[00:23] <robert1971> edmoore: Tired, AVR working nicely.
[00:23] <edmoore> big tick
[00:23] <robert1971> What time do you want launch on Thursday
[00:23] <robert1971> I'd say about 8pm ish
[00:25] <robert1971> bed here i come

[00:45] <Laurenceb_> anyone used bootloaders on avr here?
[00:45] <Laurenceb_> I'm just completely stuck
[00:45] <SpeedEvil> What on?
[00:45] <Laurenceb_> I cant get my bootloader to work even on breadboard now :(
[00:45] <Laurenceb_> I dont understand
[00:45] <SpeedEvil> It doesn't talk?
[00:46] <Laurenceb_> well there is data on both serial lines
[00:46] <SpeedEvil> Might you have overwritten it?
[00:46] <Laurenceb_> no I've tried wiping everything and reflashing over spi
[00:46] <Laurenceb_> it all seems to be working fine
[00:46] <SpeedEvil> Flow control problems on the PC?
[00:46] <Laurenceb_> then the bootloader is just unresponsive
[00:46] <Laurenceb_> maybe
[00:47] <Laurenceb_> look in device manager?
[00:47] <SpeedEvil> Try bridging pins 2-3 on the RS232 port, and seeing if you get back what you type
[00:47] <Laurenceb_> its usb
[00:47] <Laurenceb_> usb to 3.3v serial
[00:47] <SpeedEvil> it's not serial on the far end?
[00:47] <SpeedEvil> well - TX/RX
[00:47] <Laurenceb_> cypress something or other ic
[00:48] <Laurenceb_> ok good plan
[00:49] <Laurenceb_> yeah it works
[00:49] <Laurenceb_> copies back characters no problem
[00:50] <SpeedEvil> Well - that eliminates one thing.
[00:50] <SpeedEvil> The other possibilities are you've got the wrong baud-rate or settings on the AVR
[00:50] <Laurenceb_> hmm maybe
[00:50] <Laurenceb_> I've just tried the noob guide here : http://www.societyofrobots.com/bootloader_50_robot.shtml
[00:50] <Laurenceb_> but no luck
[00:50] <SpeedEvil> Or the clock is at the wrong frequency, causing the baud rate to be wrong. If it's 10% out, it always won't sync
[00:51] <Laurenceb_> true
[00:51] <SpeedEvil> Got scope?
[00:51] <Laurenceb_> no
[00:51] <Laurenceb_> but my multimeter is detecting data on tx and rx
[00:51] <SpeedEvil> detecting how?
[00:51] <Laurenceb_> when I try to talk to the bootloader
[00:51] <Laurenceb_> fluctuating voltage
[00:52] <SpeedEvil> will the bootloader respond if you just send garbage?
[00:52] <Laurenceb_> no
[00:52] <Laurenceb_> it looks for a password
[00:52] <SpeedEvil> hmm
[00:53] <Laurenceb_> I guess my best bet is to try that step by step guide once more being extremely careful to wipe it all first and follow it by the letter
[00:53] <Laurenceb_> I'll download a fresh copy as well :P
[00:56] <Laurenceb_> oh well whats the point
[00:56] <Laurenceb_> I'm going to bed

[13:14] <jcoxon> hey all
[13:21] <gordonjcp> hi
[13:26] <jcoxon> doing my beacon launch on sunday
[13:27] <jcoxon> gordonjcp, though i have a feeling that you won't be able to hear it!
[13:28] <gordonjcp> jcoxon: well, I've got a 5-ele yagi now
[13:28] <jcoxon> oooooo, then maybe!
[13:28] <gordonjcp> I can try and build a really long yagi before then
[13:28] <gordonjcp> what sort of height are you aiming for?
[13:28] <jcoxon> hmmmm, its only a beacon on a 200g (or maybe 350g) balloon so 20km +
[13:30] <jcoxon> gordonjcp, what do you reckon would be the best attenna on the payload?
[13:32] <gordonjcp> probably a dipole
[13:32] <gordonjcp> or a ground-plane antenna of some sort - the ground-plane antenna will tend to direct the signal down more
[13:32] <jcoxon> yeah
[13:33] <jcoxon> the problem about that is that when it lands you pretty much lose the signal
[13:33] <jcoxon> how about a dipole, the postive element pointing up, the ground down
[13:33] <jcoxon> then when it lands it'll crush the ground element but still have the other one poking up
[13:34] <jcoxon> urgh - a dipole would have to be matched
[14:00] <gordonjcp> crossed folded dipoles
[14:01] <gordonjcp> ideally what you want is something with its low impedance end at the end, not the tip
