[12:46] New vehicle on the map: 03UCSBOL - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=UCSBOL [12:47] Hi, i'm just wondering , i was reading a plane expends more fuel at higher altitudes, i don't really understand why that is, does a plane have to fly faster at higher altitudes to maintain the same height? [12:50] oh that doesn't seem correct re. expending more fuel. jet engines are apparently more efficient at higher altitudes [12:58] UCS launch stream is live https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vM4x2I4Hhc [13:03] 28c. toasty [13:16] very [13:30] New position from 03N4KGL-11 after 0313 hours silence - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=N4KGL-11 [13:32] gbaman (~gbaman@109.255.214.94) joined #highaltitude. [13:49] New vehicle on the map: 03SV3IRG-4FSK - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=SV3IRG-4FSK [13:49] jet engines are most efficient at cruise altitude. however, the optimal cruise altitude varies depending on weight [13:50] on longer routes, pilots often perform a "step climb" procedure so that they gradually request higher flight levels as they burn fuel and lose weight [13:52] ah, that's interesting re. step climb. for a 'turboprop' it sounds like they maybe become less efficient i think? [13:52] yes, a propeller does not perform that well in thin air [13:53] also turboprop aircraft generally cover much shorter distances routes anyway [13:53] i was reading this - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_economy_in_aircraft#Altitude that made it sound like the engine itself becomes less efficient due to the lower temp? [13:54] on some turboprop routes it doesn't even make sense to climb very high since you'd have to start descent almost immediately [13:55] and I imagine you also have to factor in how much more fuel it takes to climb [13:59] New vehicle on the map: 03KI5JSU-9 - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=KI5JSU-9 [14:02] well, the engine thrust decreases with altitude but so does the aircraft drag. I suppose the lowered drag still counts for more, until some point where the thin air becomes too much for the engine [14:04] at some altitude the engines simply can't produce enough thrust to maintain level flight. or, alternatively, if you try to push the engines too hard they flame out [14:04] I am probably oversimplifying things way too much since I'm really not an expert. [14:05] that's a good point re. drag / thrust. what's flame out mean? it just can't perform combustion? [14:06] the air is so thin it can't compress air enough to maintain combustion [14:06] New vehicle on the map: 03KI5JSU-10 - 12https://tracker.habhub.org/#!qm=All&q=KI5JSU-10 [14:08] aha gotcha [14:09] there's basically not enough oxygen available [14:47] f5apq (~f5apq@2a01cb0c0618d5007139854dd2800d91.ipv6.abo.wanadoo.fr) joined #highaltitude.
