[22:31] <jcoxon> rocketboy, just had a meeting with Ed about the parawing etc
[22:31] <_defy> heya :)
[22:32] <icez> howdy _defy
[22:32] <icez> and jcoxon
[22:32] <icez> and Jpantoga :)
[22:33] <jcoxon> hey defy and icez
[22:33] <jcoxon> just getting the info about the nova launch today
[22:34] <_defy> sweet
[22:35] <rocketboy> Hiya Jcoxon - I'd be interested in any news on the parawing - I was at the NOVA recovery
[22:35] <jcoxon> yeah i've heard - it seem to go well
[22:36] <jcoxon> henry is just uploading the video to my webspace
[22:36] <rocketboy> not to bad - a bit of a chute tangle
[22:36] <jcoxon> yeah
[22:36] <jcoxon> good about the radio though
[22:37] <jcoxon> and the cutdown - wow our first successful cutdown :-p
[22:37] <rocketboy> yeah - that went very well
[22:37] <rocketboy> yeah - not sure what they used
[22:37] <jcoxon> right about the parawing (sorry everyone else who has to listen, it might be interesting)
[22:37] <jcoxon> really good chat
[22:37] <jcoxon> lots of ideas
[22:38] <jcoxon> basically nasa parawing is the way to go we reckon
[22:38] <jcoxon> however not sure if the enchanced is best,
[22:38] <rocketboy> i'd agree
[22:38] <jcoxon> on the enchanced version there is the square in hte middle
[22:38] <rocketboy> what the NPW9
[22:38] <jcoxon> i assume to allow for more lift
[22:39] <jcoxon> http://www.xs4all.nl/~pdj/nasaplan.htm
[22:39] <jcoxon> that one
[22:39] <jcoxon> i'm just wondering if we went for the older style which would give more directional control
[22:39] <jcoxon> (well its something to look into)
[22:39] <jcoxon> also we've had some ideas on how to actually steer
[22:40] <jcoxon> hmmm this might be better described in an email
[22:40] <rocketboy> my thoughs are that you need 3 points of attachment - one at the centre front - 2 to breakines at the back that do the steering
[22:41] <jcoxon> yeah
[22:41] <rocketboy> then steering is a matter of pulling 1one breakline while releasing the other
[22:41] <jcoxon> yeah this is where the genius idea comes in
[22:41] <jcoxon> our original thoughts were servos
[22:41] <jcoxon> however
[22:42] <rocketboy> - so actually steering is just an arm - with one servo
[22:42] <jcoxon> howabout linking it like a bridle
[22:42] <jcoxon> and then using a motor to control the position of the cord within the payload
[22:42] <jcoxon> just like how a handglider controls the handglider
[22:43] <jcoxon> this means that we can embed the motor inside
[22:43] <rocketboy> sounds OK
[22:43] <jcoxon> and over come temperature issues
[22:43] <jcoxon> mix this with a gyro with a pic controlling to get some more control
[22:43] <jcoxon> ed is going to draw some stuff to show you
[22:44] <rocketboy> I was thinking of a drive shaft driving a bar (T shape) that attached to the 2 pairs of breaklines
[22:44] <jcoxon> yeah - that was our original thoughts
[22:44] <jcoxon> we felt that this gave us more range of control
[22:45] <jcoxon> as we could spin the motor one way and pull the wing quite a bit in one direction
[22:47] <rocketboy> yep - and depending how much load is on the main lines at the front will determine the load on the brealinnes and hence the "gain" of the turning
[22:47] <rocketboy> gain in how much turn for a given movement of the bar
[22:48] <rocketboy> "gain" as in ...
[23:03] <jcoxon> http://www.ukhas.org.uk/launches/19/nova-4
[23:04] <jcoxon> some videos from todays launch
[23:05] <rocketboy> ta - just sent a picture of the parawing steering idea
[23:05] <jcoxon> ed said he would draw something when he got back to churchill tonight
[23:06] fR (n=FireRabb@216.127.61.152) joined #highaltitude.
[23:06] <jcoxon> evening fR
[23:06] <fR> howdy!
[23:06] <jcoxon> welcome to #highaltitude
[23:07] <fR> thanks, i am finally going back through all the mail on our list and saw your post, thought i'd drop in
[23:07] <jcoxon> rocketboy, we've got 4 pages of random drawings of designs
[23:07] <jcoxon> fR, cool
[23:08] <jcoxon> just the warn the channel goes through stages of activity - so if its quiet just hang around and i'm sure someone will talk :-p
[23:08] <rocketboy> jcoxon - excellent - suggest a net meeting to discuss
[23:08] <jcoxon> yup
[23:08] <jcoxon> sounds like a plan
[23:09] <jcoxon> though for hte mean time Ed and I are going kite flying on sat - going to put together a dropping device off a power kite to start testing ideas etc
[23:10] <jcoxon> oh and Ed's aunt is a seamstress
[23:10] Ebola (n=Ebola@host86-143-156-147.range86-143.btcentralplus.com) left irc: ""Don't let worry kill you -- let the church help.""
[23:10] <jcoxon> might help :-)
[23:12] <rocketboy> excellent
[23:15] <jcoxon> rocketboy, i think the ideas we came up with will make a lot more sense after ed draws them
[23:16] <jcoxon> but it was good to iron out stuff - should really be able to push ahead with this
[23:16] <rocketboy> like the video - shame about the mist
[23:17] <jcoxon> yeah
[23:17] <jcoxon> impact is amusing
[23:18] <rocketboy> yeah - I recognise that field
[23:18] <_defy> nice video, was that recorded locally or sent down somewhere via rf?
[23:19] <jcoxon> recorded onto the camera
[23:19] <jcoxon> and then taken off on retrieval
[23:19] <_defy> sweet
[23:19] <rocketboy> was the colour problem on the 2nd one due to UV - or is it my PC
[23:19] <jcoxon> no there is a colour issue
[23:19] <jcoxon> i reckon uv
[23:19] <jcoxon> however it is facing down
[23:19] <jcoxon> so should get that much UV
[23:20] <rocketboy> reflection from the cloud
[23:20] <rocketboy> any upward pictures?
[23:20] <jcoxon> rocketboy, i'm not sure about upward pics
[23:20] <jcoxon> ooo it landed about 10miles from my house
[23:21] <rocketboy> about 5 mi north or colchester
[23:21] Nick change: fR -> FireRabbit
[23:23] <jcoxon> so FireRabbit are you part of the main team for DXpedition?
[23:25] <rocketboy> CU guys
