[18:14] <AstronomiaOnline> hello
[18:17] <jcoxon> hey
[18:17] <AstronomiaOnline> how are you jcoxon?
[18:18] <jcoxon> good thanks
[18:18] <jcoxon> you?
[18:18] <AstronomiaOnline> pretty good, thanks!
[18:18] <jcoxon> cool
[18:19] <AstronomiaOnline> last week I saw an article about high altitude balloons, and got interested in the subject
[18:19] <jcoxon> :D
[18:19] <AstronomiaOnline> I'm from Argentina, in South America :)
[18:20] <jcoxon> ooo cool
[18:21] <jcoxon> thinking of trying it?
[18:21] <AstronomiaOnline> yes, absolutely!
[18:21] <jcoxon> :D
[18:22] <AstronomiaOnline> some guys over at #space mentioned you were involved on this :)
[18:24] <jcoxon> yeah,i was mentioned it on #space - looking for some ideas
[18:24] <AstronomiaOnline> great...
[18:24] <jcoxon> am attempting to connect up a russian geiger counter to my payload
[18:25] <jcoxon> proving to be difficult
[18:25] <AstronomiaOnline> wow, sounds really interesting!
[18:25] <AstronomiaOnline> taking into account the dollar-peso exchange rate, my budget is really tight
[18:25] <AstronomiaOnline> but I would love to give it a try
[18:26] <jcoxon> oh i'm a big fan of using readily avaliable equipment
[18:26] <jcoxon> and ebay of course
[18:27] <AstronomiaOnline> great...
[18:27] <AstronomiaOnline> so, where should I begin?
[18:27] <jcoxon> well what do you want to achieve?
[18:28] <jcoxon> altitude? pictures? scientific data? have a glider that returns to you
[18:28] <jcoxon> i personally attempt to get as high as possible
[18:28] <jcoxon> and take pictures
[18:29] <AstronomiaOnline> well... pictures and scientific data would be fascinating
[18:30] <jcoxon> cool
[18:30] <jcoxon> basically you need to work out a method of tracking and retrieving the payload
[18:30] <jcoxon> my set up is:
[18:30] <jcoxon> gps->gumstix->nokia mobile phone-> me
[18:31] <jcoxon> instead of a gumstix you could use a much cheaper PIC - but that would require programming
[18:31] <AstronomiaOnline> sorry... but what is a gumstix?
[18:31] <jcoxon> its a mini computer that runs linux
[18:31] <jcoxon> the size of a stick of gum
[18:32] <AstronomiaOnline> ohh interesting... but... is it sold? or did you build it?
[18:32] <jcoxon> its sold
[18:32] <jcoxon> www.gumstix.com
[18:32] <jcoxon> from california
[18:32] <AstronomiaOnline> oh, interesting...
[18:33] <jcoxon> lots of addon boards that give things like serial ports, ethernet, cf slots
[18:33] <jcoxon> i run it off 3 AAA Li batteries
[18:34] <AstronomiaOnline> oh, fascinating... from $39?
[18:34] <jcoxon> the gumstix itself is $99 i think
[18:34] <AstronomiaOnline> oh I see
[18:34] <AstronomiaOnline> and the addons?
[18:35] <jcoxon> $25 and above it think
[18:35] <AstronomiaOnline> I see
[18:35] <jcoxon> of course there are other options, phatmonkey is using a hacked wireless router/storage SLUG
[18:41] <AstronomiaOnline> great...
[18:41] <AstronomiaOnline> now... about the balloon...
[18:43] <jcoxon> i got my first one from ebay
[18:44] <jcoxon> but my new one is from the British Antarctic Survery
[18:44] <jcoxon> you can order them from the manufactures in the USA
[18:44] <AstronomiaOnline> great... at what cost?
[18:45] <jcoxon> umm varies
[18:45] <jcoxon> from ebay £15
[18:46] <jcoxon> directly about £50
[18:46] <AstronomiaOnline> I see...
[18:58] <jcoxon> right i have to go
[18:58] <jcoxon> good to talk to you
[18:59] <jcoxon> cya
