical bits
[14:48] <fergusnoble> yeah you could do something like that
[14:48] <SpeedEvil> You can cast large blocks of acetoxy cure silicone sealant by adding a damp metal oxide.
[14:48] <SpeedEvil> If you use bicarbonate, then you get a foam
[14:49] <SpeedEvil> I've used it in the past for making moulds.
[14:49] <SpeedEvil> which work to high temperature.
[14:49] <SpeedEvil> (though I was casting concrete at ~100C, not resin)
[14:50] <edmoore> going to have a power nap, bit of admin, than off to a lecture
[14:50] <edmoore> napping is the way forward
[14:50] <fergusnoble> SpeedEvil: sounds good, were using casting silicone for making the pressure bladder for moulding the rocky body already
[14:50] <edmoore> rocky :)
[14:50] <fergusnoble> so it can deffo take the heat
[14:50] <fergusnoble> rocket
[14:50] <SpeedEvil> fergusnoble: Discovered this after looking at the price of two-part, compared to the price from LiDl of sealant tubes :)
