[17:35] <LaurenceB> Hi henry
[17:36] <LaurenceB> Just ordered a rather expensive multiturn pot off rapid to discover you can get "winch servos" for model boats, which means I just wasted my money :(
[17:38] <LaurenceB> Plan is to fit a servo operated winch inside a payload under a rogallo to shift the c of g
[17:49] <hmh33> hehe, neat
[17:49] <hmh33> yes those multiturn pots are annoyingly expensive, I had to buy one to replace one on the control panel for a HV supply that I broke by trying to drive it with a motor
[17:49] <LaurenceB> keeps it warm and is nice and small
[17:50] <LaurenceB> want one? lol
[17:50] <hmh33> nah thanks it works now :P
[17:50] <hmh33> James, are you still in Cambridge?
[17:50] <hmh33> Laurence, would you like to come to our launch on Saturday?
[17:50] <LaurenceB> Just reflashed my GPS
[17:51] <LaurenceB> erm... not sure how much money I've got
[17:51] <LaurenceB> trains cost more than winch servos!
[17:52] <jcoxon> hmh33, i'm still here
[17:52] <LaurenceB> If I came I'd try and have a rogallo to test and then it would be worthwhile
[17:52] <jcoxon> but won't be around on saturday
[17:52] <hmh33> okay
[17:52] <jcoxon> going home at the end of the week
[17:52] <LaurenceB> oh sorry whats happening on saturday? tethered launch?
[17:52] <hmh33> Laurence, I'm not sure we can support a rogallo test
[17:52] <hmh33> nope, high altitude mini-rocket launch
[17:53] <LaurenceB> oh doh
[17:53] <hmh33> in front of public+kids ("national science week")
[17:53] <LaurenceB> sound good
[17:53] <LaurenceB> just unguided I presume?
[17:53] <hmh33> James, make sure I give you your gumstix back then, we decided not to do the camera downlink
[17:53] <hmh33> yep
[17:53] <LaurenceB> filming it flom the payload?
[17:53] <hmh33> yeah
[17:53] <LaurenceB> -from
[17:53] <LaurenceB> cool neat
[17:53] <hmh33> with the nice V2 checkerboard pattern painted on the rocket
[17:54] <hmh33> except in fluorescent pink and yellow so maybe someone will find it
[17:54] <LaurenceB> erm just thought, are you making sure it doesnt spray muck on the lens?
[17:54] <hmh33> there should be some shielding from the flash
[17:55] <hmh33> and the plume to some extent
[17:55] <LaurenceB> those solid motors really gunk up the launchpad
[17:56] <hmh33> hm
[17:56] <hmh33> well, not really sure how much we can do about it
[17:56] <hmh33> the camera is fairly far away from it
[17:56] <LaurenceB> have you done any aerodynamics?
[17:56] <hmh33> only a little
[17:57] <LaurenceB> so what sort of "launch pole" is it using?
[17:57] <hmh33> the acceleration should be at least comparable to the big rocket
[17:57] <hmh33> it's using a tube
[17:57] <hmh33> cannon-type
[17:57] <LaurenceB> sounds good
[17:57] <LaurenceB> Have you seen the helium valve I've put up on the wiki?
[17:59] <LaurenceB> that could be used to combine a payload and glider, overinflate the balloon to lift the glider, releae it at say 10000ft then vent some helium to get up to high altitude
[18:01] <LaurenceB> If you had a camcorder on the payload and a 2.4GHz camera on the rocket, you could record the view from the rocket onboard the payload
[18:01] <LaurenceB> use 2.4 ghz reciever and camcorder with s-video input
[18:04] <LaurenceB> hack the camcorder to take some nice footage on the way up then switch over to s-video
[18:09] <LaurenceB> only problem is the frequencies could drift... but there is a solution to that, you can get carrier dtection chips I think, and I presume that if the tuner module has no signal it doesnt output a proper carrier. tuner mudules take a variable voltage input, so scan through the input voltage until you get a signal before you launch, and stick a yagi on the payload
[18:14] <LaurenceB> got to go cya all

[22:46] <LaurenceB> Hi all
[22:50] <LaurenceB> The wind kind of dropped so I tried some glider flights, smashed the tail off :-(
[22:51] <LaurenceB> it did turn towards the target before crashing tho. But the wind was too gusty and it stalled
[22:54] <LaurenceB> got about 6 seconds of data the geading offset goes like 175,170,120,70,60,50,30 so promising
