[15:52] <Laurenceb> hi all
[15:52] <prpplague> Laurenceb: greetings
[15:52] <Laurenceb> hi
[15:53] <prpplague> Laurenceb: http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2008/02/how_to_build_a_thermal_te.html
[15:53] <Laurenceb> cool thanx
[15:53] <Laurenceb> might be doing that next week
[15:53] <Laurenceb> I'm getting annoyed by this pressure sensor
[15:54] <Laurenceb> the pump causes the pressure across the filter to fluctuate all over the place
[15:54] flowolf (n=flowolf@79.3.234.254) joined #highaltitude.
[15:54] <Laurenceb> and low pass filtering isnt a brilliant solution
[15:56] <Laurenceb> the good news is everything seems to be working and talking ok
[15:56] <Laurenceb> just the phone to go on now
[15:56] <jcoxon> hey Laurenceb
[15:57] <jcoxon> sounds like it going well then
[15:57] <Laurenceb> it looks a mess but yes
[15:57] <prpplague> good deal
[15:57] <Laurenceb> there are cables everywhere :P
[15:58] <Laurenceb> for some reason my supervisor has decided to go home and work on his rally car :S
[15:58] <jcoxon> hehe
[15:58] <jcoxon> i've just got back
[15:58] <prpplague> i'd just as soon go to the pub
[15:59] <jcoxon> going to stick my Sharp IR sensor on to my robosapien
[15:59] <Laurenceb> arggg I just dropped a bolt into the HV supply unit :(
[15:59] <jcoxon> then sort out the code to make him avoid obstacles and let him wander round hte flat
[15:59] <prpplague> jcoxon: you hack a different cpu into it?
[15:59] <jcoxon> yeah
[15:59] <prpplague> Laurenceb: smoked?
[16:00] <prpplague> jcoxon: what cpu?
[16:00] <Laurenceb> its all turned off
[16:00] <prpplague> Laurenceb: oh good
[16:00] <Laurenceb> but now it has to be dismantled to get it out
[16:00] <jcoxon> its being piggybacked with an arduino
[16:00] <prpplague> jcoxon: ahh
[16:00] <jcoxon> i hate HV supplies - nearly killed myself with the 37.5Kv in my projector
[16:00] <prpplague> jcoxon: i've wanted to get one of those robosapiens and hack it up with a hammer module
[16:01] <jcoxon> that would be cool
[16:01] <prpplague> jcoxon: yea, i had a crt discharge on my once, thought i was gonna die
[16:01] <jcoxon> all the arduino is doing is interfacing to the robot, the digital compass and range finder and sending it all back over a radio modem
[16:01] <jcoxon> got to love the old school 3 crt tube projectors
[16:01] <jcoxon> got it for ?50 off ebay -repaired it
[16:02] <jcoxon> its still as good as most projectors on the market
[16:02] Action: Laurenceb fiddles with cables tangling all over his desk
[16:03] <Laurenceb> I remember when I was about 4 and they were cool :P
[16:04] <jcoxon> they still are
[16:04] <jcoxon> well i think they are
[16:04] <jcoxon> and i'm not going to complain for ?50
[16:04] <jcoxon> for a near HD projector
[16:04] <Laurenceb> :P
[16:08] <Laurenceb> whep finally got it out
[16:10] <Laurenceb> right back to ssh, theres only one lan socket on here
[16:11] <Laurenceb> then i'll be heading home, but I might be back later, cya

[16:18] <Laurenceb> success :D
[16:18] <Laurenceb> the HV supplies work and theres an ionisation current
[16:18] <Laurenceb> just need to clean up the pressure metering
[16:19] <Laurenceb> photos in 5

[16:48] <jcoxon> oh crap
[16:48] <edmoore> hi jcoxon
[16:48] <prpplague> edmoore: doh
[16:48] <edmoore> still, prpplague, not quite a pub crawl this evening, but 'half way hall' which is a formal dress by slightly boozey evening meal for my year to celebrate being half way through our degrees
[16:49] <edmoore> I hope the police have come and gone by then, though

[17:45] <prpplague> Laurenceb: greetings
[17:47] <Laurenceb> that was quite a productive day :p
[17:48] <Laurenceb> I got an ioniser current of 0.15uA, the target is a little under 1uA, but thats with the SEM targets fitted, which decreases the electrode seperation
[17:50] <Laurenceb> http://wiki.ukhas.org.uk/_media/projects:dscn0998.jpg just the batteries and phone to go on the middle shelf
[17:54] <Laurenceb> theres a company in Manchester making the SEM targets, they will be gold plated and have an attachment on the bottom so they can easily be loaded into the SEM

[22:59] <Laurenceb> hello again
[23:00] <natrium42> hey Laurenceb
[23:00] <Laurenceb> I've been watching this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119079/
[23:00] <Laurenceb> dont get it :( its like the scriptwriters couldn't make up their minds where it was going
[23:01] <natrium42> i don't remember watching that version
[23:02] <Laurenceb> you've seen it?
[23:02] <natrium42> not that version i think
[23:02] <Laurenceb> ok
[23:02] <Laurenceb> this version was... well pretty bad
[23:02] <natrium42> it's hollywood :P
[23:03] <natrium42> btw, i put my robot back online --> http://natrium42.com/robot/
[23:03] <Laurenceb> it was all over the place, and had the impression of a very disjointed/non-existent plot
[23:03] <Laurenceb> cool, taking a look
[23:03] <natrium42> left view doesn't work since i broke my camera on halo1 :P
[23:04] <Laurenceb> ooh works in ubuntu :P
[23:04] <natrium42> of course
[23:04] <natrium42> it's flash and javascript
[23:04] <Laurenceb> is it working?
[23:04] <natrium42> you can switch between two cameras using Top/FP
[23:04] <Laurenceb> the view isnt changing...
[23:04] <natrium42> looks like you timed out or something
[23:05] <natrium42> try reconnecting
[23:05] <Laurenceb> hmm the page seems to have died :P
[23:06] <natrium42> perhaps my webhost is being slow again
[23:06] <Laurenceb> ah I'm not seeing the live stream
[23:07] <Laurenceb> I'm using gnash
[23:07] <natrium42> aah, i don't know whether gnash works
[23:07] <natrium42> i am using the official flash player on ubuntu
[23:07] <Laurenceb> 32bit?
[23:07] <natrium42> yep
[23:07] <Laurenceb> ah I'm using 64
[23:07] <natrium42> i see :P
[23:08] <natrium42> stupid adobe
[23:08] <Laurenceb> how often does the snapshot update?
[23:08] <Laurenceb> it doesnt seem to have moved...
[23:08] <natrium42> you mean the one on the left?
[23:09] <Laurenceb> yes
[23:09] <natrium42> that camera is broken
[23:09] <Laurenceb> lol ok
[23:09] <natrium42> so it doesn't update :P
[23:09] <natrium42> only two cameras work atm
[23:09] <Laurenceb> oh well has it moved?
[23:09] <natrium42> one on the bot and one webcam
[23:09] <natrium42> it works for me
[23:09] <Laurenceb> cool
[23:10] <Laurenceb> looks like I'd need a decent flash player to test it
[23:10] <natrium42> i wanted to buy another of those old canon cameras
[23:10] <natrium42> but local shops don't carry them anymore :(
[23:10] <Laurenceb> but impressive work :D
[23:10] <natrium42> only those lame 7MP and 8MP cams
[23:11] <natrium42> ebay to the rescue?
[23:12] <natrium42> hmm, interesting --> http://cgi.ebay.com/DICAPAC-WP500-Canon-Powershot-A510-A520-A530-A540-A550_W0QQitemZ330213056412QQihZ014QQcategoryZ50506QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
[23:13] <natrium42> could fill it with polyurethane for cold protection
[23:13] <Laurenceb> nice
[23:14] <Laurenceb> what happened to the ukhas front page? first the wiki link moved to the right of the menu bar, now the menu bar isnt aligned correctly
[23:15] <natrium42> looks fine to me
[23:15] <natrium42> perhaps jcoxon changed the design a bit?
[23:16] <Laurenceb> jcoxon: are you running the site now?
[23:16] <natrium42> oh, he was not?
[23:16] <Laurenceb> phatmonkey was
[23:17] <natrium42> aah, i see
[23:17] <natrium42> just ignore me then :)
[23:17] <Laurenceb> ooh you can drag a URL onto the taskbar
[23:17] <Laurenceb> linux is cool
[23:18] <Laurenceb> or "panel" as it seems to be called
[23:19] <Laurenceb> hmm I need a way to solve the pressure sensor problems... the output oscillates all over the place
[23:19] <natrium42> noise?
[23:19] <Laurenceb> no, its from the pump
[23:19] <Laurenceb> I thought it was EMI yesterday, so this morning I made a new preamp
[23:20] <Laurenceb> but it seems noise was only a small part of the problem, and the pump is causing acoustic noise in the pipes
[23:20] <Laurenceb> thats confusing the pressure sensor
[23:20] <Laurenceb> the output oscillates +-10%
[23:22] <Laurenceb> the control loop works up to about 50% of the design range, then the sensor output appears to sync with the interrupt on the AVR and it goes mad
[23:23] <Laurenceb> theres three solutions, 1) plumbing based 2) analogue filtering 3) digital filtering on avr
[23:27] <Laurenceb> I prefer analogue filtering
[23:28] <Laurenceb> have you seen the latest photos?
[23:35] <Laurenceb> I've got a photo of one of the wind sensors: http://imagebin.ca/view/e3uevh.html
[23:40] <natrium42> cool
[23:40] <natrium42> is it ultrasonic?
[23:42] <Laurenceb> no, its resistance based
[23:42] <Laurenceb> that top is a plastic foam tube with kapton film wrapped round
[23:43] <Laurenceb> that heated with a current of a few ma, then the resistance changes with temperature, theres an opamp circuit that keeps the resistance constant
[23:44] <Laurenceb> and the current is related to wind and atmospheric temperature, theres three elements, so it gives you wind direction, speed, and temperature
[23:45] <Laurenceb> that thing is about 3mm long !
[23:47] <Laurenceb> its going on the top of exomars, theres another guy working on the electronics, but thats on a breadboard at the moment, they're testing it in a windtunnel
[23:49] <Laurenceb> the flight version of the tronics will use gold bonded bare die opamps from AD on a ceramic substrate, in a little gold and indium carrier soldered on the bottom of there
