[21:07] Go ahead [21:08] New position from 034FSKTEST after 034 days silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=4FSKTEST [21:09] How on earth do I get the data down from the baloon, most the data on the UKHAS site is quite old. I've got my head around the recieving, but what do I need on the baloon. [21:10] My main aim is getting pos data, all the other sensor data can wait until recovery [21:11] Which country will you launch from ? [21:11] UK [21:11] Cool. OK so here we can only use low poer license-free radio transmitters in the "ISM" bands [21:12] which pretty much means around 434MHz, 10mW max [21:12] You have a choice of modulation i.e. how the data is encoded in the radio signal [21:12] Which mostly boils down to RTTY or LoRa [21:13] any perticuluar advantages, or just as you please [21:13] Are you going to build and/pr program the tracker yourself? [21:13] I'm happy to, but if a pre-packaged solution is a better option I'm open to it [21:14] Depends what you mean by "better" :) [21:14] It's cheaper and more educational to DIY [21:14] go with the DIY :) [21:14] And I say that as someone who sells (indirectly) balloon trackers [21:15] You learn more plus you get the satisfaction of having your code running in the stratosphere [21:15] very true [21:16] SoRTTY - with this you write some code to waggle a pin that controls the frequency of the radio transmiiter [21:16] Essentially you set the pin high or low to send a 1 or 0 over the radio [21:16] right, makes sence [21:17] This has to be for a fairly tightly controlled time of the order of milliseconds so you'd use a timer interrupt for that [21:17] Also you need to send start and stop bits around the data bits [21:18] That way the receiver knows where each byte starts [21:18] Essentially this is like an olde RS232 serial port, but over the radio [21:18] what level of microcontroller would you need for that, simple arduino or something a bit bigger like an RPI [21:19] Either, but on the Pi you'd use a real serial port as the timing is tricky [21:19] If you just want to send telemetry, then almost any microcontroller will do it. [21:19] Arduino, ESP32, whatever [21:20] great, i'll stick to an esp [21:20] A Pi makes it easy to send image data too, but then you've got a larger device, larger batteries, operating system, more complexity [21:20] Image data I'm fine getting after the landing [21:20] Plus waiting for the thing to boot after power up [21:21] Great [21:21] Have a look at https://ukhas.org.uk/guides:linkingarduinotontx2 [21:21] The NTX2 is old but there are later models that do the same thing but better [21:21] Thanks [21:21] And if you get stuck I have some NTX2s spare [21:22] Guest27 (~Guest27@90.255.32.48) joined #highaltitude. [21:23] On the receiver side, unless you happen to be a radio ham with UHF kit, then an SDR (software defined radio) connects to a PC over USB, so you can receive with that using suitable PC software [21:23] Or a Mac [21:23] Yeah, I've grasped (just about) the concept of SDR [21:23] (I'm the same person as before just on my phone) [21:24] Just be aware that the cheap RTL SDRs are a bit on the deaf side so you might want to invest in a better one, or a pre-amp [21:24] Got it [21:24] For general HAB advice have a read of http://www.daveakerman.com/?p=1732 [21:25] For receiving/decoding RTTY see https://ukhas.org.uk/guides:sdr_tracker [21:25] On the tracker you'll need the ESP, a UBlox GPS, and the NTXB /NTX2B / MTX2 [21:26] Great! Thank you very much for all your hel0 [21:26] Plus battery power supply - use primary lithium cells (Energizxer Lithiums) as they work when cold [21:26] np [21:28] Guest27 (~Guest27@90.255.32.48) left irc: Quit: Client closed [22:40] New position from 03NOB9 after 0315 hours silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=NOB9 [22:42] sumie-dh (~sumie-dh@78.108.102.220) left irc: Ping timeout: 268 seconds [23:03] chris_99 (uid26561@id-26561.lymington.irccloud.com) left irc: Quit: Connection closed for inactivity [23:21] Kodar (~Kodar@93-142-29-209.adsl.net.t-com.hr) left irc: Read error: Connection reset by peer [23:40] LazyLeopard (~irc-clien@chocky.lazyleopard.org.uk) left irc: Quit: Textual IRC Client: www.textualapp.com [23:54] New position from 03DG4NOB-7 after 033 days silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=DG4NOB-7 [00:00] --- Thu Mar 24 2022
