[17:03] <fergusnoble> hello all
[17:03] <edmoore> ok?
[17:03] <edmoore> hi fergusnoble
[17:03] <EI5GTB> hello
[17:03] <fergusnoble> edmoore: just starting making up the weld-o-tron controller
[17:03] <edmoore> cool - how long till she rolls?
[17:04] <fergusnoble> probably a while
[17:04] <fergusnoble> hopefully should have something by tomorrow
[17:05] <edmoore> grand
[17:12] hallam (n=hallam@natreg.pem.cam.ac.uk) joined #highaltitude.
[17:27] <edmoore> hi henry
[17:28] <edmoore> hallam*
[17:28] <hallam> it's okay, I think we're on a first name basis by now
[17:28] <edmoore> but henry doesn't make your client ping happily
[17:30] <edmoore> Hobble Yaw control can probably be done, I think, with gyros
[17:33] <hallam> how about az/el?
[17:33] <hallam> well, just el I guess
[17:33] <edmoore> may try and build it as an equitorial mount, for one
[17:34] <hallam> it's probably worth looking into how the big boys do it, because scope on a balloon has definitely been done
[17:34] <edmoore> but probably just actuators, a use a control system to damp out the rocking of the rest of the gondola
[17:34] <edmoore> well, a lot of the big boys don't actually try narrow field stuff
[17:35] <hallam> I thought you wanted wide field?
[17:35] <edmoore> they trust track their drift and reconstruct, which is fine for studies of the sun, and stuff
[17:35] <edmoore> but not so good for astrophotography
[17:35] <edmoore> I want as narrow as I can achieve - the moon, andromeda, orion's belt, pleaides etc
[17:36] <edmoore> the nice thing about the yaw gyro is, if i can get power to it somehow, it won't saturate
[17:36] <hallam> wait, why won't it saturate?
[17:36] <edmoore> but even if i have to limit its range, it should still have a pretty huge range
[17:37] <edmoore> well, we can easily generate torques way in excess of what it might encounter as outside disturbances
[17:37] <hallam> but
[17:37] <edmoore> and for a given torque, you only need to spin it at a given angular rate
[17:37] <hallam> hold on, is this a control moment gyro or a reaction wheel?
[17:38] <edmoore> cmg
[17:38] <hallam> ok
[17:38] <edmoore> like i said *
[17:38] <edmoore> ^
[17:38] <edmoore> well, i just said gyro, unhelfully
[17:38] <hallam> sorry, I had reaction wheels on the brain
[17:38] <edmoore> CMG seems to be the happy solution
[17:39] <edmoore> though need to check it won't, in certain orientations, cause precession thanks to other control inputs doing their thing
[17:40] <edmoore> maybe can put the entire scope in a cardan suspension with orthogonal CMGs
[17:40] <edmoore> gets more complex though
[17:45] <edmoore> no, actually I like that idea.
[17:46] <edmoore> sorry, I'm having an idea monologue in the style of a certain other person
[17:46] <hallam> well, I'm sure you'll figure it out

[17:49] <hallam> I'm sure you can knock that up in a couple of hours in the machine shop
[17:49] <hallam> :P
[17:49] <edmoore> .wmv.exe
[17:50] <edmoore> that's not the best file extension ever
