[18:25] <jcoxon> hey all
[18:25] <jcoxon> phatmonkey, can you update ukhas to say that Nova 1 reached 32km
[18:38] <kc0wys> hey
[19:30] <phatmonkey> nice!!
[19:30] <phatmonkey> jcoxon, link?
[20:25] <jcoxon> hey phatmonkey

[23:27] <phatmonkey> jcoxon, details! details!
[23:27] <phatmonkey> i'll get it up on the site
[23:35] <jcoxon> it wasn't my payload!
[23:35] <jcoxon> but i can give most details
[23:35] <jcoxon> launched from cambridge
[23:35] <jcoxon> 800g balloon
[23:36] <jcoxon> 2 radios + phone + camera with 1gb card (took every 15 secs)
[23:36] <icez> 32km seems a lot
[23:36] <jcoxon> reached 32km
[23:36] <jcoxon> landed just north of Bury St Edmunds
[23:37] <jcoxon> it was a light payload
[23:37] <jcoxon> though the accuracy of the gps could be questioned considering they aren't expected to work above 18km
[23:39] <jcoxon> i guess it could be worked out from the ascension rate assuming it was constant
[23:42] <phatmonkey> great stuff
[23:43] <jcoxon> it was an excellent launch
[23:43] <phatmonkey> these GPSs obviously do work over these altitudes - it's just US government restrictions
[23:43] <jcoxon> had packet radio contact for quite a long period of time
[23:43] <phatmonkey> I think it's 60,000 feet *and* 1000 knots, not or
[23:43] <phatmonkey> brilliant
[23:43] <jcoxon> however lost radio contact on landing
[23:43] <jcoxon> so text message revealed final pos
[23:44] <phatmonkey> i won't have masses of time now because of school
[23:44] <phatmonkey> mainly because i'm doing 6 or 7 AS levels
[23:44] <phatmonkey> sigh, i'm insane
[23:44] <jcoxon> hehe
[23:45] <jcoxon> 6 or 7?
[23:45] <phatmonkey> might drop a couple if it's all getting a bit too much
[23:45] <jcoxon> i did 5 and found it hard enough
[23:45] <phatmonkey> yeah
[23:45] <jcoxon> which ones are you doing?
[23:45] <icez> AS levels?
[23:46] <phatmonkey> physics, chemistry, maths, further maths, computing, music tech and we have the option of doing general studies
[23:46] <jcoxon> icez, you take them in hte uk at around 16/17 years old
[23:46] <phatmonkey> we're forced to have general studies lessons, and we can do the exam if we want
[23:46] <jcoxon> second last year of exams
[23:46] <phatmonkey> i've already done the computing, but i mucked up the coursework, so i'm redoing that module
[23:46] <jcoxon> phatmonkey, general studies really doesn't count
[23:46] <phatmonkey> yeah, i know
[23:47] <jcoxon> cambridge ignore it
[23:47] <phatmonkey> nearly all the unis ignore it!
[23:47] <icez> oh i see
[23:47] <jcoxon> they are quite important as the unis see the results and it goes towards whether you get a place
[23:47] <phatmonkey> it's such a pain in the arse having to do the lessons
[23:47] <jcoxon> i did:
[23:48] <jcoxon> bio chem physics geog and theatre studies
[23:48] <jcoxon> we were meant to do critical thinking but i never went
[23:48] <phatmonkey> hehe
[23:48] <phatmonkey> that's pretty much what general studies consists of
[23:48] <phatmonkey> waste of time imho
[23:49] <jcoxon> well if it gets to much don't hesitate to give some up
[23:49] <phatmonkey> yeah
[23:49] <jcoxon> right peg IV now has a phone
[23:49] <phatmonkey> stuff outside school is just as important for unis
[23:50] <icez> yup
[23:50] <icez> i knew someone who was refused from Yale AND Harvard, even though he was #1 student and all, just because he didn't do anything else..
[23:50] <icez> :P
[23:51] <phatmonkey> everyone gets straight As... it's the only thing they can look at!
[23:52] <icez> everyone?:P
[23:52] <phatmonkey> at least everyone applying for cambridge ;)
[23:52] <jcoxon> perhaps not everyone
[23:53] <icez> not me:P
[23:54] <icez> that might be why i'm not in one of the fancier universities;P
[23:59] <jcoxon> icez, i'm sure if you had taken ASs you would of got straight As
[23:59] <jcoxon> how is your course going?
