[14:30] <jcoxon> hey mc-
[14:30] <jcoxon> wondering if you could help me
[14:31] <jcoxon> trying to power my flight computer with batteries
[14:31] <jcoxon> the problem is that the voltage drops off
[14:32] <jcoxon> to the point where it goes below 5v and the router stops working
[14:36] <mc-> sounds like the batteries can't take the current.
[14:37] <mc-> you're using AA lithiums?
[14:38] <mc-> you could try adding a large cap in parallel with the batt, in case the current is taken in pulses
[14:41] malgar (n=malgar@adsl-ull-102-251.47-151.net24.it) joined #highaltitude.
[14:41] <mc-> I've been trying to do some temperature tests by putting a sensor in the freezer.
[14:41] <mc-> I think standard alkalines will work, if there's thick insulation.
[14:43] <jcoxon> hmmmm alkalines should work
[14:43] <jcoxon> my board produces enough internal heat
[14:43] <jcoxon> how large is a large cap?
[14:44] <mc-> hmm, depends on the current pulses...what have you got? 1000uF?
[14:45] <jcoxon> yeah i've got a 1000uF
[14:45] <jcoxon> the batteries run it for about 20mins
[14:45] <jcoxon> then the voltage drops too low
[14:45] <mc-> can you measure the current?
[14:45] <jcoxon> about to ask
[14:45] <jcoxon> i've got a multimeter
[14:45] <jcoxon> i seem to remember for current
[14:45] <jcoxon> it has to be in series
[14:45] <mc-> yes
[14:46] <jcoxon> so i should run the power line "through" the meter
[14:46] <mc-> yes
[14:46] <jcoxon> okay - i'll set to work :-D
[14:49] <jcoxon> bbiab
[14:59] <mc-> I can't find a link, which shows the current limits of a lithium, but I've read they are designed for low current applications.
[15:00] <jcoxon> these actually weren't lithiums
[15:00] <jcoxon> but if its going to be an issue then its something i'll have to look in to
[15:00] <jcoxon> will bbl as relatives have arrived
[15:00] <mc-> cya

[16:45] <jcoxon> i do it quite a bit
[16:47] <jcoxon> grrr
[16:47] <jcoxon> this router is sucking too much power
