[11:55] <phatmonkey> I picked a zagi because, well, they won't break
[11:57] <phatmonkey> I've bought some stuff from http://www.phoenixmp.com/ before
[11:57] <phatmonkey> maybe a customised version of http://www.phoenixmp.com/models/eppisoar.htm ?
[11:57] <phatmonkey> hmm...
[12:00] <phatmonkey> I've been chatting to art from the high altitude glider project about this
[12:00] <phatmonkey> he originally used a simple rudder/elevator model, but apparently it wouldn't pull out properly into level flight from launch
[12:01] <phatmonkey> the autopilot didn't have enough control

[20:17] <synco> If you use Eppisoar you may be waiting a long time for it to come down... (or at least here in NZ where the sun shines and thermals / wave is BIG)
[20:27] <synco> Diahedral in the wings is good and will help stabalise the plane (since COG becomes lower than centre of lift).

[21:56] <jcoxon> hey willo
[21:58] <willo> hi :)
[21:59] <jcoxon> welcome to #highaltitude
[21:59] #highaltitude: mode change '+o jcoxon' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.
[22:00] <willo> thanks ;) i'm just checking it out, because i've been planning a similar project ;)
[22:00] <jcoxon> cool
[22:00] <jcoxon> its a quiet channel - but were are slowly getting more users :-)
[22:00] <jcoxon> well okay 3 of us and a bot
[22:01] <willo> hehe..
[22:01] <jcoxon> whats your project like?
[22:15] <willo> hehe. everything from balloons to helictopters ;)
[22:16] <jcoxon> oh wow
[22:16] <willo> model helicopters, ofcourse.
[22:16] <willo> ;)
[22:16] <jcoxon> i'm a balloon/parachute person
[22:16] <willo> parachute? :o
[22:17] <jcoxon> as in my payload returns to earth via parachute
[22:17] <jcoxon> :D
[22:17] <jcoxon> phatmonkey is building a balloon/glider system
[22:17] <willo> heheh
[22:17] <willo> cool.
[22:18] <jcoxon> and synco has started a company specialising in autonomous gliders launched from balloons
[22:18] <willo> couple of years since i got the idea, after reading the linux reaches new hights-project on slashdot
[22:18] <jcoxon> yes i read that as well
[22:18] <jcoxon> got me started :-D
[22:18] <willo> :)
[22:19] <jcoxon> have you launched a balloon?
[22:20] <willo> nope
[22:20] <jcoxon> planning to?
[22:20] <jcoxon> :-)
[22:21] <willo> yes. i just want to look around for ideas from other similar projects before i start building it ;)
[22:21] <jcoxon> cool
[22:22] <jcoxon> if you have any questions, i'm sure someone will be able to help!
[22:22] <willo> :)
[22:23] <jcoxon> one question for you - where did you find out about the channel?
[22:23] <willo> some friends of mine are building a model helicopter with camera and gps.. live transmission of picture with gps data on the videofeed
[22:23] <willo> hm.. http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~jac208/pegasus/index.html
[22:23] <willo> ;D
[22:23] <jcoxon> oh cool - me then
[22:23] <jcoxon> wow that sounds cool
[22:23] <willo> they use a PIC-processor, etc ;)
[22:23] <jcoxon> (i'm just trying to advertise the channel)
[22:24] <willo> hehe
[22:49] <phatmonkey> site will be up... soon
[22:49] <phatmonkey> actually, I'll get it up this evening
[22:49] <phatmonkey> it has a bunch of information on it
[22:49] <phatmonkey> I'm sure whether to move to a more stable glider platform to be honest
[22:50] <phatmonkey> the zagi seemed great, although being terribly unstable, it'll survive absolutely anything thrown at it
[22:50] <phatmonkey> and it'll protect all the equipment
[22:50] <phatmonkey> since it'll all be within the foam wing
[22:50] <phatmonkey> no other plane would be able to do that so neatly
[22:56] <jcoxon> okay
[22:56] <jcoxon> i reckon protection is the most important part - if it the equipment survives then it can be used again
[22:58] <phatmonkey> yah
[22:58] <phatmonkey> it's not the end of the world if the autopilot gets confused and we have to chase after a glider on a parachute
[22:59] <phatmonkey> we can always /try/ IR horizon detectors and things like that
[23:00] <phatmonkey> I don't think testing those sorts of things on uncontrolled payloads will be any use, since the balloon and the parachute will get in the way of the sky
[23:00] <phatmonkey> for the Z axis sensor
[23:04] <jcoxon> there is that
[23:05] <jcoxon> so are you still going to do atlas?
[23:19] <synco> Good to hear the sites is going to be up soon.
[23:26] <jcoxon> right i'm off
[23:26] <jcoxon> speak to all you guys soon
