[19:56] <Tiger^> hi jcoxon
[19:59] <jcoxon> hey Tiger^
[20:01] <Tiger^> my chute arrived yesterday :)
[20:01] <Tiger^> and i've got my permit :)
[20:01] <jcoxon> excellent
[20:02] <jcoxon> so nearly ready to go
[20:02] <Tiger^> yeah
[20:02] <Tiger^> two weeks to the launch now
[20:02] <Tiger^> i've got a problem though :/
[20:04] <jcoxon> what?
[20:06] <Tiger^> well
[20:06] <Tiger^> the chute doesn't have a spill hole
[20:06] <Tiger^> it has a loop at its apex
[20:07] <Tiger^> so much for my cutdown system
[20:07] <Tiger^> i planned to install it near the payload :/
[20:07] <Tiger^> and i had everything ready for that
[20:09] <jcoxon> so whats the plan now?
[20:10] <Tiger^> no idea
[20:11] <jcoxon> could you not make a spill hole
[20:11] <jcoxon> thats what i did
[20:11] <Tiger^> hmm i don't want to mess with the chute
[20:12] <Tiger^> i'll go with the payload connected to parachute connected to balloon way :)
[20:12] <jcoxon> and the cutdown device?
[20:12] <Tiger^> guys from KNSP and other US projects have the cutdown device on top of the parachute
[20:12] <jcoxon> I just made a cross with duct tape and then made a hole where the tape crossed
[20:13] <jcoxon> yeah thats teh standard way
[20:13] <jcoxon> i'm going to do mine different though
[20:13] <Tiger^> but that's weird
[20:13] <Tiger^> the cutdown device has its weight
[20:13] <Tiger^> and what when it falls on the chute?
[20:13] <jcoxon> and you lose it
[20:13] <Tiger^> nope
[20:13] <jcoxon> nah they cut below it
[20:13] <Tiger^> they don't!
[20:14] <Tiger^> they have two connections from the chute to the cutdown device
[20:14] <Tiger^> one with the load line, which gets cut
[20:14] <Tiger^> and one with a second line looped around the cutdown and a split ring
[20:14] <jcoxon> right
[20:14] <Tiger^> so after cutting down the device stays on the chute
[20:14] <Tiger^> but that's *so* weird
[20:14] <jcoxon> oh
[20:15] <jcoxon> i'm going to have it below the chute
[20:15] <Tiger^> i'm picturing the cutdown falling on the chute and the chute falling on the payload
[20:15] <Tiger^> ;)
[20:15] <jcoxon> yeah
[20:15] <jcoxon> i could see that
[20:15] <jcoxon> but something must work...
[20:15] <Tiger^> not very nice
[20:16] <jcoxon> my cutdown will be holding the paracute up
[20:16] <jcoxon> and so when the tension is lost it will fall away towards the payload allowing the parachute to open
[20:16] <Tiger^> right
[20:18] <jcoxon> Tiger^, i'll be back in about 10 mins
[20:18] <Tiger^> ok :)

[20:36] <jcoxon> back
[20:38] <Tiger^> yeah
[20:38] <Tiger^> so you know
[20:38] <Tiger^> i'm still reluctant
[20:38] <Tiger^> but i think i'll go with the cutdown above the chute
[20:39] <jcoxon> okay
[20:39] <jcoxon> would be great if you could document it
[20:39] <jcoxon> i'd be interested to see your methods
[20:40] <Tiger^> sure
[20:40] <Tiger^> i'm taking pictures as i assemble things :)
[20:40] <jcoxon> excellent
[20:40] <jcoxon> i've got a week and a half till my exams
[20:41] <jcoxon> then another week and a half of exams
[20:41] <jcoxon> then i'll build the cutdown device
[20:41] <Tiger^> and after that, it's gonna be all balloon business? ;>
[20:41] <jcoxon> balloons for 12 weeks
[20:41] <Tiger^> :)
[20:41] <jcoxon> yesterday i applied for 5 launch permits
[20:41] <jcoxon> and also am in the process of getting a 10 week licence
[20:44] <Tiger^> nice
