[22:56] <jcoxon_> hey icez
[23:03] <kc0wys> hey
[23:06] <jcoxon_> hey kc0wys
[23:06] <jcoxon_> hows ensure going?
[23:08] <phatmonkey> hey james
[23:08] <phatmonkey> ... better get some sleep though, school tomorrow :/
[23:09] <jcoxon_> :-D
[23:09] <jcoxon_> i'm still battling with these stats
[23:09] <jcoxon_> off to africa on tues so have to hand in all my work before i leave
[23:10] <jcoxon_> going to another late night
[23:10] <phatmonkey> yikes
[23:10] <phatmonkey> i'll install the new version of the wiki sometime too... that bug is annoying
[23:10] <jcoxon_> :-D
[23:10] <jcoxon_> the wiki is growing nicely
[23:10] <jcoxon_> i'll had a few more pages to the glider project tonight
[23:10] <jcoxon_> as a break from working
[23:14] <jcoxon_> hmmm i might submit nomad to hackaday
[23:14] <jcoxon_> do people think its good enough?
[23:15] <phatmonkey> everything from the high altitude slug pages now applies to the new project i suppose
[23:15] <jcoxon_> sort of
[23:16] <jcoxon_> still needs lots of discussion
[23:16] <phatmonkey> yeah
[23:16] Laurenceb (n=Laurence@cpc2-oxfd9-0-0-cust392.oxfd.cable.ntl.com) joined #highaltitude.
[23:16] <jcoxon_> there might be alternative ways to do things
[23:16] <Laurenceb> hi there
[23:16] <Laurenceb> I havent had intrnet recently
[23:16] <jcoxon_> and i'd hate to be trapped to early on (no offence)
[23:16] <jcoxon_> hey Laurenceb
[23:17] <Laurenceb> I'm using wifi from the top of my building
[23:17] <jcoxon_> :-)
[23:17] <Laurenceb> Its very cold
[23:17] <Laurenceb> college internet is a joke
[23:17] <phatmonkey> http://wiki.ukhas.org.uk/projects:high_altitude_slug - added a note
[23:18] <Laurenceb> I'll be off in a few minutes, but I see you are thinking about a glider
[23:18] <jcoxon_> phatmonkey, cool
[23:18] <jcoxon_> Laurenceb yup
[23:18] <jcoxon_> you're very welcome to be part of the team
[23:19] <Laurenceb> I've been working on the flight control software for aglider for a while
[23:19] <jcoxon_> (but its fine if you have another project!)
[23:19] <Laurenceb> I'm now planning on just rudder control
[23:19] <jcoxon_> Laurenceb we are actually thinking of 2 gliders
[23:19] <jcoxon_> pretty much identical base
[23:19] <jcoxon_> allows alternative improvments etc
[23:20] <Laurenceb> sounds interesting
[23:20] <Laurenceb> I've been working on the maths for flight control
[23:21] <Laurenceb> *huge gust of wind*
[23:21] <jcoxon_> oh cool
[23:21] <Laurenceb> sitting on the roof to get wifi was a mad idea
[23:21] <jcoxon_> hehe
[23:21] <jcoxon_> its a cold night!
[23:21] <jcoxon_> its it a negative feedback system?
[23:22] <jcoxon_> your flight control software
[23:22] <Laurenceb> I planned on using a compass but now I think gps will be all thats needed
[23:23] <jcoxon_> oh right
[23:23] <jcoxon_> i've managed to wire up a i2c compass to my gumstix
[23:23] <jcoxon_> it works well
[23:23] <Laurenceb> I then thought of recording wind on the way up, but now think you could get away without even that
[23:23] <Laurenceb> cool how?
[23:24] <jcoxon_> oh it wasn't difficult
[23:24] <jcoxon_> i got an i2c compass from activerobtics i think
[23:24] <jcoxon_> and the gumstix has a i2c bus
[23:24] <jcoxon_> the software required a little modification
[23:25] <Laurenceb> I've just worked out a formula to find wind vector, airspeed vector from three seconds of gps and rudder pos info
[23:25] <jcoxon_> but it was happily sending me data as i rotated it
[23:25] <jcoxon_> Laurenceb, nice - might have to steal the code of you :-p
[23:25] <jcoxon_> hear about Nova 2?
[23:25] <Laurenceb> from that point its possible to find a corrected rudder position to keep you on course
[23:26] <Laurenceb> yes very bad luck for nova2
[23:26] <Laurenceb> but the wind was very strong
[23:26] <jcoxon_> yeah
[23:26] <jcoxon_> twas a shame
[23:26] <Laurenceb> any news on nova2 or is it totally lost?
[23:27] <jcoxon_> oh well - its the curse of the second launch (though MiHAB 2 of course survived)
[23:27] <jcoxon_> saw carl yesterday and he didn't mention anything
[23:27] <jcoxon_> no new i guess is bad news
[23:27] <jcoxon_> it was far out to sea at last contact
[23:27] <jcoxon_> i don't think it would have made holland
[23:28] <Laurenceb> I've only got one more week of term, then I'm starting work on the glider
[23:28] <Laurenceb> I'm going to buy one of the units off display3000.com
[23:29] <Laurenceb> but if you've got an airframe I could build a flight controller
[23:30] <Laurenceb> I'm thinking of having something off display3000 as main computer with a seperate micro as autopilot
[23:30] <jcoxon_> well we still in v. v. early planning stage
[23:31] <Laurenceb> thhis could instead be interfaced with a gumsticz
[23:31] <jcoxon_> hmmm v. interesting
[23:31] <jcoxon_> i'm of course pushing for a gumstix
[23:31] <Laurenceb> I'll be using serial with rts cts
[23:31] <jcoxon_> oh right
[23:31] <jcoxon_> that shouldn't be to difficult to set up on one of the serial ports on the gumstix :-D
[23:32] <Laurenceb> and commands like status-says what wind vector is ect
[23:32] <Laurenceb> and target- sets new target
[23:33] <Laurenceb> the micro will have a gps input and run a loop to continuously adjust the rudder
[23:34] <jcoxon_> so the micro could be interfaced to the gumstix
[23:34] <jcoxon_> ?
[23:34] <Laurenceb> I still havent got servos to run very well of my micro yet, it's a bit tricky, it seems the time between pulses has to be right
[23:35] <Laurenceb> yes should be easy!
[23:35] <jcoxon_> cool
[23:35] <jcoxon_> so if we were to be working at a different pace
[23:35] <jcoxon_> at a later date we could perhaps intergrate your micros

[23:36] <jcoxon_> cause i'm away for the next 2 weeks and so you would have already begun
[23:36] <Laurenceb> I'm cold and stuff, so I'll be off , hopefully I can find a better method of internet acess LOL
[23:36] <jcoxon_> hehe
