[00:03] <hallam> hey Laurence
[00:03] <hallam> what's new?
[00:06] <Laurenceb> not a lot
[00:06] <Laurenceb> revising for finals
[00:06] <Laurenceb> hows life at MIT ?
[00:07] <Laurenceb> when do you graduate?
[00:13] edmoore (n=edmoore@pomegranate.chu.cam.ac.uk) left irc:
[00:40] <hallam> I don't have any finals, all my projects were due last week
[00:40] <hallam> going to work on visual navigation over the summer
[00:40] <hallam> back to Cambridge in September, graduate next June
[00:41] <Laurenceb> nice
[00:41] <Laurenceb> visual navigation sounds interesting
[00:42] <Laurenceb> My finals are in just over 3 weeks
[00:43] <Laurenceb> I've got a few projects planned for the summer.... maybe a guided parafoil
[00:45] <Laurenceb> hopefully I'll be starting a phd studentship in October... not sure yet
[00:49] <hallam> good luck with that
[00:49] <Laurenceb> thanx
[00:51] <Laurenceb> its at sstl in guildford, they want a first which I'm not sure I can manage... hopefully a good 2-1 will suffice
[01:14] <Laurenceb> I really want to get an guided payload working this summer
[01:15] <hallam> oh sweet, SSTL are pretty cool - I hope EADS don't ruin them
[01:15] <Laurenceb> it looked very impressive
[01:16] <Laurenceb> I'd be working on galileo, I ordered one of the SiGe samplers from sparkfun to have a play with
[01:19] <hallam> nice, maybe you can get us something that'll break the altitude limit ;)
[01:19] <Laurenceb> then I'll get abducted by the cia/iran
[01:19] <Laurenceb> :P
[01:19] <Laurenceb> tried launching this over christmas http://wiki.ukhas.org.uk/projects:ukhas_glider_project:airframe
[01:20] <Laurenceb> annoyingly the power supply failed even though the electronics seemed to be doing the job
[01:20] Tigga (n=chatzill@pc-232-235-60.magd.cam.ac.uk) left irc: Read error: 110 (Connection timed out)
[01:21] <Laurenceb> I think it got to cold, it was -20 and the smps was rated to 0c
[02:01] <hallam> that blows, yeah a bunch of ceramic capacitors really don't like the cold
[02:03] <hallam> make sure the dielectric type begins with X and doesn't end with U or V
[02:03] <Laurenceb> hmm
[02:03] <hallam> X7R is good, Y5V is badddd
[02:04] <Laurenceb> ok thanks
[02:04] <Laurenceb> but I'm thinking it was the IC
[02:04] <Laurenceb> thats where I got the 0c rating
[02:04] <hallam> which IC?
[02:05] <Laurenceb> hmmm
[02:05] <Laurenceb> it was a board from sparkfun, cant remember offhand
[02:07] <Laurenceb> it was epoxied to the side of the enclosure, and the whole thing seemed to start intermittently losing power shortly after cutdown, I suspect it just got too cold
[02:08] <Laurenceb> RocketBoy made a PIC powered datalogger for it, but amost all the data got wiped
[02:08] <hallam> pity
[02:09] <Laurenceb> and the radio was acting crazy, very luckly it restarted a few hundered feet off the ground and we got the landing position
[02:09] <hallam> oh well I have to go tidy
[02:09] <Laurenceb> cya, good talking to you
[02:09] <hallam> see you later

[22:01] <edmoore> we are soldering
[22:03] <jcoxon> oooo cool

[23:03] <gerard_mp> hi?
[23:03] <jcoxon> hi gerard_mp
[23:03] <gerard_mp> hi jcoxon
[23:04] <gerard_mp> I would like to ask one question for my ballon project (http://flickr.com/photos/meteotek08)
[23:04] <jcoxon> go for it
[23:04] <gerard_mp> It is related with cutdown device
[23:04] <gerard_mp> where I could get a good igniter (or at least how to make one)?
[23:05] <jcoxon> well they are based on model rocket ignitors
[23:05] <jcoxon> where are you based?
[23:05] <gerard_mp> Spain, near Barcelona
[23:05] <jcoxon> okay
[23:05] <jcoxon> umm well what people have done is use a rocket ignitor
[23:06] <jcoxon> in a small perpex tube, epoxied at each end
[23:06] <gerard_mp> but how I could make an ignitor?
[23:06] <jcoxon> http://wiki.ukhas.org.uk/ideas:flight_support
[23:06] <gerard_mp> I've found this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006MZTHQ?smid=A2UOKAHRLWY15W&tag=nextag-toys-mp-20&linkCode=asn
[23:06] <jcoxon> you'd best buy one
[23:06] <gerard_mp> but I'm not sure if it's okay for my purposes...
[23:07] <jcoxon> i'm not sure
[23:07] <jcoxon> edmoore, can you help?
[23:08] <gerard_mp> he seems to be out hehe
[23:09] <jcoxon> i don't make the cutdowns :-)
[23:09] <gerard_mp> hehe
[23:09] <edmoore> hi
[23:09] <gerard_mp> hi edmoore
[23:09] <jcoxon> suitable ignitors for a cutdown?
[23:09] <edmoore> are you desperate to make your own?
[23:09] <edmoore> it is probably recommended to buy them from a model rocketry vendor
[23:09] <gerard_mp> well, I'd like to buy one already made
[23:10] <edmoore> if you can find a model shop which sells model rockets, they shoud have ignitors
[23:10] <gerard_mp> do you know of any realiable vendor?
[23:11] <edmoore> well in the UK I often use 'Rockets & Things'
[23:11] <edmoore> however RocketBoy uses someone cheaper _ I forget the name
[23:11] <edmoore> but I can find out
[23:11] <edmoore> sorry I have to go
[23:11] <edmoore> bbl
[23:11] edmoore (n=edmoore@fn217.quns.cam.ac.uk) left irc:
[23:12] <jcoxon> gerard_mp, so any shop that sells model rockets
[23:12] <gerard_mp> ok, let me take a look
[23:12] <gerard_mp> ok, here it is: http://www.rocketsandthings.com/view/category/?c=52
[23:13] <jcoxon> yup
[23:14] <jcoxon> that them

[23:43] <Laurenceb> not so bad...
[23:44] <Laurenceb> getting confused by group delay dispersion...
[23:45] <edmoore> can't help ya there
