[18:16] <jcoxon> hey all
[18:17] <rocketboy> hiya
[18:18] <jcoxon> what were the reasons for the scrubb?
[18:20] <rocketboy> quite a few problems with things not working - sensors, camaras (problems with SD cards) and the radio
[18:20] <rocketboy> a bit of too last minute integration me thinks
[18:21] <jcoxon> hmmm
[18:21] <jcoxon> oh well
[18:21] <rocketboy> still the jetstream was far from ideal - so perhaps it was for the best
[18:21] <jcoxon> just about to say that
[18:21] <jcoxon> this way they can launch another day
[18:21] <rocketboy> yeah - it would have been a very short flight
[18:22] <jcoxon> what are the plans now?
[18:22] <jcoxon> another attempt?
[18:23] <rocketboy> henry said that if they had flown and the cutdown didn't work it would have ended up in somthing blue rather than greeen
[18:23] <jcoxon> indeed it would have
[18:23] <rocketboy> next week I think (perhaps during the week - but more likly at the weekend)
[18:24] <jcoxon> right - will be able to make this one
[18:24] <rocketboy> still it was an oppertunity to have a chat with sal & henry
[18:25] <jcoxon> cool
[18:25] <jcoxon> lots of people there?
[18:25] <rocketboy> sal seems dead keen on the tube launched rocket
[18:26] <jcoxon> :-)
[18:26] <jcoxon> excellent
[18:26] <rocketboy> about 7 or 8 - henry, sal, david (a student with a rocket project), carl (breifly), ed, and to others I didn't know
[18:27] <jcoxon> oh right
[18:28] <rocketboy> still the jetstream doesn't seem much better for the next week
[18:28] <jcoxon> oh dear
[18:28] <rocketboy> I had a look at this years jetstream - January and february seem like quiet months
[18:29] <jcoxon> thats interesting
[18:29] <rocketboy> I'm wondering if there are any yearly trends - to work out the good and bad months
[18:29] <jcoxon> i could imagine there are
[18:29] <rocketboy> me too
[18:30] <rocketboy> I'm trying to find an automated way of downloading the data to analyse it
[18:31] <rocketboy> it would be good to get a picture of when is good to fly and when its better to concentrate on building stuff
[18:31] <jcoxon> yeah
[18:31] <jcoxon> well certainly high pressure helps
[18:32] <jcoxon> as it seems to deflect the jetstream away
[18:32] <jcoxon> about this time of the year we have waves of low pressure fronts hitting us
[18:32] <jcoxon> i could imagine jan and feb have a few nice slow moving high pressures - resulting in those really cold clear days
[18:33] <rocketboy> - its all quite interesting - I have been quite impressed with the jet-stream forecasts
[18:33] <rocketboy> when did you launch peg -1
[18:34] <jcoxon> mid october
[18:34] <jcoxon> very odd weather that day
[18:34] <rocketboy> oh - right - I thought it was winter
[18:34] <jcoxon> considering the direction it went in
[18:34] <jcoxon> peg II was feb
[18:34] <jcoxon> peg III was july
[18:34] <rocketboy> yes - I don't think I have seen a jetstream going NW
[18:35] <jcoxon> in theory it shouldn't
[18:36] <jcoxon> correolous effect and all
[18:36] <jcoxon> i think we were in a zone of very little wind
[18:36] <jcoxon> with ground winds moving NW
[18:36] <rocketboy> ah - OK most of it due to ground winds
[18:37] <jcoxon> (well the jetstream probably can - but it has a east west direction mainly)
[18:38] Action: jcoxon needs ibuprofen as hes injured his back playing hockey
[18:39] <rocketboy> - self inflited wound IMO - if you will play dangerious sports ;-)
[18:39] <jcoxon> hehe
[18:39] <jcoxon> i'm thinking of making Peg IV a "heavy lifter"
[18:39] <jcoxon> its my new idea for a payload desing
[18:40] <jcoxon> design*
[18:40] <rocketboy> - whats it gonna lift
[18:40] <rocketboy> ?
[18:40] <jcoxon> where its like a hot air balloon basket (not weaved of course)
[18:40] <jcoxon> with the flight computer embedded in the bottom
[18:40] <jcoxon> so it has a place for other payloads
[18:41] <jcoxon> say if you wanted to put a payload for just temperature sensing
[18:41] <rocketboy> thats not a bad idea - makes it kind of modular
[18:41] <jcoxon> it sort of modular
[18:42] <jcoxon> can fly on its own
[18:42] <jcoxon> sort of like a shuttle
[18:43] <rocketboy> I was watching the bond film on TV the other night - part of the film they had "switchblades" - which they used to glide back to ground from a high altitude - I looked it up today and it seems they are real - called PHASST
[18:43] <jcoxon> very cool
[18:43] <rocketboy> http://www.kineticaerospace.com/
[18:44] <rocketboy> the wings seem to un-curl
[18:45] <rocketboy> mind you - they woudn't get me up in one of those
[18:45] <jcoxon> haha
[18:47] <rocketboy> the 'V' tail-plane seems to be used a lot on fast gliders (like lifting bodies)
[18:49] <rocketboy> I think it gives roll and pitch stability
[18:51] Action: jcoxon has found some ibuprofen
[18:53] <jcoxon> right i better be off - got to go to formal hall
[18:53] <jcoxon> cya
